NATIONAL GARDENING SHOW CANCELLED Two shows cancelled at Bath & West Showground
Two shows have been cancelled in the 2013 season at the Bath and West Showground, near Shepton Mallet.
The 17th Motorhome Show which was due to open tomorrow and run until Sunday will not now take place, and the National Gardening Show, which usually takes place in late August has also been cancelled.
The National Gardening Show is one of the Royal Bath and West Society's own shows and has been held at the showground for almost 20 years.
Alan Lions, show manager, said there are a number of reasons for the decision to cancel this year. "We are just not able to get enough sponsorship and backing for the show and we are very much reliant on good weather," he said. "For the last couple of years the show has struggled and there is a lot of competition in the area now. I can think of four other good events that are on at the same time as the National Garden Show. It's very difficult.
"We know a lot of people are very fond of the show but it has had a really good run and all good things come to an end."
Mr Lions said he did not know whether the event was likely to return in 2014 but said the society would now concentrate on its other major shows. "We are very sad that the gardening show has gone but we are very happy with the remaining shows we put on. We are very busy here, with the Agricultural Machinery and Equipment Show taking place in February and of course we are working on the 150th Royal Bath and West Show coming up at the end of May. There's also our big Dairy Show in October.
"Most other show societies deliver just one show a year, so we are doing very well."
