GREENKEEPER DIES IN CLUB LAKE
Gareth Pugh of Peterstone Lakes, Newport

A greenkeeper at a Welsh golf club has died after he fell into a freezing lake while collecting golf balls.

Gareth Pugh, 29, was pulled from the lake by specialist rescue crews at Peterstone Lakes Golf Club, in Newport, South Wales on Thursday (Feb 11), after the alarm had been raised by players and staff.

He was taken to the University Hospital of Wales, in Cardiff, where he later died.

Gwent police confirmed, "The deceased man was working collecting golf balls."

A spokeswoman for the department said they are not looking for anyone in connection with the incident.

The poilce statement went on to say, "The family of the deceased are being supported by specialist trained officers at this time.

"A 29-year-old man, who can now be named as Gareth Pugh from Glynneath, was recovered from a lake in the grounds of the club by South Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews, using inflatable rescue boats and underwater cameras.

"He was taken to University Hospital of Wales where he sadly died."

Wales Online reports that the police and Newport council’s environmental health department are currently working to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.

A post mortem is scheduled to take place this week.

Many tributes have been paid to Gareth across social media. TurfPro extends our deepest sympathies to Gareth's freinds, family and colleagues.
