TURF LIFE
A view from the dug-out
YOU may remember a couple of week's ago we put a request for help identifying some mystery brushes which had rotted away, in this Briefing. Well, we're very pleased to report that Haverfordwest County AFC who were asking for our readers' assistance, say they have been " inundated with replies and good advice." Following a suggestion, the club's Richard Friday says he got in touch with Brushes North West and has placed an order. Richard said, "Thank you for passing on my needs via your newsletter and many thanks for everyone’s advice. I am a elderly groundsman who is new to the field. Up to now I have been helping to run the club with the Secretary and Chairman who was our also our groundsman. Him leaving has really left a hole." Turf Pro are delighted to have been able to help Richard and are once again very grateful to be part of the UK turfcare industry which continually proves itself to be an incredibly friendly and supportive environment.
SAD news from the Rossendale Free Press, Bob Torrance, the former head greenkeeper at Rossendale Golf Club and father of Ryder Cup winner Sam Torrance, has died at the age of 82. Son Sam broke the news of Bob’s passing on Twitter on Friday, July 18. He said: “Sad day my dad just passed away peacefully in his sleep. Really going to miss him.” Bob was best known for his work with Irishman Padraig Harrington, who he tutored to both his Open Championship triumphs in 2007 and 2008.
AFTER the slightly odd spectacle of dancing teacakes and SuBo forgetting her lines, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow are going from strength-to-strength. It's great to see healthy rivalries played out in a sporting and friendly manner, across a host of sports we only get to see on our screens during special occasions such as these. Although as The Daily Telegraph reports, maybe not so friendly at the Kelvingrove centre where the lawn bowls has been playing out amid scenes which would put the ribald atmosphere of an Old Firm derby to shame (almost). Firstly groundsman Chris suffered the same fate as his namesake Sir Chris Hoy, by being refused entry to his own practice green over a tiny discrepancy with his accreditation by an over-officious official. And then Alex Marshall of the Scotland pairs, having come back from behind against the England team to make it through to today's final, delivered what can only be described as a "gerrit up yer" gesture to a certain section of the crowd!
