CUB CADET TRIALED
By British Eventing course builders
Cub Cadet’s involvement in Eventing has taken another step forward with David Evans and Richard Taylor, two of the most successful course builders in Britain today.
Both have enjoyed taking part in competition but have found their calling building courses, not riding them. David’s ambition to go to the Olympics became achievable by teaming up with Richard in 1998. Sure enough, after years of hard work, they achieved their goal of building the course in Beijing for the 2008 Olympics.
Their work is well-recognised: as well as the demand for the pair’s services, David has been awarded The Bill Thompson Trophy for challenging the boundaries of the sport with his innovative work. David’s signature is the woodcarvings he makes for each jump, bringing character and humour to each course.

Last week saw the preparation for Bramham Horse Trials, where the competition started on the 5th of June 2014. David and Richard talked us through the process of getting the course ready for action. Besides ensuring the course is marked out with rope and carefully tended, they have crafted 45 individual jumps for the 5000m of the long course, which horses will cover in about 12 minutes. The jumps’ designs are influenced by long experience of building courses for many prestigious events on the British Eventing schedule - Blenheim and Chatsworth, for example – and working with renowned equestrians such as Ian Stark and Eric Winter who design the courses.
Cub Cadet has an enthusiasm for supporting equestrian sports, particularly Eventing. As well as a long-term sponsorship of World number one, William Fox-Pitt, the brand can regularly be seen as a sponsor at Eventing competitions.
To deepen the association with the sport, Cub Cadet is delighted to support David and Richard by making available a Cub Cadet RZTS46 Zero-Turn lawn tractor and Triloy self-propelled pedestrian mower CC53SPBEV. The machines are used in preparation of the course, ensuring that the grass around jumps is pristine. Richard said, “First impressions of the RZTS46 are very good. The zero-turn functionality means no uncut grass patch remains, while the steering wheel is easy to love compared to traditional lap-bars, and very popular among the 10 strong course building team.”
