TURF LIFE
. . a view from the dug-out
The row over the use of artificial turf at the forthcoming Women's World Cup has intensified. Following our reporting of the USA star Alex Morgan and Hollywood legend Tom Hanks condemning FIFA, a Canadian human rights court has now ordered football's international governing body to respond by Thursday this week (Oct 9th) to a gender discrimination claim. "We know that men would never have the World Cup or any major tournament played on [artificial turf]," Alex Morgan told ABC News. "And we don't think it should be for the women's game either." A teenager has landed his dream job as part of the grounds crew at rugby union team The Scarlets based in Llanelli thanks to a scheme run by Swansea Council, reports the Llanelli Star. Nineteen-year-old Jack Davies got his break largely thanks to the lifelong learning and employment training team (Llets) which took him under its wing at the age of 16 and helped convert his enthusiasm into a worthwhile career with training and funding. "I have no doubt that I wouldn't be employed at Parc y Scarlets if I hadn't completed my training with Llets," he is quoted as saying.
This weekend saw Eddie Mills, course manager at Edgbaston Golf Club and now part-time match-day ground staff at Villa Park, reach his 25th anniversary of not missing an Aston Villa home game, reported the Birmingham Mail. The last time Villa played at home without Eddie there was a 1-0 victory over Derby County in the old Division One on September 30 1989. You can read about Eddie's highs and lows as a dedicated supporter here.
