Well that was a surprise.
I personally did not see a Brexit happening. I bought the line that if turnout was high all those 'undecideds' would vote for the status quo, not for the radical option.
But it's happened now. So the question for us is what might it mean for our industry? I guess the simple answer is no one knows for sure - this is unprecedented.
Talking to industry figures over the past few months the impression I have certainly picked up is that in terms of their business, most didn't mind either way. Obviously individuals have their own strong personal opinions, as we saw in our Service Dealer survey on the matter - but in terms of the result having a direct effect on the outdoor powered machinery industry, most didn't believe that it would.
The prevailing opinion is that there is one major factor which always has the greatest effect on our industry and it's something none of us can vote for - the weather.
This was illustrated very clearly to me again this week when I visited Handy Distribution's impressive new premises in Swindon. Orders were flying out of their doors with everyone rushed off their feet. But they were telling me how the season had started very late this year. It didn't really kick off in earnest until the beginning of May.
However now it's warm and raining, the grass is growing like nobody's business and people need to cut it. So mowers are currently in great demand. But also the hedges are growing, so hedgecutters are being sold. And even though there's been a lot rain lately, in those periods of warmth between the downpours, people are wanting to water their gardens, so watering equipment is selling.
MD Simon Belcher told me, "In a normal season we would get a stagger in these peaks of demand for the different equipment, however this year they have all come together."
And one would presume that this morning these levels of demand for mowers, hedgecutters and watering equipment hasn't changed because we are no longer a member of the European Union.
So hopefully, as much as it can be amongst all this national uncertainty, it should be business as usual for our industry.
What do you think though? Please leave a comment and let us know your opinion.
