CLUB FEARS FOR NEXT SEASON DUE TO PITCH VANDALISM
Carlisle Cricket Club targeted

Carlise Cricket Club in Cumbria, is the latest local sporting facility to be blighted by vandalism.

The News & Star reported that six wickets at the club had bleach or bleaching agent poured over them some time between September 7 and 26. These actions have killed the grass and the club are concerned that this could have long-term implications and potentially threaten their start to the 2016 season.

The club’s chairman Mike Rayson told the local paper, "We’re hoping that it’s just bleaching agent. At the moment we’re keeping it heavily watered in the hope that it will just wash out, similar to when you get something in your eyes. If it’s bleach itself, then it could be a different story.

“We’ve not seen anything like it before,” he continues. “Our groundsman has been here for about 40 years and this is the first time he’s seen anything like it, too.

“The next three months are going to be vital for us. That’s when we’ll how badly the pitch has been damaged. The problem is that two of our hardest wickets have been affected.”

If the pitch does not recover, it will have to be dug up and re-laid

“We really hope that isn’t going to be the case,” Mr Rayson is quoted. “It would mean we wouldn’t be able to use the pitches again for a further 12 months while it beds in and would really set us back for next season.”

Cumbrian Police are appealing for any information.
