ARE YOU MOVEMBER- ING? A number of industry initiatives under way
It’s the month of the year that sees men across the country set down their razors and sprout a top-lip tache in support of men’s health charities - and a number of industry charity initiatves are already underway.
William Gilbert and his father John, of British Seed Houses Limited (BSH), have gone back to ‘grassroots’ to show the company’s support for Movember, the men’s health charity – growing the world’s largest ‘mowstache’ in the form of a giant grass ‘Mo’ in a field near Wedmore, Somerset. The giant ‘Mo’ is around 120ft wide and 40ft across and is a larger-than-life version of the logo used by the charity.
It was a really family affair, with John sowing the seed of the idea and William and his team bringing it to life on Somerset farmer and BSH Southern Counties area technical representive Andrew Cook’s land.
BSH with headquarters in Witham St Hughs, Lincolnshire, has also pledged £1,000 towards the cause for which men are encouraged to grow a moustache throughout the month of November. It is also urging customers and others to grow a ‘Mo’ with the incentive of the owner of the best moustache submitting ‘before and after’ photographs winning a trip to New York.
William Gilbert, managing director of BSH, said: “When Dad said it would be fun to do something on a giant scale to highlight BSH’s commitment to Movember, we all jumped at the chance. “We began with a scale drawing and then marked the area out with fencing stakes in a field where Andrew was growing grass for silage. We then mowed it into shape using an agricultural mower and did the final trimming with a strimmer. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked out”
“With so many men working in our industry Movember is an ideal cause for us to get involved with, especially as men’s health issues often get ignored. All the male colleagues here will be taking part and we hope our customers will too.” Further details can be found on www.britishseedhouses.com and www.bshamenity.com.
ALSO entering into the spirit of the event is former Service Dealer sub-editor, Steve Gibbs, who now runs his own freelance design operation. His aim is to emulate his ‘idol’ Burt Reynolds. You can view Steve’s charity page.
