AIRPORTS CONCERN OVER WEEDS
Safety questions caused by the withdrawal of chlorpyrifos

The concern is without pest control more more birds could feed on the pests
At a recent well attended Updating event, organised by the Amenity Forum, concern was expressed about the possible  implications on air safety caused by the withdrawal of chlorpyrifos as an active ingredient in pesticide products.

The latter have been used to control pests on grass areas around runways and in particular leatherjackets and chafers.

The concern now is that without such control, it may encourage more birds feeding on the pests and in turn impact on aircraft safety.

The matter is being actively discussed and solutions being considered, including possibly seeking emergency authorisation whilst alternative approaches become available and accepted.

This was just one of the questions raised at the event held in Essex which attracted over 70 delegates. Presentations included a policy update, the need for sprayer testing, requirements for education and training and how to take an integrated approach to weed, pest and disease control.

These Updating Events are being held across the UK. They are free to attend and half day in length.
