TURF LIFE
. . a view from the dug-out

From the dug out
A year-long study, recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in the U.S, found that primary school children who were exposed to more green spaces within or directly outside their school showed improved learning and memory. A fascinating read over at The Huffington Post describes how the findings reinforce that of a recent six-year study on 905 Massachusetts public elementary schools, which found that students in schools that had more "greenness" in their surroundings reported higher scores on standardised testing in English and maths.
Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder, tells the Huffington Post, "There is an expanding body of scientific evidence linking the human experience in the natural world to better physical and mental health and enhanced cognitive abilities."

BIGGA report that Leyland Golf Club's Course Manager Scott Reeves is the new face on their Board of Management, replacing Jeremy ‘Jez’ Hughes who has been appointed Regional Sales Manager at Symbio. Jez has left his position as representative for the Northern Region on the BIGGA Board of Management after four and a half years and will be covering the North West, Midlands and North Wales areas for Symbio.

Scott Reeves
The new Northern Region Board representative is Scott Reeves, Course Manager at Leyland Golf Club, a parkland course near Preston. He said: “I’ve got to know Jez really well in the last six months, he’s a terrific guy and he will be a tough act to follow. My aim is to represent the ordinary greenkeepers in the Region and it’s a real honour for me to do so. I will be visiting all of the Northern Sections whether it be educational days, golf events or other events."

And finally The Stroud News reports that new Forest Green Rovers groundsman Matt Rainey is returning to his old roots at The New Lawn. Having being the first groundsman at the New Lawn, Matt is returning after five-years as deputy groundsman at Cheltenham Town.

Matt Rainey in the Stroud News
Matt tells the local paper, "I am really looking forward to producing results at FGR that will make other groundsmen question their current way of doing things."
