TURF LIFE
. . a view from the dug-out

From the dug out

Glamorgan CCC have posted a video interview with their Head Groundsman, Keith Exton, ahead of Wednesday's much anticipated opening Ashes Test. Six years on from the 5-day thriller which ended with Jimmy Anderson and Monty Panesar resolutely refusing to give up their wickets to gain a draw, Keith says that once the game starts matters are in the hands of Mother Nature. He says how the pitch will play will all be dependent on the weather conditions over the coming week.

The challenge of the 13th hole at Lenexa’s Canyon Farms Golf Course in Kansas, is usually the approach shot. However The Kansas City Star reported that golfers had an extra hazard to contend with this past week, when a 10ft sinkhole opened up on the fairway. Apparently the chasm appeared atop a weak point in the roof of a largely stable, 'non-operating' limestone mine. Groundstaff think excessive groundwater from a wet spring contributed to the collapse of the mine roof.

And finally, following greenkeepers and groundsmen on Twitter means @TurfProUK 's feed is always full of fascinating, informative and often funny stories and pics. Here's a recent couple of examples which have stood out. Firstly from American greens superintendent Brady Finton (@bradyfinton) this was simply captioned #superproblems

And from Ontario, Canada based head equipment manager at Angus Glen and Goodwood Golf Clubs, Kevin Hennigar,(@Canadianeh79), comes this one helpfully captioned 'Not the best place to hang out!'
