Demands on dealer time this month
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs

Steve Gibbs

With a busy month ahead, including GroundsFest next week, are you able to balance your time between the dealership and industry events?

With the change in the weather, it well and truly feels like we have rapidly clicked over from summer into autumn.

As September is now showing on the calendar, dealers across the country will know what that month means for their schedule - even greater demands on their time! And as we know, many of those demands will be asking for hours and days away from the dealership - with local shows, manufacturer dealer days and national trade events all taking place this month.

The first of the major exhibitions that will be of interest to many of our dealer readers kicks off this coming Tuesday (September 9th) at Stoneleigh Park with the third staging of GroundsFest. For the first time this year, Service Dealer and our sister title TurfPro, will have a stand at the show (42A). The whole team will be there for both days, so please do come along and say hi. It'll be great to see as many of our readers as possible.

My colleague Laurence Gale who is the editor of TurfPro and whom many of you will know from his visits to dealerships around the country for his articles in Service Dealer magazine, has been invited to share his expertise on a panel on the first day of the show. At 11am on Tuesday, Loz along with several other turf industry luminaries, will be talking about the issues of recruitment and retention in the professional end-user sector. I'm sure many of our dealer readers who specialise in commercial machinery will be fascinated to hear the group's thoughts on these issues that will clearly have a direct impact on their businesses - and indeed I'm sure there will be parallels to be drawn to the staffing crisis in the dealer sector itself.

My feeling ahead of the show is that there is likely to be more dealers in attendance than ever before. The event has clearly built significant momentum ahead of next week -  from its previous editions, from its newly launched academy events and from its year-round online presence. It genuinely feels like it has some buzz surrounding it this year.

Also, greatly aiding my expectation of serious dealer numbers is the fact that several major manufacturer suppliers have chosen to hold get-togethers for their partners at GroundsFest. Companies like STIGA and Toro UK for example, clearly have sizeable networks. If a decent proportion of just those turn up, there truly will be quite the gathering of specialists on site. If this happens I'm sure the show organisers themselves would be delighted, but it would be equally good news for all the other machinery exhibitors who may be looking for quality dealerships to expand the reach for their products.

One of the principal draws of GroundsFest is, of course, the fact that a sizable chunk of the exhibition takes place outside in a large demonstration area. Now, I'm not saying the show lives or dies on the weather - because we're all hardy-types in this sector - but it is undeniably better if it doesn't rain! As someone who camped at a music festival last weekend in an absolute deluge, I can very much attest to this! My advice from looking at the mixed forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday? Bring a jacket with you that is actually waterproof - not water resistant! These are very much different beasts - as I discovered to my own chagrin.

So, if you are attending next week, let us know in the comments below. Also, do tell us if you have had to make special provisions for your time away from the dealership?

Equally, it'll be of interest to hear if anyone feels they can't make it because time and/or resources are simply too tight? We know that many of our dealer readers run lean operations, so it's understandable that even being away for a single day could seem disproportionately impactful.

But for those that are able to visit this - or any industry event - I do subscribe to the theory that return on investment comes not in instant sales, but in an expansion of knowledge, in making and nurturing vital connections, and in future readiness.

Major manufacturer announces this week they are "moving quickly to appoint new dealers for these strategically important counties".

Dealership says opportunity to grow with a family-owned, engineering-led manufacturer aligns perfectly with their values.

Merlo has announced the appointment of Henton & Chattell Ltd as an authorised dealer, effective 1st September 2025.

Peter Chaloner, managing director, Henton and Chattell and Craig Footman, regional sales manager, Merlo UK

The Nottingham-based company will represent the brand across the Midlands and East Midlands, operating from newly acquired premises in Newark, Nottinghamshire, formerly occupied by Farmstar.

“We’re delighted to welcome Henton & Chattell to the Merlo agricultural network,” commented Owen Buttle, national sales manager at Merlo UK. “Their strong infrastructure and customer base, and proven ability to deliver across both professional ground care and agricultural sectors make them a natural fit for our brand."

Peter Chaloner, managing director at Henton & Chattell, added, “Our team is excited to expand our offering and support our customers with Merlo’s premium range of telehandlers. The opportunity to grow with a family-owned, engineering-led manufacturer like Merlo aligns perfectly with our values and long-term ambitions.”

NEW UK MD APPOINTED
Will showcase strategic direction at GroundsFest

James Gordon

Attendance at the show next week will also see manufacturer "officially entering the professional market".

STIGA has announced the appointment of James Gordon as its new UK managing director who will be based out of the company's new UK office in Stansted, effective September 15, 2025.

The company says James brings an impressive career of senior leadership in the consumer and B2B sectors, with extensive experience in commercial management from his time in the UK, Australia, Asia, and the USA. He has held key roles at major companies such as Kärcher, Dyson, and Colgate Palmolive, where he was instrumental in "driving market growth and operational efficiency."

Gregory Levacher, Group SVP of sales, said, "We are thrilled to have James join the STIGA team. His leadership and deep understanding of our industry will be a significant asset as we focus on growing and strengthening our market position in the UK."

This news coincides with the company's attendance at GroundsFest 2025, where STIGA say they will be officially entering the professional market - which they describe as a natural extension for a brand with over 90 years of experience and a history of "shifting to electric" in gardening. At its stand OSA790, visitors can attend live demonstrations of new products for professionals, which include a Large Format Robot, the all-electric STIGA ePark Pro front mower, and the new ePowerBattery Pro.

TAKING TIME FOR WHAT MATTERS
And getting it done

Jason Nettle

Jason Nettle, director of Winchester Garden Machinery, updates us on what a tough month August was for his marathon challenge, the industry and him personally.

Jason Nettle, director of Winchester Garden Machinery, is this year undertaking the challenge of 12 marathons in 12 months for good causes. Here he updates us on what a tough month August was for his marathon challenge, the industry and him personally.

Hi everyone,

You might have been thinking I've finally given up on this possibly ill-advised challenge of running a marathon a month. I'll be honest, it's come close - so close, the fact that I'm had to push to get the distance done over the final weekend of last month says it all!

August was a tough one, and the added lack of rain this year has made for one of the most demanding seasons I've ever known in our industry. So, I decided to take some time off. A family holiday had to come first. I packed my trainers with all the good intentions of getting up early and squeezing in some training sessions. You will probably not be surprised to hear I didn't clock up a single training mile. What I did get was some incredibly valuable, quality time with my boys and family, as well as a few extra pounds to carry along on this marathon!

I'm also incredibly grateful to announce that this August's marathon was sponsored by AL-KO Gardentech UK Ltd. Thank you so much for your support!

Last weekend, I plodded along, clocking up the miles on the last day of my holiday. I set off from Ropley, Hampshire and headed down the Meon Valley Trail from West Meon to Fareham and then back again. My final destination? The nearest pub for a well-earned drink. I was literally running for a pint!

Last month, I had to prioritise, and while the marathon was a last-minute push, the reminder of what's truly important -family, and your own well-being - is a lesson worth more than any training run.

My 'why' remains the same. I'm running to raise awareness and vital funds for Cancer Research UK, Prostate Cancer UK, Naomi House Children’s Hospice and St. Michael's Hospice.

Your support fuels this extreme nonsense

I'm pushing my body to its absolute limits for these charities. From trudging through endless mud and braving scorching trails to running with a few extra holiday pounds, I'm going to some pretty ridiculous extremes to get this done. This isn't just about a run; it's about pushing past what I thought was possible to help those in need.

I'm thrilled to share some incredible news: we have already hit my original fundraising target of £10,000! This is a phenomenal effort, and it's all thanks to your generosity. I've now set a new goal of £12,000, and I hope you can all help me work towards this new target.

Please sponsor me today.

Every single pound really does make a difference and helps turn my ridiculous efforts into tangible help for those who truly need it.

I'll be back soon with an update on how I got on with this most-recent marathon push.
