EXEMPLARY SERVICE
At dealerships around the country
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs

Steve Gibbs

I have been privy to some extraordinary tales of true entrepreneurship taking place at businesses all across the UK.

Firstly today, a reminder that it's SALTEX next week, taking place at the NEC on Wednesday and Thursday.

Service Dealer will be in attendance again - so if any readers find themselves wondering past STAND H010, please do drop by and say hi to the team.

It will be interesting to see just how many dealers do choose to make the trip to Birmingham this year. It was an incredibly busy September again for the network, with many manufacturers and suppliers holding their own conferences and dealer days at venues around the country throughout the month. Speaking to our readers we're well aware of the pressures a period like this creates, trying to attend as many events as required.

So will this perhaps mean that dealers feel they've seen enough new product this autumn? Or more to the point, have spent enough time away from the business?

At least a train strike scheduled for day two of the show has been postponed to the following week now. That might have had quite the adverse affect on visitor numbers were it to have gone ahead next Thursday.

Anyway, I genuinely believe that SALTEX is a valuable and worthwhile day out for those who can spare the time away from the place of work. Perhaps if a trip is possible this year, it will offer some fresh inspiration or a new avenue for future success in the dealership?

Dealer Of The Year Awards 2022

Speaking of success in the dealership, it was my privilege yesterday to form a part of the judging panel for the magazine's 2022 Dealer Of The Year Awards.

I feel I say this every year - but it holds true - the standard of entries received has been exemplary. The panel has now meticulously worked their way through all the nominations for businesses, apprentices, leaders, initiatives and stars. Some tough, tight calls had to be made, but a consensus was finally reached.

I must say, it's a process that genuinely warms my cockles each year, reading all the amazing stories of how our readers are showing true entrepreneurial spirit, to nurture and grow their businesses and their teams. The panel is privy to accounts from dealers themselves, from staff members, from suppling manufacturers and from the most important people of all, the customers - all of whom have fascinating stories to tell.

For example, just some random examples of satisfied end-user testimonials I read included -

  • "Their passion and customer service that they deliver is top rate."
  • "I was blown away by the service I received."
  • "The service has been exceptional."

These few comments are indicative of the plethora of supportive evidence the team organising the Awards received this year. But I must say, this is no great surprise.

Whenever I've had the honour of taking part in judging in the past, these are the type of endorsements one almost comes to expect. As a journal for the dealer trade, we know full well just how hard, and indeed how smart, our readers have had to work - especially under all the well-documented issues that have been faced recently. So to hear tributes such as these again this year, is somehow even more delightful.

The winners of the Awards will be revealed 'Oscars-style' in just a few short weeks' time on the night of November 24th at the gala ceremony, following on from the day's Conference.

I do hope as many of our dealer readers as possible are signed up to attend to the event because as well as it being a fabulous excuse to get together and celebrate another hard-fought year at the awards ceremony - during the day, inspiration will most certainly be on the cards.

ACQUISITION COMPLETED
Dealer takeover finalised

Charlie Glenister and Adrian Hewis

Move expands the dealership’s territory westwards and marks a significant investment.

JCB dealer Oliver Landpower Ltd has completed its acquisition of neighbouring machinery dealership LQG Agri Ltd.

MD Charlie Glenister and sales director, Adrian Hewis

First reported in Service Dealer last month, the deal expands the company’s territory westwards into Warwickshire and marks a significant investment in the JCB Agriculture franchise. It also adds a fourth branch to Oliver Landpower’s sales, parts and service network, with the dedicated JCB location at Upper Quinton - now operating as Oliver Landpower Stratford - joining branches at Tingewick, Buckinghamshire; Luton, Bedfordshire; and Kings Langley, Hertfordshire.

Charlie Glenister, managing director, Oliver Landpower, said, “We’re delighted to have successfully completed the acquisition of this long-established and successful dealership, which expands our business and ensures continued support for JCB customers in the area from an experienced team.”

All LQG Agri employees have transferred to Oliver Landpower, so customers will find the same familiar faces at the branch, including Sue Cook in the office, Stuart Wyles and Clive Ellard in sales; service and commercial manager Mark Baylis and his team of experienced technicians; and Martin Young, who has a wealth of knowledge having managed the parts operation there for many years.

John Smith, managing director, JCB Agriculture, said, “We’re delighted that the proposed agreement between LQG Agri owners the Lockwood family and Oliver Landpower has been completed quickly, ensuring a smooth and seamless transition with continued customer service and support.

“We thank Geoff Lockwood and his team for many years of support to JCB customers and wish him a very happy retirement. Oliver Landpower’s considerable scale and JCB experience, product knowledge and renowned customer service will further strengthen the existing team at Upper Quinton.”

Having extended westwards with the Stratford branch, Oliver Landpower operations will expand eastwards when it takes over JCB’s Essex territory at the beginning of 2023 from a site in Colchester.

PSD Groundscare have announced a new partnership with a Japanese manufacturer of brushcutting solutions.

PSD Groundscare have announced a new partnership with Canycom, the Japanese manufacturer of brushcutting solutions.

L-R: Yoshimitsu Kaneyuki, Canycom president and Chris Gibson, PSD managing director

Founded in 1955, Chikusui Canycom Inc has progressed from a specialist in farm tools into a wide range of product categories̶, from agriculture and forestry to brush mowing and construction̶, supplying machinery to many different countries across the world.

PSD say Canycom Brushcutters are designed to work in tough conditions, clearing long grass, bushes, weeds, bracken, and brambles in a variety of sites. The machines benefit from AWD to enable ease in operation and manoeuvrability.

The new range of machinery is set to be unveiled to the industry at SALTEX next week on the 2nd & 3rd November on PSD Groundscare’s stand (E081) which they say is bigger than ever.

PSD managing director Chris Gibson said, “We’re extremely excited to add Canycom to our portfolio and to be at the forefront in the UK distribution of this fantastic product line and we look forward to showcasing them at this year’s Saltex. The capabilities of the Canycom range of ride-on brushcutters is outstanding and we can’t wait to get out and about offering demonstrations to customers.”

Canycom President Yoshimitsu Kaneyuki said, “We are truly delighted to start this new partnership with PSD Groundscare. We hope to expand our presence in the UK and explore new markets. Together with PSD, we will work hard to give our best to satisfy our customers. We are committed to building trustful, strong, and long-lasting business relationships.”

Overall Dealer of the Year

Five machinery dealers from across the UK have been honoured with this year’s prizes.

Five machinery dealers from across the UK have been honoured with this year’s Krone Dealer Awards.

George Marshall Tractors

Taking the title of overall Dealer of the Year was Scottish business, George Marshall Tractors.

Krone UK managing director, Marcus Oliver, explains that the award was judged on the dealer’s overall commitment to the brand, product representation across the range, aftersales care, parts stocking and business development.

“George Marshall Tractors joined the Krone family in 2020 and have since embraced all aspects of the brand, successfully transitioning into selling the full product range,” he says.

“The team has shown a high level of commitment to demonstrations and increasing brand visibility in the area. The sales and management teams have an excellent willingness to learn about the machines and find new opportunities to enhance their exposure."

Among the winners, Carr’s Billington was awarded for Sales Dealer of the Year.

“Carr’s has excelled in out of season stocking, while continuing to open new branches in the northern territory, following rapid sales growth,” says Mr Oliver.

Krone also recognised Lincolnshire based JPM Agricultural Ltd with the New Dealer of the Year Award, for its success in making it into the top ten dealers for turnover in their first full year of supplying Krone products.

“JPM rapidly integrated the product range into its portfolio, embracing the BiG X forager and BiG Pack square baler in particular. The team has also taken warranty on in house and managed several larges trade ins.”

The award for Service Dealer of the Year was presented to Compass Tractors Ltd in the South West.

Mr Oliver explains that the Compass team has demonstrated a strong focus on staff training and development with a consistently high commitment to service and aftersales care.

Finally, the Ambassador of the Year Award was presented in memory of Krone employees, Rodney Benson and Darren Metcalf, who both sadly lost their battles with cancer earlier this year.

“This year’s award was presented to Tim Adcock from Chelmsford’s Adcock Agri Ltd, who has displayed an infectious ‘can do’ attitude, which cascades and manifests itself throughout his team and truly works in partnership with Krone, in a flexible but driven manner,” says Mr Oliver.

“It’s been another fantastic year for Krone, and we’re immensely pleased with how our dealer network have performed, despite the challenges we’ve faced with supply and logistics.”

SDF TAKE MAJORITY SHARE IN ROBOTICS COMPANY
Controlling interest in start-up

SDF have bought a majority share in a robotics company

Manufacturer says the agreement will enable them to meet the challenges of tomorrow's agriculture.

SDF has announced they are taking a majority stake in VitiBot, the French specialist in robotics for the vineyard care market.

They say the two companies will join forces to develop and market a range of solutions for a new increasingly sustainable precision viticulture.

VitiBot is a French startup based in Reims that was founded in 2016. SDF describe the company as a leader in the emerging market of vineyard care robotics with Bakus, a 100% electric and autonomous straddle tractor.

Cédric BACHE, CEO of VitiBot said, "“We are delighted with this agreement, which will enable us to meet the challenges of tomorrow's agriculture, the genesis of our project."

Lodovico Bussolati, CEO of SDF added, "Sustainable and digital agriculture is a key factor of our development. After some thorough searching, we realised that VitiBot is the best vineyard solution to enrich our tractor offering with self-driving and zero-emission electric vehicles.

"Now the goal is to support development of the company and the product, satisfying a market with huge growth potential."

SDF say within their structure, Vitibot - like the group’s other subsidiaries - will retain full autonomy in terms of technical, industrial and commercial development.

BEng (Hons) Agricultural Engineering graduate George Smith, 24, from Kidlington in Oxfordshire, was awarded the 2022 New Holland Agriculture Best BEng Hons Agricultural Engineering Student trophy.

New Holland Agriculture awards the prize each year to a Harper Adams graduate who has proven his or herself to be an outstanding student whilst completing the BEng Agricultural Engineering course.

New Holland harvester area sales manager Steve Belcher presented George with his prize at the Harper Adams Graduation ceremony earlier this Autumn.

Senior engineering lecturer at Harper Adams, Graham Higginson said, “The New Holland Agriculture Trophy marks exemplary academic achievement. This is based on the student’s whole academic performance across their modules, as well as their final year Honours Research Project.

“George achieved outstanding marks across the suite of modules studied and securing the New Holland Agriculture Trophy recognises his performance not only in his academic studies, but also his wider success - such as the development of products which are currently available across Europe during his placement year with a manufacturer of agricultural and industrial materials.

“The award of the New Holland Agriculture Trophy reinforces the close working relationship between Harper Adams University and New Holland, who are a major employer of Harper Adams University placement students as well as graduates.

Pat Smith, UK & ROI business director for New Holland Agriculture said, “New Holland Agriculture congratulates George Smith on his well-deserved engineering award win. We are proud to support Harper Adams University who are successfully educating the agricultural ambassadors of the future.”

HART COMMON GOLF CLUB ENJOYS MARKET-LEADING RESULTS
With the new Husqvarna CEORA™

Husqvarna – CEORA™

Hart Common Golf Club, one of the top-rated golf courses in the North West, has been enjoying the benefits of advanced robotic solutions following the installation of the newest professional robotic mower from Husqvarna – CEORA™.

Hart Common Golf Club, one of the top-rated golf courses in the North West, has been enjoying the benefits of advanced robotic solutions following the installation of the newest professional robotic mower from Husqvarna - CEORA™.

They club was one of the first to put the new technology to the test, introducing their first CEORA™ robotic lawnmower onto the fairways in June. After experiencing the market-leading mowing results for themselves, the golf club has just invested in a second CEORA™ to further increase productivity.

Here, Catherine Roberts, Head of Greenkeeping, details how CEORA™ has benefited the business.

How did you hear about Husqvarna robotics and what made you consider it for your golf club?

“We had heard about Husqvarna robotics in the residential market and how the technology was being used to revolutionise lawn care in private gardens. When investigating the professional market, we were hesitant to explore robotics due to the restrictive and complicated nature of boundary wires but as soon as we heard about CEORA™ and its pioneering EPOS technology, we knew this was something we needed to try out and explore how it could support our business.

“We saw a demo of the product in person and were instantly convinced. We then placed an order with our local authorised Husqvarna dealer, Chelford Farm Supplies, where the team was fantastic in organising the installation – a very quick process and we were supported throughout, with regular communication to make sure everything was running smoothly.”

What is your initial experience of CEORA™?

“We have been very impressed with CEORA™ so far, from the simple setup to the fantastic results that we have seen already. Following the installation in June, CEORA™ has taken care of everything on the course and has proved invaluable as a solution to save team time and to decrease workload so our greenkeepers can focus on more rewarding tasks. We have the robotic mower currently operating across four holes on the course in the early mornings and evenings. It is able to cut our largest fairway in two and a half hours which is quick for a machine of that size on such a large area. This saves our greenkeepers from having to go and cut manually, which ultimately saves us time.

“The blades are also easy to swap meaning that there is little to no downtime for the mower and that our fairways are always maintained. CEORA™ is brilliant for all-year-round cutting, with the capability of offering a standard 20mm cut for the fairways. The cutting height is easily adjusted in the app so the other areas that have been mapped can be cut at different heights. This means that we will never have to worry about the quality of the turf."

Kress are delighted to be returning and exhibiting the new range of innovative technology to everyone attending Saltex 2022 at Birmingham’s NEC, from 2nd - 3rd November on stand A040.

Every now and again, new technology comes along which changes the future. Kress’s new CyberSystem is truly a game changer.

Offering the world’s fastest battery charge - Zero-to-100 in under eight minutes. Blazingly fast.

Kress Commercial batteries supply up to 3.5 kW to the brushless motor, which in turn delivers 90% of it as output power. That’s 3.2 kW or 4.3 HP, the same as a commercial-grade 64 cc. 2-stroke engine. Power on an unprecedented scale.

With 5.7 kWh of energy, the 8-minute CyberSystem DC-DC charger stores enough juice for all your tools for the whole day. Refill it after work by plugging it in, in your garage, and you'll never have to stop at a fuel station to fill a tank with fossil fuel again.

Furthermore at SALTEX, we will be showcasing our brand new Kress boundary free RTKn robot mowers.

The future of unmanned mowing is now. The new Kress RTKn robot mowers extend unmanned mowing to larger areas, and efficiently operate in parallel lines and autonomously move from one area to another, as if they were driven by humans. No need for boundary wires, nor on-site aerials.

They offer a quick setup, zero emissions, quiet operation, efficiency and operational savings. No labour costs, negligible impact on your energy bill, minimal maintenance expense as compared to ICE mowers.

Perfect for larger residential lawns for which greater availability is required. Large properties. Facilities. Sports fields. Golf courses. Public parks. And numerous other areas. Unmanned mowing is the ideal solution for countless applications, providing quiet, emission-free turf management, with an operating cost that is a fraction of manned mowing.

We look forward to seeing you all at SALTEX.

With over 400 brands showcasing products in three halls, across two days, at one location, SALTEX is a must-attend event for everybody operating in, or supplying to, the groundscare sector.

At SALTEX you can:

  • Listen and learn from industry thought leaders

  • Get expert advice on your specific turf challenges
  • Network with national and international peers
  • Celebrate achievements at the GMA Industry Awards

What’s On?

In addition to learning about new products, services, and suppliers to the industry from home and abroad, SALTEX also has an extensive programme of events and learning opportunities.

Learning LIVE

The Learning LIVE schedule this year has been extended to over 30 sessions, with additional papers attacking the key issues for the grounds care industry of pay, career development, recruitment and retention, how to negotiate in the workplace and how to find out about the millions of pounds of grant funding available from sports clubs. But what’s at the heart of Learning LIVE and this year’s show is sustainability and the environment.

Those managing and maintaining sports turf and green spaces are already having to deal with the impact of climate change and industry suppliers are doing their best to innovate and help grounds people minimise the impact of droughts and floods. The session on reducing the impact of future water restrictions on golf and sports turf, for example, with Owen Turpin from the Environment Agency, Tony Hanson from Environmental Solutions International and Robin Price from Anglian Water discussing the water charter and how to deal with it will provide valuable practical advice.

There’s something for most sports surfaces from some of the best in the business. For rugby, Catherine Hall (Premiership Rugby), Dr David James (Labosport) and Dan Prest (GMA) talk about raising Premiership Rugby pitch standards. For cricket, Gary Barwell (Edgbaston Stadium), Karl McDermott (Lord's) and Steve Birks (Nottinghamshire CCC) discuss how new cricket formats impact on the modern-day grounds manager. Tennis is covered off by Neil Stubley (Wimbledon) who presents the All England Tennis and Croquet Club’s court expansion project.

But all top-level surfaces start somewhere – at grassroots level – and Rob Sullivan presents the Football Foundation's strategic ambitions to improve grass pitch quality and Chris Smith tackles the funding process to improve pitches. Perhaps there’s a role for hybrid pitches in the community – Dr Richard Earl (TGMS) reveals data findings from the Sport England hybrid pitch pilot for community use in London’s Regents Park.

The full seminar line up is available online at saltex.org.uk, but whether it’s elite sports grounds attendees are interested in or a strategy for grassroots football, Learning LIVE has it covered and provides the opportunity to build knowledge and stay ahead of the game.

Eco Village

The whole concept of the Eco Village is to showcase sustainable and environmentally-friendly practices in grounds care and consider what is a sustainable piece of machinery – what’s the impact on the environment and how does it help achieve neutrality? The Eco Village features a programme of daily demonstrations of cutting-edge sustainable technology, offering visitors an opportunity of seeing several products in action. Plus, industry experts will offer advice on green technology and how it could benefit current working practices.

GMA Industry Awards

The GMA Industry Awards hosted by the BBC’s Mark Clemmit, are back for the 12th year. It’s so important to celebrate the achievements of individuals and teams operating in grounds management and is key to positive workforce development. With 18 awards and an evening to celebrate everyone nominated, it’s a ringing endorsement to the good work and talented people in the industry. Tickets to the event can be purchased at saltex.org.uk

So, whether working in educational establishments, community facilities, on private estates, or in sports clubs at grassroot, amateur, or professional level, if you’re passionate about keeping green spaces and playing surfaces safe, accessible, and sustainable, and you’re keen to stay ahead of the game in the grounds care industry, then SALTEX is the show for you. Register for your free ticket here

“In 2021, there was a buzz and real enthusiasm for business: deals were being struck, demos were being organised, there were lots of new launches across the halls and I expect more of the same in 2022.” Geoff Webb, CEO for GMA, SALTEX organisers.
