Two groundsmen working for Burleys Ground Maintenance rescued an elderly lady as flames engulfed the window of her home recently. The Windsor Observer reports that Mick Brend and Sam Rowe were working in Clewer Memorial Recreation Ground when they saw smoke pouring from a nearby house. The two men rushed over and Sam helped the lady from her home whilst Mick put out the fire in the garden. Mick told the local paper, "Another five minutes and I reckon it would have gone up. It could have been serious – it melted the window frame." A spokesperson for the fire service praised their actions saying, "The workmen in the memorial park prevented it from becoming much more serious."

And a groundsman based in Southampton, celebrated his namesake's day last Thursday by dressing in full knight's regalia when astride his mower! The Southern Daily Echo reports that George Hallett had spent the days leading up to April 23rd in an armour costume, with a large St George's flag and shield attached to his ride-on as he was mowing parkland. “I think everyone should be proud of their country,” George, told the paper. “We should celebrate it a bit more than we do at the moment.”
