SIGNS OF GROWTH
And potential for more?
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs

With the news that more agricultural tractors have been sold this year than had been previously thought, are the signs there for growth as we move towards 2020?

The news we're featuring from the AEA today is rather interesting.

It turns out they have been provided with some less than accurate information from the DVLA during the course of this year, which has led to some previously published figures regarding the registrations of tractors in 2019 to be revised. In the world of agricultural tractor sales, this year has actually been better than had been previously thought.

The figures which we've been given today, now play into the narrative we've been hearing from many of our dealer readers this year, that it's been very much an up and down kind of season. There's been some slow months, interspersed with some periods of quite intense activity.

The positive news with this development today though, is that the ag tractor sector is said to be 6.1% up on where it was after 8 months in 2018.

Dealers won't be hanging out the bunting and disappearing to the pub early today on the basis of that news of course, but at least there's some solace to be taken in what the AEA's agricultural economist, Stephen Howarth describes as a "..broadly stable market in the first half of this year". Following what many experienced in 2018, this is a definite improvement.

This opinion ties in with what dealers were told at the recent Stiga conferences, where md Gary Whitney was describing what's gone on in the domestic market this year as a "season without a punch". Again, some welcome respite.

But where might we be heading? To be fair, at the moment if anyone were to be brave enough to predict that with any degree of certainty, they would be taking their reputation in their hands to say the least!

However we wouldn't be doing our duty as a journal and a forum for discussion and debate if we didn't ask what our readers and figures in the industry think might happen.

To this end, in the next issue of Service Dealer magazine, which we've been putting the finishing touches to this week before it makes its journey to the printers, we have a special feature lined up talking to a couple of senior industry figures who share with us some of their beliefs based on their years' of experience. We hear from representatives of a domestic machinery supplier and a maker of professional and ag machinery.

It was very interesting talking to these guys, hearing what they thought might lie in store over the next little while for both their own companies and indeed their dealer networks - the fortunes of both being inextricably linked.

In terms of what's to come, both were talking of a desire and a belief in growth ahead. Neither were being over-the-top or bullish in their assessments, I didn't feel. Both to me seemed realistic, yet quietly confident in their outlooks. Each genuinely felt there should be achievable avenues of growth as we move into 2020.

The shadow hanging over this of course, is what has beset everyone this year and shows little sign of letting up - the uncertainly around everything. Uncertainty is affecting manufactures, dealers and customers alike. Despite the acknowledged reality of this this though, there still seems to be the belief that across the machinery sectors which our readers deal in, there is potential for growth next year.

Interestingly, I read a release from the American trade body, the OPEI, this week, which mirrored in many ways what we've been seeing over here - and perhaps will see in the coming year. They have just issued their autumn quarterly forecast, which predicts a strong finish to 2019 and growth in U.S. shipments of outdoor power equipment in 2020.

In a piece which is well worth a read, Kris Kiser, President and CEO of the OPEI is quoted as saying, “Our forecast indicates that 2019 will finish with moderate year-over-year growth in several key segments, and the industry will post more gains in 2020." He cites professional grass cutting machinery and battery equipment as areas where they are seeing particular potential for upswings.

Whilst there are marked differences between our two markets, it's always interesting to take note of the situation over there because there are clearly parallels.

One would imagine if a degree of steady and stable growth is able to be achieved in our market too, that will have to be considered as an almighty effort under the circumstances.

NEWS
REVISED TRACTOR REGISTRATION FIGURES SHOW YEARLY IMPROVEMENT
AEA discover discrepancy

2019's tractor registration figures have been revised

Due to a significant number of registration forms not being sent by the DVLA to the AEA, the tractor registration figures previously published for the year have been discovered to be incorrect.

The AEA has announced that they recently identified some problems with the figures for UK tractor registrations published since the start of 2019.

This was due, they say, to a significant number of registration forms not being sent by DVLA to the AEA. Since the Association confirmed that there was a discrepancy, they have been working with DVLA to correct the figures and are now able to issue updated figures for the year to date.

Stephen Howarth, agricultural economist at the AEA, said of the new figures, "These show that registrations of agricultural tractors (over 50hp) in the first seven months of the year were up 9% on the same period last year; the figures previously published showed a decline of 3% in the year to July. At 8,556, the number of tractors registered was nearly 700 higher than in January-July 2018 and just over 900 more than previously thought."

The table below shows the revised figures for January to July and the figure for August, which is published for the first time.

Stephen Howarth continued, "The figures have been revised upwards for every month in 2019, with the biggest change being for tractors registered in March. That month now shows a 12% year-on-year increase, compared with a 6% decline in the figures previously published.

"In interpreting the annual change, it is worth bearing in mind that registrations for the first half of 2018 will have been supressed following a large number of machines being pre-registered in December 2017, ahead of the introduction of the 'Mother Regulation'. Therefore, the increase seen so far in 2019 probably indicates a broadly stable market in the first half of this year, rather than a growing one.

"After an upturn in July, perhaps partly due to a limited number of pre-registrations ahead of another regulatory change, registrations in August dropped below year earlier levels again, for the third time in four months. At 712 machines, the monthly total was 17% down on August 2018. This suggests that, after a relatively strong start to the year, registrations have slowed down as ongoing economic and political uncertainty are creating a drag on demand.

"Nevertheless, registrations during the first eight months of the year were still up 6% on the same period in 2018."

TOP GROUNDCARE TRACTOR BRAND AS VOTED BY PRO END USERS REVEALED
Second part of unique groundcare research released

Which groundcare tractor brand came out on top?

TAP, the owners of Service Dealer, have published the next part of their unique sector insight, this time revealing what professional end users consider to be their favourite groundcare tractor brands.

TAP, the owners of Service Dealer, have published the next part of their unique sector insight, this time revealing what professional end users consider to be their favourite groundcare tractor brands.

For this research, the thoughts of turf professionals were sought via canvassing the readers of the TurfPro Weekly Briefing. This follows on from research conducted by TAP earlier this year into the opinions of specialist dealers regarding the tractor brands they deal in.

Shaun Cooper, head of insight at TAP, said, "With an ever-increasing number of compact tractor brands to choose from, groundcare professionals have a tougher decision to make when looking for a new piece of kit. So we wanted to find out which brands are rated the highest, by the professionals."

As part of the survey, the turf professionals who responded were asked to rate twelve different groundcare tractor brands against four different attributes. The attributes were ‘Quality’; ‘Innovation’; ‘Value for Money’ and ‘After-sales Support’.

To discover which brand came out on top, click here.

Also by clicking through, interested parties will be able to register for a Summary Document of all the findings which will be available from TAP in mid-October.

Shaun Cooper continued, "This installment of our research which we're releasing today makes fascinating reading. A total of 77 groundcare professionals responded to our survey, making this a valuable piece of research.

"Also, we are aware that when we released the first part of this survey a couple of weeks ago, some users may have experienced technical difficulties in registering for the summary document. We have made sure now that all gremlins have been eliminated from the system, so please sign up for the full findings!"

As well as their presence in the sharpening systems sector, Bernhard and Company say their intention is to offer more knowledge to turf specialists through their education and training courses.

On June 11th this year the company launched their Academy at their factory facilities in Haverhill, Suffolk.

Working in partnership with Mow-Sure Training Ltd, Bernhards say the Academy aims to train customers, technicians and distributors’ sales team to promote turf health, cutting precision and superior playability and eventually learn how to get the most out of Bernhard’s product range.

This accredited training will be delivered in several different formats from hands-on training, to theory based or online learning. A wide range of modular and short courses are available too.

Interested parties are now able to register their interest for these courses. the manufacturer urges people not to delay as these places are only available on a first come, first serve basis.

PREMIER LEAGUE DEAL FOR BALMERS
Fleet order from Burnley FC

Burnley FC head groundsman Barry O’Brien (centre front) and his team with the new John Deere machinery fleet at the Barnfield Training Ground

Balmers GM has completed a deal with Burnley FC’s Barnfield Training Ground for the club's first order of John Deere machinery.

At Burnley FC’s Barnfield Training Ground, the Premier League club’s first order for John Deere machinery from local dealership Balmers GM has bedded in at what is reportedly Britain’s first football facility of its kind.

Burnley FC head groundsman Barry O’Brien (centre front) and his team with the new John Deere machinery fleet at the Barnfield Training Ground

The 10ha Barnfield site includes 15 pitches altogether, including four full-size Desso and a 60 x 40m goalkeeper area in the first team zone, plus three and a half full-size Fibresand surfaces and two full-size natural soil pitches (topped up with sand over the years) in the Academy areas. The site also includes a full-size outdoor Desso 3G and indoor Desso 60 x 40m 3G. All pitches are split up into sizes appropriate for different age ranges and all feature full drainage, with Rainbird irrigation systems throughout the site.

Head groundsman Barry O’Brien leads a nine-strong team and has witnessed plenty of changes in his 11 years here, the latest his own doing. After lengthy spells specifying other major turf machinery brands, Barry thought it was time to try John Deere. Following extensive trials, he specified the equipment required to cope with exacting conditions both outside and indoors.

The new tractor and mower fleet meets fresh demands that are centred on changing turfcare practices at the ground. For example, gone is the early ‘fluffy’ cut after the team fitted different rollers and adopted a more aggressive maintenance regime of raking out and brushing. “We had a grass factory here, generating far too much growth,” says Barry. “It would challenge any kit, but we’re fine now after adapting the way we do things.”

Balmer’s golf & turf area manager Andrew Meeks, whose family are Clarets fans (although he supports Liverpool!), agrees: “We’ve grown with each other over the years, so it was just a question of responding to Barry’s needs and supplying them, while working closely with the team to deliver the results they wanted.” Barry adds: “In doing that, we’ve developed a trusted relationship that has also helped us to expand our knowledge base.”

Barry O’Brien’s said of their X950R commercial lawn tractor for example, that it "..fits perfectly into the different approaches our grounds team is taking with football pitches – lighter rolling, clearing out and raking. Also, it stands the grass up so that cutting is more effective and reduces the risk of matting. We’d like another one of them, especially fitted with slick tyres.”

Barry also sees the value of his three 7700A PrecisionCut cylinder mowers in this environment. “They serve the football application just as well as they do golf. Obviously the sports differ, but in many ways they lend themselves to similar machinery applications. The customised grass boxes and nylon rollers are also major benefits.”

Barry concluded, “It’s not just about the machinery but what you do with the turf between times that allows you to achieve the best results and benefits. That said, I saw the brilliant back-up we were getting from Balmers and the team’s confidence in the kit, and knew the combination would win through.”

AUTOMOWER COMPETITION WINNER RECEIVES PRIZE
From Husqvarna and Louth Tractors

L-R Abigail Jones (winner), Arnold Blanshard (Louth Tractors), Andrew Lees (Husqvarna)

Abigail Jones from Lincolnshire is the winner of the recent competition that saw entrants try to guess the location of a robot based on clues provided over a number of weeks.

Abigail Jones (48) from Lincolnshire is the winner of Husqvarna’s recent ’Hunt for Automower’ competition.

The initiative, which was launched to celebrate the release of the 435X AWD model in February, saw entrants try to guess the location of a product based on clues provided by the company over a number of weeks.

L-R Abigail Jones (winner), Arnold Blanshard (Louth Tractors), Andrew Lees (Husqvarna)

Abigail guessed correctly, choosing Oberstdorf, Germany, where the 435X AWD went up and down the landing area of Heini Klopfer Schanze, the world’s third biggest ski jump slope. Abigail wins a brand new 435X AWD as the competition’s prize.

Seeing the technology at work for the first time at 2018’s Lincolnshire Show, Abigail was immediately impressed and could see how it would benefit her property and her partner’s family business, Rigsby Wold Holiday Cottages - part of Rigsby Farming Co Ltd.

Local dealer, Louth Tractors, provided the installation and ensured the product was up and running for Abigail.

Discussing her joy of winning, Abigail commented: ”When I found out my first thoughts were immediate disbelief, quickly followed by elation. I was over the moon to have won the product which I was so impressed by.

”I’d consider myself a fairweather gardener, who is reluctant in bad weather and passionate when the sun shines. I’m excited to see the Automower handle our lawn and the many slopes which have been a challenge for us in the past to mow.

”I will now focus on establishing the next border and planting in our garden - things which I have not previously had the time to do.”

Husqvarna UK category manager - Lawn, Andrew Lees, said: ”Huge congratulations to Abigal on winning the competition.

”The robotic mower is perfectly suited to its new surroundings, maintaining the lawn of the winner’s holiday cottage. The location has a steepening sloped garden at the back of the property and was challenging to cut with a conventional mower, not only will this save time on cutting the lawn, it will also ensure that paying guests will always look out onto a pristine and green lawn."

CLOVER FARM SERVICES APPOINTED AS LINCS FIRST LANDINI DEALER
Operating out of Swineshead

L-R: Dwayn Clover of Clover Farm Services with Tim Lawrence, Argo Tractors area sales manager for the eastern counties

The family-run business, based south of Boston, has got off to an enthusiastic start by running two demonstration units.

Clover Farm Services has been appointed as Lincolnshire’s first Landini tractor dealer.

L-R: Dwayn Clover of Clover Farm Services with Tim Lawrence, Argo Tractors area sales manager for the eastern counties

The family-run business, operating out of Swineshead, south of Boston, has got off to an enthusiastic start by running two demonstration units – a top of the range 206/225hp Landini 7-230 Robo-Six and a 119hp version of the mid-range Landini 6H series complete with MClassic100 loader.

“The wide range of products available was an important factor in our decision to switch to Landini for our tractor franchise,” says director Dwayn Clover.

“It’s a fantastic product range and one that really suits the diversity of tractor users and their requirements in this area.”

Ben Agar, UK and Ireland sales director at Landini manufacturer Argo Tractors, says the enthusiasm shown for this new partnership by the whole Clover Farm Services team will be a great asset.

“They are enthusiastic, indeed passionate about the opportunities presented by the Landini product range, and that’s just what we like to see in our dealers, along with a determination to support the products they supply to the best of their abilities.”

The appointment of Clover Farm Services as a Landini dealership coincides with signings for another two Italian franchises - Alpego tillage and seeding equipment, and Faresin telehandlers – as the company embarks on a growth plan in its tenth year.

“This is a big step for us; there’s a lot to learn and a lot of work to be done,” says Dwayn Clover. “But it’s also a big opportunity and working with the Landini people has been absolutely refreshing as they have the same drive, energy and enthusiasm for the products.”

The machinery sales, service and repairs business is operated alongside farming and agricultural contracting operations, with Dwayn Clover’s partner Sharon Barnes handling administration and marketing.

His eldest son Joshua is service manager, second son Jake runs the contracting service, and Ryan Mead handles sales – although as an ‘all hands on deck’ business, Jake and Ryan also wield the spanners when there are service, repair and installation jobs to be done.

Team Clover (from left): Ryan Mead, Jake and Dwayn Clover, Sharon Barnes and Joshua Clover

“My youngest sons Leo and Lewis like to get involved with the business when they’re not at school,” adds Mr Clover, “and we’re looking to recruit another service engineer as a result of taking on the Landini and new equipment franchises.”

These new ventures for Clover Farm Services will be launched at the British National Ploughing Championships on 12/13 October at Nocton, Lincs and the Midlands Machinery Show, Newark, Notts on 20/21 November.

A number of key industry experts will be uniting to collaboratively tackle the biggest issues facing the groundscare environment at SALTEX 2019, which takes place at the NEC, Birmingham on October 30 and 31.

Learning LIVE, SALTEX’s all-encompassing and free-to-attend education programme will take place in four dedicated seminar theatres with presentations and panel debates running from 10am through to 3.30pm each day of the show.

Learning LIVE 2019 to tackle industry issues at SALTEX 2019

Featuring over 50 CPD accredited seminars involving more than 100 expert speakers, the programme has been developed by leading industry partners and influencers to provide support, insight and real solutions to key industry issues.

Learning LIVE will kickstart with ‘Creating Champions’ telling the story of grounds staff’s contribution to this summer’s biggest weekend of sporting success. A spectacular line-up, including Neil Stubley (AELTC, Wimbledon) and Karl McDermott (Lord’s), will explain how to deliver exceptional surfaces for the world’s most prestigious sports events.

Findings from the IOG’s recent research document Groundsmanship – Sports’ Vital Profession will be presented by the IOG’s CEO Geoff Webb and consultant research lead, Carol Doran. Meanwhile, football grounds personnel can enjoy a rare opportunity to sit in on the ‘Tottenham Hotspur FC Experience’ seminar. Head groundsman Gary Lee reveals how the state-of-the art 62,000-capacity stadium pitches were built.

From Premiership to grassroots groundsmanship, there’s something for everyone at Learning LIVE. Pitch advisors from the IOG-led Grounds and Natural Turf Improvement Programme (GaNTIP) will be presenting case studies of successful pitch improvements, and also offering advice on how to secure funding.

In the ‘Class Acts’ seminar Ian Avery (Sutton Valence School) explores how independent schools can balance internal and external demands on their pitches. Ian will focus on costings, timings and benefits to the school, plus the problems, and solutions, of quick turnarounds on multi-sport pitches. Giles Roberts (St Peter’s School), Lee Marshallsay (Charterhouse) and Danny Beckley (Harrow School) will also be discussing best practices to help your pitches stand out in a competitive market.

Recent regulations relating to plant protection products (PPP) have had a significant impact on turf management, and Learning LIVE attendees can expect to find answers in a seminar entitled ‘Pesticide 2020 and Beyond’. With a number of widely used insecticides, fungicides and herbicides having been withdrawn in recent times, Dr Colin Mumford (Bayer) will be on hand to explain the current status of PPP, what PPP are being withdrawn or introduced, and how to get optimum results from them.

Cricket grounds personnel can find out about ongoing research carried out by First Class Counties and England’s Centre of Excellence, and an elite panel, featuring Andy McKay (Sussex CCC) Gary Barwell (Warwickshire CCC) and Will Relf (Loughborough University), will be explaining how hybrid pitches in cricket are learning lessons from football. Industry legend Chris Wood, the ECB’s international pitches consultant, is set to captivate the audience with his stories as he looks back through his career in ‘A Lifetime in Groundsmanship’.

Elsewhere, climatologist Jim Dale is presenting ‘Managing Climate Change’ to ensure turf professionals stay one step ahead; ICL’s Dr Andy Owen and PhD student at Royal Holloway University, Tamsin Williams, offer an insight into their four-year research project on the effects of seaweed products on turf grass plant parasitic nematodes; industry consultant Peter Corbett discusses ‘Life Without Propiconazole’; and Question Time with the Amenity Forum will no doubt spark a lively debate around the use of pesticides and their alternatives.
