G J Handy & Co Ltd was founded in 1938, it was set up by Geoffrey Handy. At first it was just an Ironmonger in The Old Town area of Swindon, they ventured into hardware, bottled gas and lawnmowers as the business prospered. Later the company began specialising in garden machinery, moving in 1973 to the site of its current retail business, on what was then the Kennedy’s garden centre site in Hyde Road, Swindon.

Derek took the business over in 1970, the independent trade was then and still remains today at the heart of the business, with Simon still very confident about the future of the independent retailer.

In 2008 a new company structure was introduced, which saw Derek Belcher become Chairman, With his son Simon Belcher running the company on a day to day basis as Managing Director, Steve Bartlett was appointed to the position of Operations & Purchasing Director. Since the restructure the Handy Distribution part of the business has continued to evolve.
