People grow and maintain lawns for many different reasons. Lawns not only beautify their surroundings but also help prevent soil erosion and, during spells of hot weather, they cool the surrounding air amig the garden a more comfortable place to be. Lawns absorb sound and produce fresh oxygen for us to breath while also providing us with an outdoor playing facility or extension to our living space. A successful lawn will be one that grows evenly ad uniformly while exhibiting an even colour and texture throughout the year.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 September 2022I’m working to make my lawn an asset to my garden. This book provides good information that is easy to understand. Worth the money
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 June 2010When planning and setting up my new lawns, I bought this book, The Lawn Expert (Hessayon), and Lawns, Path and Patios (Titchmarsh). Of the three, I have used this one least so far. That's not because it is a poor book, but because it took a less hand-holding approach than the other two books in regard to setting up a lawn. I guess I'm not much of a gardener.
However, this book is really good when it comes to information about maintaining the lawn. It contains a very thorough month-by-month plan for everything that you need to do to keep the lawn healthy, happy, weed-free and green. Its aeration section beats the other two books, and it doesn't get itself bogged down in unnecessary detail. Where the The Lawn Expert feels the need to describe all kinds of mowers, this book just gets on with a couple of the ones you are most likely to use.
Though it is priced to match The Lawn Expert (Titchmarsh's book is cheaper), don't let its fewer pages deter you. It is a better organised book, that just gets on with it. So, for getting ready to lay a new lawn, it's not perhaps the strongest book, but for the long-term business of keeping a lawn in good condition all year round, this is the book.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 November 2012This is an reasonably good book on the subject of lawns. I have to say however that it is not as informative on the subject as another similarly priced book on the matter, which although is a bit dated has much more useful information.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 July 2019The book was set out well and explained clearly how to improve a lawn.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 July 2020Very dull. No romance or excitement. The author just harps on aboutt his lawn for the entire book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 July 2017Great teaching / student resource. Well laid out book. Has a good maintenance plan for the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Keen Greenkeeper
This is a great book about lawn maintenance, from which lawn to use, when to add soil, which season and when to water and for how long, also includes disease in grass including insects and how to go about fixing the problems. For me it is an A-Z guide, the all you need to know guide. A must have for any keen grass lover who wants their lawn to be healthy, lush and happy all year round.

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty good
Good basic book on lawn care. Could use more emphasis on care in particular regions. Overall, I enjoyed the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Informative yes, but not a fun read
The book gets across the information, but it wasn't the most exciting read. I was hoping for something with a more informal tone (e.g. tales of an obsessed lawn man). It is also lacking on pictures in many places where imagery would add a lot of value.
