YEAR-ROUND PERFORMANCE SUPPORTED
By a combination of mixtures

A combination of mixtures from the Johnsons Sports Seed range is helping maintain consistent, high-quality sports surfaces at the University of Bristol, despite intensive, year-round use.

Grounds manager Matt Carroll, who has worked at the university for more than 20 years and took on the lead role three years ago, oversees 38 acres of natural and artificial pitches used by both university teams and the local community. With limited windows for renovation between seasons, surface resilience and recovery are critical.

Matt says he and his team of four have relied on Johnsons mixtures for close to a decade. More recently, they have adopted a combination of J Premier Pitch for winter sports pitches and two cricket outfields, alongside J Premier Wicket for cricket squares.

According to Matt, overseeding plays a key role in maintaining surface quality, often within tight transition periods between sporting seasons. He reports strong establishment rates and rapid uptake from the mixtures, enabling reliable results within short timeframes. He also highlights consistent year-round colour and the ability of the surfaces to withstand frequent, back-to-back usage.

The quality of the university’s pitches was further demonstrated when the site was selected as a training venue for the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup, hosting the Canadian national team.
