AND FINALLY . . .
Greenkeeper scores an owl in one
A greenkeeper at Wells Golf Club got more than he bargained for when he recused a distressed tawny owl from a green, reports the Wells Journal.
The paper says club greenkeeper James called the club office after spotting a tawny owl in a poor state while carrying out his daily work. Club secretary Eira Powell told the Wells Journal, "James called the office to say there was an owl and that it was being hassled by magpies and was unable to fly away, it hovered more than flew and when it did, it was only for a few yards before collapsing again. "It was very easy to catch so James put it in a box and brought it to the secretary's office. We called Secret World [animal rescue] for advice on what was best to do to help it. Secret World said they would dispatch one of their volunteers to collect it." The animal rescue centre have since informed the club that birds of prey are currently finding it difficult to find food because of the weather conditions, hence this one finding itself in such a poor state.
The owl, which has been Christened James after the greenkeeper who found him, is apparently doing much better and is recovering, putting on weight. The plan is to move him to an outside pen at the centre soon so he can gain some flying strength and then when he's ready, return him to Wells Golf Club where he can be released.
