CAN YOU HELP? HORTAG MYSTERY
Can you identify vintage garden tractor

We have been contacted by the Stroud Local History Society to see if any of our readers can identify a mysterious garden tractor company, advertised in a 1953 edition of The Smallholder.

The Museum In the Park in Stroud, close by to where Edwin Budding invented the first lawnmower, was asked by Charlie Moore if they could shed any light on a company called Hortag, from Brimscombe, Gloucestershire. Unfortunatley they could not.

Charlie says, "Until seeing an advert in The Smallholder magazine dated 26th June 1953, I had not heard of the company. My research so far has found a spade, similar to the Wolf Terrex, with the name Hortag on it and a growing medium with the Hortag name on it.

"I have also tried the Gloucestershire Society for Industrial Archaeology, they could not find anything.

"The advert is interesting as they use the name Bulldog for their machine. Howard produced a similar machine with the Bulldog name but had to change it after legal action by Lanz tractors of Germany who were using the Bulldog name for their tractors."

If any of our readers know anything about this company please post a comment below this article and we'll make sure it's passed on to Charlie and the Stroud Local History Society.
