NOT JUST A BUZZWORD
Resilience for dealerships is a necessity
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs
Resilience is a quality that dealers require to successfully navigate each and every season.
Firstly today, a couple of congratulations are in order on a pair of well-earned retirement announcements.
We feature stories today of Bob Crawford who is stepping back from the dealership that he founded some 35 years ago - and also of our dear friend Chris Biddle who (this time!) is retiring from producing his podcast that he began back in lockdown.
All the best wishes to both from all us here at Service Dealer, for a long, happy and stress-free retirement.
Of course, for industry legends like Bob and Chris to have enjoyed such long and successful careers in this sector, there are a multitude of traits that they will have had to master. Words like adaptability, integrity and expertise spring immediately to mind. But there's another that surely everyone who is reading this today will recognise as essential. And that's resilience. Which, coincidentally, has just been announced as the theme for December's Service Dealer Conference (I know right, smooth!).
It's always an exciting time for us here at Service Dealer when we can begin to share with you all, the work that has been going on behind-the-scenes to prepare for our Conference. Work that begins pretty much immediately after the chairs are put away at the previous event. As ever, the organising team listens to what our dealer delegates want from your conference and a full programme of expert speakers and seminar sessions are put together off of the back of that.
This year's topic feels particularly timely and on-point for this season. As Service Dealer owner Duncan Murray-Clarke says today, "We felt that 'resilience' sums up what is needed right now in a world of challenge and above all, uncertainty. Our program of events is designed to help physically, mentally and strategically."
Duncan is right when he talks about uncertainty pervading the network. It's an idea that has been repeated to us many times, from all different quarters, so far this year. So when we're in the midst of season like this, resilience isn’t just a buzzword – it becomes an absolute necessity.
The dealer network is, of course, renowned for its ability to dig in, adapt and keep moving forward. However, we can all do with some help and advice when times are particularly tough. Our conference will assert that resilience is a skill that can be honed, improved and nurtured. Our expert speakers and the specially curated seminar sessions will offer advice, tips and encouragement that can be taken back to the dealership and put into practice.
Resilience is about more than simply surviving tough times, though. Doing some reading around the concept in a business context, experts seem to say that it means being prepared for this uncertainty, making smart decisions under pressure, and finding ways to adapt, innovate and even thrive when the odds are stacked against you.
The past few years have seen disruption hit the network in waves. Brexit, Covid, supply chain issues - all have required the utmost resilience from dealers. Also we have seen huge disruption in routes to market, in the technology that dealers supply and in the changing of weather patterns.
It seems fair to say that a business best placed to cope with these myriad of assaults, will be one that has built resilience into all that they do. Their systems and processes require preparation, as do, crucially, their teams. Hopefully a trip to the Service Dealer Conference this December 4th, will aid you in your quest to do just that.
Also, I would argue that a fundamental element of resilience is in a sense of community. Of coming together to share knowledge, experience and expertise with friends and peers. Which is an opportunity that the Conference affords in bucketloads!
See you there!

THEME CONFIRMED FOR SERVICE DEALER'S 2025 CONFERENCE
Taking place in December
Organisers say that this year's Conference is designed to help dealers "physically, mentally and strategically."
Work is continuing apace behind the scenes to make this year's Service Dealer Conference and Awards one to remember!

Today, organisers are delighted to confirm that the theme for this year's edition is Resilience. Subtitled Tactics to thrive in turbulent times, resilience for dealerships isn't luck - it's a skill that can be honed, improved and nurtured. The conference this year will offer a specifically curated programme for our dealer delegates, that will impart expert knowledge on this most timely of topics.
Service Dealer owner, Duncan Murray-Clarke, explained. "We felt that 'resilience' sums up what is needed right now in a world of challenge and above all, uncertainty. Our program of events is designed to help physically, mentally and strategically."
Each year, the Service Dealer team takes on board feedback from past events to shape the day around the needs of its delegates - and this year is no different. It’s this careful consideration that has helped position the Service Dealer Conference as the leading event in the sector, drawing dealership owners, managers, and key decision-makers who are keen to stay ahead of the curve and drive business success.

Stuart specialises in tackling important, serious and often overwhelming subjects such as resilience and the climate crisis, via the fresh, engaging and accessible medium of comedy. His TV credits include performing stand up on BBC institution Live at the Apollo and also on Conan, hosted by comedy icon Conan O'Brien.

MLM TAKES OVER
Following change to local dealer's business structure
In our WEB ONLY story MLM say it was a mutual decision between themselves and the previous dealer that led to them taking over the brand.
CHRIS BIDDLE RETIRES (FINALLY!)
Podcast comes to an end
After producing more than 130 episodes, founder of Service Dealer, Chris Biddle, has put his podcast 'to bed'.
Chris Biddle, the founder of Service Dealer writes:

“Last December I announced a pause in my Inside Agri-Turf podcast as Trish and I were about to move from our home of 30 years in Salisbury to Southbourne on the Dorset coast. My intention was to re-start production after a couple of months
However, with the move successfully completed, I have decided to put Inside Agri-Turf ‘to bed’ permanently after an exhilarating and satisfying five years producing more than 130 episodes for the land-based engineering community.
It brings to an end my direct involvement with this wonderful industry. More than 60 years that have been, always challenging, never dull, constantly evolving, endlessly fascinating - with a cast of the most talented and innovative folk you will find in any industry.
It all started for me in 1962 as a demonstrator for Ford Tractors, and progressed through management for an ag and grass machinery dealership. Then a change of gear, founding Service Dealer and TurfPro magazines in 1988, before passing the baton to Duncan Murray-Clarke who has taken the publication and events to new heights, supported by the ever-present editor Steve Gibbs, who joined me in 2001 fresh out of uni - with a degree in film studies!
I've been extremely fortunate to have enjoyed excellent relationships with the industry bodies. BAGMA where I was President-elect ‘back in the day’ (but couldn’t take up the post because my dealership had just acquired another company); with the AEA to whom I extend heartiest congratulations on its remarkable 150th Anniversary this year, and as a Fellow of IAgrE, for whom I produced its house journal, Landwards, for 12 years.
There are so many memories, experiences, highs and lows, all underpinned by enduring friendships. Hardly any of it was planned. Careers in this industry evolve. Doors are constantly opening as technology drives new opportunities. But now is the time to totally switch off.
Today, my ‘local’ is Sobo Beach, just 100 yards from our new home, a laid-back bar and eatery on Southbourne beach, recently voted one of the best in the UK.
And guess what? One of the first dealer profiles I wrote for Service Dealer in the 1980s featured Christchurch Power Tools. I was back in that very same showroom recently, buying a ride-on. Not a grass cutter, but a mobility scooter to help with my pesky spinal issues. The premises is now occupied by a specialist in these aids – whilst Christchurch Garden Machinery, opened by Chad Hayes of Longham Mowers, occupies a smart showroom on the same site.
So, what goes round . . . Many thanks to everyone who listened to, guested or collaborated with my Inside Agri-Turf podcast - and best wishes to everyone involved in an industry which has dominated my life for so many years.
Judging by the pictures and stories in the media, online, and across social media of smiling, enthusiastic young people who have ‘got the message’ about the opportunities offered in land-based engineering, the industry is well equipped to meet the challenges of the future”
Ciao
Chris
All the episodes of Inside Agri-Turf will be live until the end of July this year.

After 45 years
Heartfelt thanks offered for Bob Crawford's years of dedication, vision, and support.
Crawfords Group have announced the retirement of its founder and chairman, Bob Crawford.

Bob Crawford
Originally known as R W Crawford Agricultural Machinery Ltd., the dealership was founded by Bob in October 1980, initially focused on the buying and selling of used farm machinery in Essex. Over the years, the business has grown into Crawfords Group - a multi-branch business specialising in the sales, servicing, and parts support of machinery and 4×4 vehicles across the South and South East of England.
Wes Crawford, managing director, said, "On behalf of the Crawford family and the entire Crawfords team, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to my father for his years of dedication, vision, and support. Bob’s leadership has shaped the culture of the business from day one - grounded in passion, trust, family and respect. With a strong customer focus, and a genuine passion for the land-based sectors that we serve. His mentorship has left a lasting legacy that will continue to guide the business for years to come."
Bob added, “What started as a small venture from a yard in Essex has grown into something I’m incredibly proud of. Crawfords has always been more than just a business to me - it’s been a family, a team, and a way of life. I’m grateful to everyone who’s been part of the journey, past and present, from loyal customers and suppliers to the dedicated team who continue to drive the business forward. It’s now time for me to step back, knowing the company is in safe hands with a bright future.”
Bob plans to have his last day within the business on Friday 11th July.

LAWN MOWER RACING ADDED TO LINE-UP
At upcoming trade event
Taking place across both days of the event, organisers describe it as one of their boldest and most exhilarating attractions yet.

Taking place across both days of the event, this professionally run spectacle will feature specially modified racing mowers, stripped of their blades but supercharged with "adrenaline, skill, and competitive spirit." It is promised that elite riders will be battling it out on a custom-built track in front of a live crowd.

In a a statement the show's organisers said, "GroundsFest visitors will get to see a range of lawn mower brands in action, used and pushed to their limits by the pros. SHOW & MOW EVENT HELD
Dealership invites greenkeepers
Greenkeeper customers were invited to learn more about a new electric product range and drive it for themselves.
Turney Groundcare, Bicester, recently hosted a Jacobsen Electrification Show & Mow event at Kirtlington Golf Course, Oxfordshire, for their greenkeeper customers to learn more about the manufacturer's new electric product range and drive it for themselves.

Turney Group’s expanded sales territory extends to the South and West of their existing area of responsibility, encompassing many more golf courses, which they say further strengthens their long-established partnership with Ransomes Jacobsen.
The day started with an opportunity for the delegates and Turney sales team to catch up over a bacon sandwich, compare experiences of the current woefully low-rainfall conditions, and consider what they would like to gain from the day. Much of the initial feedback made clear that customers are considering the benefits of battery machines and may not have had the chance to see them for themselves yet.
Jacobsen’s product trainer Rob Hayward led a presentation on the history and varied portfolio of the Textron business, Jacobsen’s parent company, followed by greater detail on individual machines. The lineup of demonstration machines included the Eclipse 360 Elite, SLF1 Elite, Aurora Elite, and the Cushman Hauler Pro X Elite.
Steve Lloyd, course manager at The Worcestershire Golf Club, remarked that it was helpful to have somebody at the event who could offer in-depth knowledge of the machines and the research that goes into the development process.

Peter Chaloner, Managing Director of Cobra Garden, highlights the significance of the VX range:
“We know that UK gardeners deal with some of the toughest grass conditions in Europe. The VX range has been meticulously designed to tackle these challenges head-on. With our new VorteX airflow deck and high-torque DG500 and DG650 engines, these mowers deliver outstanding performance, even in damp and dense grass. Whether for homeowners or professionals, the VX range offers the reliability and cutting efficiency that our customers expect.”
Innovation That Delivers on Performance
With the VX range, Cobra Garden continues to push boundaries in garden machinery innovation, providing powerful, efficient, and durable solutions for modern mowing challenges.
