TURF PROBLEMS FORCE YARMOUTH TO CANCEL 2015 RACES
Remedial work now taking place
The remaining at fixtures at Yarmouth Racecourse for this year have been cancelled to allow work to take place on their troubled turf.
The final two meetings scheduled for 20th and 27th October will no longer take place to allow the course to be ready for its 2016 fixtures.
This follows the course only re-opening in August following a closure which lasted almost a year to allow the home straight to be re-laid. The third meeting of the season which took place on September 16th had to be abandoned and the following day's whole card cancelled, when two jockeys fell after their horses slipped on the wet turf.
A statement released by Glenn Tubby, Executive Director of Yarmouth on October 1st, read, "The track did not perform as we would have hoped in September given the challenging weather during the month."We are undertaking remedial work to address the areas of concern to enable us to be ready for racing for the start of Great Yarmouth's 2016 season. In order to do this we need to utilise the last of the autumn growing season to ensure that the track is sufficiently recovered before the winter. "All customers who have purchased a ticket for either fixture in October will receive a full refund. We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause and remain grateful for the support shown by horsemen, racegoers and sponsors during this project. "We are pleased that the home straight has received positive feedback from jockeys on the days we have raced this summer. Once we have completed the remedial work on the track over the winter we hope we will all be able to enjoy many successful seasons of racing at Great Yarmouth in the years to come."
