THE countryside will come to the city centre in September as Cardiff Council stages a brand new event that will showcase the essence of rural Wales and celebrate the best of farming, food and the countryside from across the UK.

The show to be staged at Cardiff Castle on 28 and 29th September will include such highlights as a tented CheeseVillage, Best of British produce tent, livestock displays with some of the winners from the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show, The Cardiff Arms Pub and masterclasses in skills such as butchery, bread making, bee keeping and cheese making.

Key players in the agricultural community, The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, the Farmers Union of Wales and NFU Cymru have agreed to support the event and have a presence, reinforcing the benefit bringing countryside and urban living together.

NFU Cymru director, Mary James said that people across the UK were becoming increasingly interested in where their food came from.

“The Cardiff Country Fair is a progressive step by a local authority to celebrate the countryside and help answer the hugely important question of food provenance.” FUW president, Emyr Jones, said the event would help promote a closer understanding between food producers and consumers.

There will also be fun and games for all the family to take part in like cheese skittles, tug of war and the Daffodil Rebuild team who can teach you how to put an entire tractor together in record time!

There will be a comprehensive demonstration and entertainment programme featuring music, farriery, stick making, learning how to fly fish and shows from The Quack Pack ensuring a fantastic day out for visitors of all ages.

This innovative event is the first of its kind to bring agriculture right to the heart of the city. The fair will take place every other year alternating with the Great British Cheese Festival which will be back in September 2014.
