GREENKEEPER WINS BEST STUDENT
Ransomes Jacobsen sponsored prize at Myerscough College

Chris Trimble

Chris Trimble greenkeeper at The Mere Golf Resort and Spa in Knutsford, Cheshire, is this year’s recipient of the Ransomes Jacobsen-sponsored best student award at Myerscough College.

For the past three years, Chris has been studying for his BSc Sportsturf Science and Management degree and graduated this summer. He began his career at Royston Golf Club in 2007 before taking up a six-month seasonal position at The Mere. He subsequently joined the greenkeeping team at Sunningdale, before returning to The Mere on a permanent basis is 2013. In July this year he was a member of the R&A volunteer team providing tournament support at The Open at Royal Liverpool Golf Club.

In recognition of his achievement, he will be invited to the Jacobsen Future Turf Managers programme, held annually at Charlotte in North Carolina, where he will spend a week with recent US graduates to broaden his understanding of the global turf maintenance sector.

Chris said: “I was very surprised and delighted to receive this award and I am really looking forward to my trip to Charlotte. Ransomes Jacobsen have long and established links with Myerscough, supporting specialist turfcare education at all levels. I thank them for this opportunity.”

Course tutor Stewart Brown added: “Chris has worked consistently hard for three years and proved to be a very able and excellent student. His academic study has been of the highest order and he is a very proficient greenkeeper. He is well on his way to achieving his ambition of becoming a Golf Course Manager and thoroughly deserves this Higher Education accolade.”

Kyle Hawthornwaite, who completed his Level 2 Diploma in Sportsturf won the Ransomes Jacobsen Further Education Award. He will be returning to Myerscough to take a level 3 qualification at the beginning of the new academic year.

Course Tutor Veda West said,  “Kyle has made excellent progress this year in terms of his attitude and commitment to the course. He has a strong work ethic and an aptitude for leadership.”
