It’s not often developments in chainsaw chain technology cause a stir; but STIHL RAPID Hexa is fully deserving of the attention it’s gained around the world. Consisting of a patented ‘V’ shaped cutting tooth and hexagonal file, STIHL Hexa offers professional chainsaw users a 10% cutting performance boost and a much enhanced sharpening experience unlike anything else on the market. In this video, we’ll look at how has this been achieved. Firstly, the top plate kerf of each cutting tooth is narrower than the equivalent RS chain, leading to a 10% improvement in cutting speed and efficiency. Hexa also features a 25° sharpening angle as opposed to the 30° sharpening angle used with other STIHL chainsaw chains. Testing has found that a slightly shallower angle performs better in diagonal felling cuts, which is ideal for arborists and tree surgeons alike. The most striking update to the chain however is the 60°, V shaped side plate angle of the cutting teeth. Each tooth is designed to work harmoniously with the STIHL Hexa file – as you can in the video, the Hexa chain file sits seamlessly in the tooth’s profile. Compared to a round file, the Hexa filing system makes it much easier to maintain the perfect sharpening angle, resulting in a faster sharpening process and a high-quality finish. With RAPID Hexa it’s quick and easy to achieve a razor sharp cutting edge, and due to the less acute angle of the leading cutting corner, the tooth is less prone to wear and stays sharper for longer too. Like every STIHL chainsaw chain, RAPID Hexa is produced in our dedicated chain production facility in Switzerland where the chains are pre-stretched, meaning fewer adjustments are needed in the first period of use. STIHL RAPID Hexa chains should always be used with a STIHL Hexa file, with no exceptions. A top ridge makes it clear which orientation the file needs to be held, and because the Hexa filing system is so simple to use, a file guide isn’t necessary. Our wooden or FH3 file handles are perfect for use with a Hexa file. RAPID Hexa is a full chisel chainsaw chain with no humped drive links, and is available in 1.6mm drive link gauge and 3/8” pitch. This means STIHL Hexa is compatible with our more powerful professional forestry chainsaws, ranging from a STIHL MS 362 C-M up to MS 661 C-M, and everything in-between. RAPID Hexa can be bought in a number of loops between 16 and 36” - longer loops will need to be provided by a STIHL approved dealer that stocks a reel of RAPID Hexa chain. There are a few options for getting up and running with a STIHL RAPID Hexa chain. Chain loops and files can be bought individually, alternatively the Hexa Upgrade Kits contain 2 chain loops, a file and a file holder. Make sure you have a flat file and depth gauge tool handy, as these are not included in the kit. Alternatively, a Hexa Sharpening Kit is also available, containing everything required including the Hexa file, file holder, flat file and depth gauge tool.
