GETTING IN THE SWING
National Golf Month targeting women and families
by TurfPro Editor, Steve Gibbs
The golf industry has had a tough few years so it's great to see an initiative like National Golf Month gearing up to generate interest and publicity for the sport again.
Taking place in May the campaign has the aim of getting 100,000 new and lapsed golfers engaged with the sport, as well as women and families. For the whole month, a host of golfing experiences will be available across the UK to get people enjoying the game. The organisers of NGM say the event will cater for all abilities, encouraging beginners, enticing returning players and elevating those looking to progress.
The initiative is supported by hundreds of golfing clubs and organisations and it's fabulous to see BIGGA's name amongst the high profile supporters which includes Sky, The European Tour and Nike Golf.
To raise the profile of the event further golfing legend Ian Poulter has been named as the official Ambassador for National Golf Month. He joins fellow golf stars Paul McGinley, Charlie Hull and Melissa Reed as well as TV presenters Naga Munchetty and Georgie Bingham in endorsing NGM.
In a statement Poulter said "I'm fully behind the great initiative that is National Golf Month. The more people we can get out playing, the better, and hopefully this will help people realise that it's a fun, healthy and sociable thing to do!"
Each ambassador is dedicated to raising the profile of golf as a fun activity for all the family although this year’s focus is on the admirable endeavour of getting more women, young people and lapsed golfers into the sport. Doug Poole, National Golf Month’s Project Director, said "It’s an honour that someone of Ian’s stature is joining our list of ambassadors. We want to engage as many people as possible with this initiative, Ian’s help will certainly raise awareness of golf and inspire everyone to give golf a go."
BIGGA's website is publicising the fact that the campaign is looking for club's across the country to get involved. Clubs are being asked to put together deals for all levels of ability; taster sessions for beginners, coaching for those looking to progress and experiences for all age groups. They say that a special focus on programmes for ladies and families would be a real positive, as these are their target market. Golf Clubs and Golf Pros that upload their offers to the website before 31st March go into a free prize draw to win a ‘PING Customer Experience’, which includes a set of 14 custom fitted PING Clubs and PING golf bag. The winner also attends a tour of the PING European Production Facility in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.
