FROM WINTER TO SUMMER SPORTS
April is a busy period
by TurfPro Editor, Laurence Gale MSC, MBPR

As always it will be the weather that dictates what can be achieved in this short window of change.

The month of April is without doubt one of the busiest months for practicing groundsman, greenkeepers, contractors and sports turf professionals.

The end of April signals the end of the winter games season, with both the football and rugby union seasons coming to an end, followed quickly by a robust end of season renovation programme.

April is also a busy time for greenkeepers who are now perhaps finishing off their winter course works, while at the same time completing their spring renovation programmes on tees, greens and fairways.

However, the biggest challenge, especially for many of the school and college groundsmen, is overseeing the change over from winter sports to summer sports. Most large independent schools usually offer a plethora of summer sports that include athletics, cricket, archery, rounders, softball, and tennis.

As always it will be the weather that dictates what can be achieved in this short window of change. This year we have been blessed with very favourable weather conditions, with higher than average soil and air temperatures that initiated a good flush of growth in March.

As I mentioned in a recent spring renovation blog, the essence of a good renovation is planning and carrying out the desired work to achieve your aims and objectives. For most winter games pitches at grass roots level, it should be about relieving compaction, reintroducing some new seed and repairing worn areas. Do not skimp on these works, invest in a good quality grass seed mixtures and, if budgets allow, top dress and fertilise your pitches.

Each year the cricket season, seems to start earlier, with many cricket clubs seeing matches start early April. No doubt a busy time, especially for the county cricket guys - and particularly Tim Packwood at Worcester CCC, who as usual started this season with his outfield flooded by the River Severn.

I particularly like April, seeing the hedges, spring flowering trees and shrubs coming into leaf and blossom, which in turn signals the start of the main grass cutting season. A recent trip to Tatton Park, Cheshire with Paul Todd, manager of the Green Flag Awards enabled us to see at first hand the gardens in full colour. April is a busy time for Paul and his team, as they have to initiate the start of the annual Green Flag awards judging process, where over 500 judges from all over the country take time out to visit and inspect over 1800, UK parks and public open spaces. I myself usually get five or six parks to judge each year, along with some mystery shopping visits.

The Green Flag Awards scheme has been running for well over twenty years and has become standard benchmark for local authorities (LA’s) to work towards in delivering effective parks services.

Ideally you should have had your mowers serviced and sharpened ready for the new season. For many LA’s the start of the grass cutting season is often quite a challenge, with many still facing severe cut backs in funding. Many have had to change their cutting regime policies, often reducing the number of cutting cycles per year.

This will have a knock-on effect in terms of what machinery they will need to use to achieve a finish that is acceptable. In the past, in the days of 30-cuts-per-year regimes, many authorities use to use cylinder reel mowers. However, over the last ten years with cutting cycles down to less than 15-cuts-per-year, rotary mowers have been the first choice of mower to fulfil requirements.

We are now though, seeing some LA’s reducing their cutting regimes further still with many now only able to afford ten or less cuts per year - coupled with many instigating the now popular wildflower areas, that require only a single annual cut and collect regime.

This has meant many contractors now have to invest in new and often specialist equipment to cope with these ever-changing mowing regimes. Flail cut and collect mowers are becoming more popular investments for councils and contractors to cope with these new demands.

Personally, I think there needs to be a balance between quality and quantity. Allowing the grass to grow too long on road side verges will no doubt lead to other issues such as litter collection and sight lines. The grass cutting regime should reflect the characteristics of the borough or town and its surroundings.

We now have a fantastic array of machinery and equipment to help maintain our ever-changing landscape requirements. The real skill and challenge is to convince people to invest in the appropriate resources to deliver an acceptable level of service for our communities.

HYBRID GRASS ROLLED OUT AT TOP UK CRICKET CLUBS
With installation technology developed by SIS Pitches

SISGrass Unversal at Lord's

SIS Pitches has installed pioneering hybrid cricket pitches at County Cricket Clubs across the United Kingdom ahead of the 2019 cricket season.

SIS Pitches has installed pioneering hybrid cricket pitches at County Cricket Clubs across the United Kingdom ahead of the 2019 cricket season.

The surface installation technology has been developed exclusively by SIS Pitches and comes as new research reveals it could have significant benefits for players and clubs.

SISGrass Unversal at Lord's

The breakthrough has been possible thanks to SISGrass Universal, a compact and 100% electric machine with patented fibre injection technology, which the company says combines speed, mobility and laser precision to deliver high-quality hybrid turf surfaces.

SISGrass hybrid cricket pitches have been installed and trialled in practice net areas and on main ground squares at a number of County Cricket Clubs since 2017.

Together with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), SIS Pitches commissioned research by Dr Iain James, cricket pitch specialist at TGMS Ltd, on SISGrass installed pitches at the Kia Oval, home to Surrey County Cricket Club, designed to provide insight into playability, durability, maintenance and renovation of hybrid wickets.

The Oval

The report found that the pitches improved surface stability, reduced wear, reduced bowler foot holes and significantly extended hours of playing time. Further research this summer will be carried out to ascertain whether there is increased pace and carry, and more consistent bounce from hybrid pitches.

The ECB became the first to install two trial wickets using SISGrass technology at the prestigious National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough and they have now approved hybrid pitches for use in the Royal London One Day Cup, Vitality Blast and all formats of second XI cricket for the 2019 season.

The pitches combine a majority of natural turf grass with less than 5% of uniquely engineered, soft polyethylene yarn, a system which has also been used to improve the quality of golf tees, goal areas, tennis courts and pitch surrounds.

In addition, repair works after play were reduced with a faster grass recovery time, while the surface remained more than 95% natural turf, meaning it will crucially still behave like a normal wicket.

Chris Wood, ECB’s Pitches Consultant, said, “The ECB is delighted with the incredibly positive results of these stitched, reinforced hybrid pitches to date and feedback from County Clubs has been most profound and encouraging.

“SIS Pitches have demonstrated their willingness through imaginative foresight, attention to detail and technological development towards converting a notion into reality which through the ongoing research since conception.

“This product has the potential to be a real gamechanger for the future of cricket, particularly in the lucrative, limited over, whiteball form of the game through increased usage and possible freeing up of central TV pitches, most importantly, without sacrificing quality over quantity.

“I’m aware that many clubs and indeed international governing bodies are viewing the ongoing progress with increasing interest.”

Weighing less than two tons and standing at 1.20m wide and 2m in length, the SISGrass Universal machine provides quick, accurate and flexible stitching, with different depths and spacing using precise laser guidance making it a practical solution for groundskeepers who are challenged to maintain uniform grass quality in high-wear areas.

Trent Bridge, close up

One 10ft cricket pitch strip contains approximately 190,000 individual stitches of SISGrass fibre, made up of 46kg of yarn, totalling 38km, and can be installed in just five hours using SISGrass Universal.

After installation, pitches are maintained for a minimum of eight weeks to allow the profile to settle and for all holes to close and anchor the SISGrass fibres.

Phil Blackwell, SISGrass Director in the UK, said, “Some of the world’s biggest professional rugby and football teams have already seen significant benefits from the introduction of our hybrid pitch technology, and SISGrass Universal has the potential to transform the maintenance and durability of cricket pitches.

“We’re excited to see the impact it’s already having in the UK and anticipate demand from cricket clubs around the world.

“Our research and feedback from clubs and ground staff has been extremely positive so far, and our hope is that in the future hybrid pitches can be used as an alternative option to traditional wickets for practice and short formats of the game.”

Trent Bridge

Following successful trial installations, and positive feedback from players, coaches and ground staff, the demand for hybrid cricket pitches has increased with many of the top county cricket grounds choosing to have between two and six installed.

Hybrid cricket pitches have now been installed at Surrey, Lord’s, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire, Glamorgan, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Durham, Worcestershire, Warwickshire and at Loughborough University.

Company owner Danny Wright with the Toro LT3340

Cambridge based groundscare company Brookfield Groundcare say they invested in a Toro LT3340 triple cylinder mower because of the “excellent back up service."

Cambridge based groundscare company Brookfield Groundcare has recently invested in a Toro LT3340 triple cylinder mower because of the “excellent back up service provided by Reesink Turfcare” says company owner, Danny Wright.

Company owner Danny Wright with the Toro LT3340

With 15 years in the business maintaining everything from small gardens to huge country estates for private and commercial clients across Cambridgeshire, Newmarket and Suffolk, Danny says having a reliable backup service is vital.

“Reesink is known for providing really good customer support particularly when it comes to its backup service,” he said. “I know that if there was ever a problem with our machine, they would get a replacement out to me immediately. When you’re a relatively small business with a wide client base, that’s vital. I’d actually say that the backup is just as important, if not more than, the quality of the machine itself.”

After recently securing more school and council clients, the company needed a new machine to help cope with the increase in work.

“When I was looking for a new machine, I went directly to Reesink to organise a demonstration,” says Danny. “The LT3340 impressed me so much I didn’t see the need to test out any other brands. I decided pretty much there and then to get it.

“It’s a lot quicker in operation,” he says. “Based on the performance of the machine, and the service that Reesink provides, it’s likely that as the company continues to grow there’ll be more investment in Toro.”

Adare Manor, located near Limerick, recognised as “Golf Resort of the Year” at the Ireland Golf Tour Operator Association (IGTOA) Awards 2018, has taken delivery of a new fleet of golf and utility vehicles.

Club Car, an Official Supplier of the European Tour and a brand of Ingersoll Rand, supplied a new fleet featuring 25 Precedent golf cars to service the redesigned golf course at Adare Manor, which recently joined fellow Club Car customers Royal County Down and Royal Portrush among Ireland’s top five courses*.

Andy McMahon, Director of Golf Operations at Adare Manor, said: “We are a five-star venue and our key focus is to deliver the highest possible service. We chose Club Car because its quality, reliability and after-sales service make it the superior brand.

“The aesthetic is paramount at Adare Manor, and with the upgraded seats and alloys, the integrated cool box, raincover and black roof, we have received a sleek and high-spec product that is well suited to our world class resort.”

The 25 golf cars feature Club Car’s connectivity solution, Visage. Visage not only enables staff to remotely control the golf car fleet, create no-drive zones around delicate areas of the course, and monitor pace of play, but the in-car touchscreen also gives golfers precise shot and distance information, flyover video graphics of each hole, and a live leaderboard during competitions.

The fleet, delivered and maintained by local dealers Buggyman, also features a range of utility vehicles to assist with resort operations, including one Transporter 6, one Café Express, and two Housekeeping Utility vehicles.

The last 12 months have seen Club Car bolster its strong reputation across the “Emerald Isle”, with other esteemed venues such as Carton House, St Anne’s Golf Club, Palmerston House Golf Club, all located near Dublin, as well as Dromoland Castle Golf & Country Club, near Limerick, all taking delivery of Club Car fleets.

TIMING KEY FOR SPRING WEED CONTROL

Roundup® ProVantage

Amenity managers and contractors should plan weed control operations carefully in catchy spring weather, warns Bayer, manufacturer of glyphosate herbicide Roundup® ProVantage.

Amenity managers and contractors should plan weed control operations carefully in catchy spring weather, warns Bayer, manufacturer of glyphosate herbicide Roundup® ProVantage.

Roundup® Development Manager Barrie Hunt explains: “Following a relatively mild but unsettled winter, the forecast now looks more promising, but May can still bring high diurnal temperature ranges and overnight frosts. Applying glyphosate too early can lead to reduced weed control.”

Mr Hunt points out that knowing how glyphosate works can prove very helpful in understanding how performance varies in different situations.

“Glyphosate works by leaf uptake and translocation to the growing points in both shoots and roots.”

“Plants need to be healthy and have sufficient leaf growth to absorb the Roundup. Perennial plants like thistles had a stop-start emergence with temperatures fluctuating significantly since mid-February whereas seed germination was less impacted; however, dry soils in late March delayed emergence. Spraying by the calendar can result in herbicide being applied before sufficient leaf area has emerged.”

The variable weather can also slow the effects of herbicide applications.

“Even with good leaf coverage, low soil temperatures and high diurnal air temperature ranges resulting in slow plant growth mean visible symptoms can take up to four weeks rather than the expected 10-14 days. However, the end result will be the same.”

Best practice in application is also important, comments Mr Hunt.

“Operators should pay close attention to correct water volumes and proper sprayer calibration, choosing appropriate nozzles and avoiding drift for optimum efficacy.”
Roundup ProVantage helps amenity professionals meet the challenge of catchy conditions. It is more concentrated at 480g glyphosate per litre and the optimised blend of surfactants as well as the high loading makes it Monsanto’s most advanced amenity glyphosate.

Superior performance includes improved rainfastness and speed of uptake. Rainfast in one hour for annuals and four hours for perennials, Roundup ProVantage reduces the risk of run off from that unexpected shower and ensures the maximum amount of glyphosate reaches the roots for the optimum effectiveness. It also offers reduced off-target exposure through 33% less drift, giving operators the confidence to apply in a wide range of groundcare situations.
