AND FINALLY . . .
Man City keep pests (and vampires) away
Manchester City's groundsman Lee Jackson hit the headlines last week after it was revealed that the Eitihad Stadium's distinct aroma comes from spraying the pitch with liquid garlic to keep it parasite free.
As explained by the Manchester Evening News and picked up by news outlets worldwide, the pungent treatment, which stops the parasites from damaging the roots of the grass, has been a regular feature at the stadium and City’s City Football Academy for two years and also helps to treat fungal infections.
The smell was apparent to fans again last Wednesday as they were leaving the stadium following the 4-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champion’s League.
Man City use a state-of-the-art Desso GrassMaster hybrid pitch which utilises 20million artificial grass fibres injected into the turf. It means the lack of sunlight and fresh air inside the stadium doesn’t affect the quality of the grass. Their pitch is widely seen as one of the best in the Premier League with Lee Jackson nominated Premier League Groundsman of the Year numerous times – winning the award in 2011.
The garlic story was picked up by most of the UK tabloids and as far afield as Fox Sports Asia.
