Story
April 1882 saw the birth of Minehead & West Somerset Golf Club and in our 140th Centenary, four members (Martyn, Tiny, Doug & Jim) decided to fund raise to mark this anniversary.
Enter the 140 hole challenge - we are led to believe this is the first time this has been done, so apologies if you have already done this! The challenge is to play 140 holes of golf at some of the oldest courses in England and all on courses older than our own and in just 4.5 days despite starting in Minehead to head to East Kent before returning home!
Our chosen charity is the British Heart Foundation - why? Well Martyn is a heart attack survivor, Tiny is undergoing heart treatment and we all know of many others who are affected with heart disease.
So at 7am on August 22nd we will leave Minehead to start this quest and you will be able to follow us each day on facebook - (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1666860387024831)
I will shortly reveal the itinerary, but first I want to publicly thank Royal Blackheath GC, London & Scottish GC, Royal Wimbledon GC, Oxford GC, Newbury & Crookham GC, Bramshaw GC, Royal North Devon and of course our own Minehead & West Somerset GC for the support to make this happen - THANK YOU !
The itinerary is as follows:
Monday 22nd August - 1330 Royal Blackheath Tuesday 23rd - 0800 London & Scottish & 1400 Royal Wimbledon Wednesday 24th - 0800 Oxford & 1430 Newbury & Crookham Thursday 25th - 0800 Bramshaw & 1636 Royal North Devon. Friday 26th 0930 Minehead & West Somerset
Please come and support us on the day and of course any donations will be very gratefully received by the British Heart Foundation who would like to add their own words -
"The BHF has helped halve the number of people dying from heart and circulatory disease in the UK but sadly every day hundreds of people lose their lives. It's only thanks to support from people like you that the BHF can create new treatments and discover new cures. £24 could pay for two hours of research by an early career scientist, but every pound helps so please give what you can to help us hit the target. Thanks!"
