IF THEY STAGE IT, WILL YOU COME?
Dilemma for show organisers, exhibitors & visitors
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs

Steve Gibbs

An online show this week brought it home to me that it's been a year now since I last attended an industry event - but do the masses want to return to in-person gatherings this year?

An online event that I took part in on Wednesday this week, brought it home to me just how long it is that we've been apart from peers and colleagues.

The last industry get together I attended was exactly a year ago now. Before everything came to halt, I visited an exhibition at the Business Design Centre in Islington called the Garden Press Event. For me as an editor, this is a great show. It's not open to the public or the wider trade, rather it's specifically geared towards the specialist gardening press.

Most visitors who would ordinarily come along to the day, write for the gardening pages of newspapers and magazines, or run their own websites, blogs or social media channels dedicated to horticulture. For me representing a trade journal read by dealers of outdoor powered machinery, it has been heartening over the past few editions of the show to see more and more brands familiar to our readers exhibiting. It means that your suppliers are wanting to promote themselves and the machinery that their specialist dealers sell, to journalists that write for outlets that will be read by your customers.

In the years that I have been attending, the show itself has grown in size and I'm confident in saying that March 2020 saw the greatest number of machinery brands yet take a stand. Here in March 2021 of course, the show was unable to take place physically. This week the organisers ran an online version, which fair play to them, was as slickly produced and professionally put together as one could have hoped - however, seemingly as a consequence of being virtual, there were fewer machinery manufacturers than last year taking part.

Throughout the day there were a series of live video presentations by exhibiting companies. Of interest to our sector was Craig Hoare of Hayter / Toro talking about the two brands' latest battery offerings and their sustainability credentials. A very appropriate message to be disseminating to the consumer press.

Hayter / Toro's Criag Hoare presenting at the virtual Garden Press Event this week

As well as this there were roundtable video discussion rooms available where the journalists could chat with representatives from the exhibitors. Each exhibitor also had their own page where they could leave press releases, videos and links to their various channels.

As a virtual trade show experience, I can't see how the organisers could have done more. They created a virtual space that worked, as opposed to the alternative of simply leaving everyone without any Garden Press Event at all this year.

However ... it's just not the same. Nowhere near.

I personally find it so difficult to get into an online event. If I'm sat at my desk, I've inevitably got something else which I could be getting on with. I'll admit the fault could very well lie with me rather than the concept, but I do find it a slog to dedicate my concentration to a virtual exhibition. I can't get over the feeling that I could be finding all this information out at any time, by simply visiting the websites of the exhibiting companies.

If I've travelled to an actual show that's where my focus solely lies for a day or two - and most importantly, I'm having natural interactions with the representatives on the stands and fellow visitors I bump into on my way around. For me, recreating these elements is a real struggle on the internet.

Readers thoughts on 2021 shows

All of which brings us back to the discussions we've been having recently about trade shows in 2021.

We posed a few questions to you our dealer readers a couple of weeks ago, regarding your feelings on the trade show scene this year. You can read the results and a selection of your opinions that clearly illustrate the differences in viewpoints, here.

Perhaps reflective of how wider society might feel as things begin opening up, there appears to be a genuine dichotomy between those who are keen to get on with activities and those with a nervousness about returning to mass interactions.

Indicative of this split, on the key question of if in-person events go ahead this year will you want to attend, whilst there wasn't a completely even spread across the three options, it was certainly close between yes, no and undecided!

Reading through your responses, I must reiterate just how much I do not envy show organisers this year! It is also a very tricky position that manufacturers find themselves in - facing the tough choice as to whether they commit to attending or choose to leave it another year?

From my own point of view, virtual events do their best and have provided something during these times when a physical show simply isn't permitted. But as we move along the government's roadmap and the legal prohibitions are lifted, I think online events directly replacing traditional shows will be found wanting.

But will enough punters be willing to turn up, or sufficient exhibitors commit their money, time and staff to any shows that do choose to open their real-life doors?

As I say, I certainly do not envy these decision makers.

TUCKWELL COMPLETE BURDEN PURCHASE
All employees retained

Dale Burden and James Tuckwell

P Tuckwell Ltd, the John Deere dealer across the East of England, has completed the acquisition of Burden Bros Agri Ltd covering the South East.

P Tuckwell Ltd, the John Deere dealer across the East of England, has completed the acquisition of Burden Bros Agri Ltd covering the South East.

Dale Burden and James Tuckwell

The acquisition, which has been agreed by respective owners James Tuckwell and Dale Burden, will see all employees and the three existing branch locations at Stockbury and Ivychurch in Kent and Framfield in East Sussex retained.

The full terms of the agreement are not being disclosed but it has been announced that this acquisition has the full support and approval of John Deere Ltd and does not involve any other businesses in the BB⁴ Group of Companies.

Burden Bros Agri Ltd was founded in 2007 when it took on the John Deere agricultural franchise for north Kent. Subsequent expansion saw the business take on additional territory in East Sussex, parts of Surrey and the remainder of Kent. The John Deere Turf franchise was added following the acquisition of the Godfreys business for the area.

Tuckwells was established in 1954 and have been John Deere dealers since 1965. Operating from seven locations across Suffolk, Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, the business employs over 200 people. In addition, the business runs Tuckwell Farms, a 1500 acre working farm in Suffolk. Tuckwells were one of the first dealers in the UK to take on the John Deere Turf franchise.

“Dale and his team have built a strong, agricultural and turf business throughout the south east of England since the company began in 2007,” says James Tuckwell. “We are excited to be given this opportunity to expand our business and to build on their success. We welcome the Burden Bros Agri team to the Tuckwell family and look forward to working together with them and their customers.”

“I would like to express our gratitude to Dale and the Burden family for the outstanding job they have done in supporting and growing the John Deere brand in south east England since becoming a dealer nearly 14 years ago,” said John Deere Limited division sales manager Joedy Ibbotson.

“We are delighted that they have reached this agreement with Tuckwells, which ensures the continuity of the Burden Bros team and dealership outlets within the John Deere network. This is a great fit, combining two businesses with closely aligned values based on outstanding customer service with a focus on precision technology and connected support.”

Dale Burden added, “Whilst this is a time of mixed emotions for me and my brothers, we are pleased that a deal has been reached between the Burden and Tuckwell families. We have known each other for many years and I am confident that the business is in safe hands and is well placed to continue its development and growth. I believe there will be many opportunities for the team, and our customers will benefit from the strengths that come from this combined dealership.”

UNIVERSAL DEALER / MANUFACTURER CONTRACTS . .
. . a 'non-starter' says CLIMMAR President

Erik Hogervorst

A universal template for a dealer / manufacturer contract has long been discussed but rejected by suppliers says CLIMMAR President.

A universal template for a dealer / manufacturer contract has been ‘on the agenda’ for many years says Erik Hogervorst, the President of CLIMMAR, the pan-European trade association who represent over 19,000 farm and turfcare machinery sales and service dealers in 16 European countries.

“However, the idea has been completely rejected by manufacturers and by their European trade association, CEMA, and so is a non-starter,” he told Chris Biddle in the latest episode of the Inside Agri-Turf podcast.

Erik is a director of a family owned Dutch dealership holding a Kubota franchises and with specialist divisions in fork lift trucks and spraying equipment, and has been CLIMMAR President for 6 years.

In a wide ranging discussion, he was accompanied by Keith Christian from BAGMA, the UK's representative on CLIMMAR who agreed that "once a dealer has to reach for a contract to check out its terms, its usually too late".

Erik and Keith reflected on issues impacting dealers across Europe including recruitment and training, the handling of data, the future of shows and the looming RMI (Repair and Maintenance Information) legislation allowing dealers access to servicing information for products for which they do not hold a main franchise.

They also said that the UK leaving the EU earlier this year made no difference to its participation in CLIMMAR. The association had been formed long before the EU and included Switzerland, also not a member of the EU.

Reviewing the past year and prospects for year ahead in this COVID-age, Erik said that the farm machinery market in most European countries had held up well during 2020 and prospects for this year ' look encouraging'.

He added that dealers have always taken a long-term approach and are used to 'riding the waves' of external influences on their businesses whether they be weather, the economy - or pandemic.

SPINDRIFT SEEKS SPRAYER STOCKISTS
Plenty of stock and accessories across the Cooper Pegler and Berthoud ranges

Dealers and distributors needing timely deliveries of knapsack and hand sprayers post-Brexit can rest easy.

Dealers and distributors needing timely deliveries of knapsack and hand sprayers post-Brexit can rest easy.

As the sprayer season kicks off across the turf sector this month, specialist wholesaler Spindrift Sprayers is reassuring customers that they have plenty of stock and accessories across the Cooper Pegler and Berthoud ranges.

At the Helme, Trevor and daughter Lily checking sprayer stocks

Trevor Helme runs the business with his wife, Cleone, and their daughter Lily and admits that sprayers certainly float his boat.

“I’ve always enjoyed working with the knapsack market,” he says. “The complexities of spraying a liquid on to turf, or crops, intrigue me.”

Spindrift sells thousands of sprayers annually so potential supply uncertainties surrounding Brexit, then the impact of covid sparked some serious forward planning to ensure continuity for customers.

“Nobody knew what was going to happen,” Trevor recalls. “I travelled to the manufacturer Hozelock-Exel’s headquarters in France, and stressed that we wanted to stock up well before Brexit.

“We ended up with a warehouse chock full of product - and sprayers have been flying out of the door ever since. I like to get our distributors nicely stocked up ready for the new season and we incentivise them with an early spring offer that this year includes extra discount, extended credit and a free Cooper Pegler CP5 when they buy ten of the knapsacks.”

Operator health and safety weigh heavily with Trevor. “Knapsacks usually come with very narrow straps but Hozelock-Exel’s are strong and sturdy and come with waistbands that help shift the weight of the sprayer and its contents from the shoulders to the hips.”

With product users as diverse as councils, contractors, gardeners and sportsgrounds people to consider, securing a solid supply chain is critical, Trevor explains.

“Major product users such as Greensleeves depend on reliable service and back-up so we ensure our distributors have ready access to any of the Cooper Pegler and Berthoud ranges, knapsack or hand sprayers, as well as the full stock of accessories, such as nozzles, trigger assemblies, seals and lances. We aim to supply them within 24 hours.

“Actually, covid and furlough have increased business," Trevor continues, "because during lockdown more homeowners have called in garden care companies to treat their lawns and when an operator is making 15-20 calls a day typically, sprayers and spare parts are in greater demand.”

Spindrift already has many distributors across the UK, but Trevor is eager to expand the network. “I aim to be the biggest sprayer wholesaler in the UK and taking on more distributors can help us achieve that ambition.”

He's also expanded the range of professional sprayers Spindrift wholesales by stocking Hozelock-Exel's Laser Industrie products, which operators use for applying liquids right across the pH range in the construction, automotive, food and hygiene, cleaning and agriculture sectors.
