IS A GREAT PRODUCT ENOUGH?
To maintain dealer loyalty
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs

A comment we received from a dealer reader to last week's survey summed up the idea that it's often the quality of manufacturer support that determines whether a franchise succeeds.

You may remember that last week in this Weekly Update we ran a short survey asking you, our valued dealer readers, a pretty straightforward question: what makes you decide to take on, or walk away from, a franchise?

As always, there were plenty of interesting responses, but one in particular stood out to me because it seemed to sum up something we've heard repeatedly in our conversations with dealers over the years.

The dealer wrote: "First and foremost, the most important aspect is having a good and reliable product - but that alone is not enough. A good product is no good without the back-up and support from the manufacturer to go with it."

I suspect that single sentence will resonate with many independent dealers.

Manufacturers naturally devote huge amounts of time and money to developing new products. Specifications are improved, technologies advanced and marketing campaigns are rolled out. But going by comments like the one above, for the dealer, the product is only one part of the equation.

Once that machine leaves the showroom, a crucial relationship begins.

Can technical questions be answered quickly? Are parts available? Is warranty support fair? Is training readily accessible? Does the company pick up the phone?! When something goes wrong, does the manufacturer work with the dealer to solve the problem, or leave them to deal with an unhappy customer alone?

It sounds like these kinds of considerations make the difference between a successful franchise and one that eventually disappears from the showroom floor.

The same dealer went on to say that they had moved away from brands where the products themselves were good, but the support was "shocking". That's a powerful statement. It makes it clear that for some of our dealer readers, poor support can outweigh an excellent product.

And this isn't the first time we've heard sentiments such as this. In our informal, off-the-record chats on visits to dealerships or at shows, we've been told that trust is built over years but can disappear remarkably quickly. If dealers lose confidence that a supplier will support them when it matters, the relationship inevitably begins to suffer.

This particular dealer’s comments about pricing were equally interesting. Margin, unsurprisingly, remains important, but so too does creating what the dealer described as a "level playing field" between larger and smaller dealers. Nobody wants to be involved in a race to the bottom where discounting becomes the only way to win business.

And then there was one final observation that I found particularly encouraging.

The dealer highlighted a particular manufacturer as an example of a franchise where they can "price sensibly and still get sales, as people are more often appreciating face-to-face support."

That has always been the mantra of the network. Back in the day the boast was that they offered something more than the sheds, whilst more recently that they provide so much more in comparison to online retailers. Giving a service that these price-led retailers simply don't, the network has always prided itself on expert advice, product demonstrations, servicing, repairs and long-term relationships. In an age where so much purchasing has become digital and remote, it's reassuring to hear a dealer say that customers are still prepared to pay for that expertise rather than simply chase the lowest possible cost.

But of course, that's just one dealer's perspective.

I'd be interested to know whether others agree. Is a great product genuinely not enough anymore? Is manufacturer support vital when you're deciding whether to keep or drop a franchise? And are your customers still placing enough value on face-to-face service to justify paying a little more?

My suspicion is that many dealers will answer yes to all three. But I'd be fascinated to hear whether your experiences tell a different story. Please leave a comment below or drop me a line.

NEW UK DIRECTOR FOR KRAMP
Following Des Boyd's retirement

Mark Rogers

New man moves into the business from competitor TVH, where he was its UK managing director.

Following the retirement this summer of its UK country director, Des Boyd, who has seen turnover more than double during his tenure, Kramp has appointed Mark Rogers to succeed him in the same role.

Mark moves into the business from competitor TVH, where he was its UK managing director.

Kramp says Mark has a unique background for a senior executive, having begun his career as a mobile technician and then a field service engineer. He credits his practical knowledge and understanding of engineers as a significant factor in his career’s success since moving into management.

To further Mark’s management credentials, he completed an MBA at the University of Northampton in 2019.

“I was very excited by Kramp’s ambition,” says Mark. “There’s a huge desire to grow, with lots of opportunity to move quickly, which is what I like. The business has clear, ambitious goals for where it wants to be by 2030.”

Mark says he is grateful to Des for leaving the UK business in great shape, with an experienced, motivated team ready to meet a set of challenging objectives. “My job is to add fresh impetus to the fantastic progress that has already been made,” he concluded.

EDUCATIONAL EVENT HIGHLIGHTS TECHNOLOGY
For commercial landscaping

Attendees at the event

The one-day event combined presentations with live demonstrations, covering topics including battery-powered equipment, robotic mowing, commercial battery systems, operator safety and current legislation.

GroundsFest Academy recently teamed up with Kress to host a free educational event showcasing the latest developments in commercial landscaping technology.

Held at Bearwood Park Training Ground, the home of Reading FC's training facilities, the one-day event combined presentations with live demonstrations, covering topics including battery-powered equipment, robotic mowing, commercial battery systems, operator safety and current legislation.

Attendees also saw demonstrations of Kress commercial products, including robotic mowers, blowers, brush cutters, hedge trimmers and the CyberTank Power Station, before taking a behind-the-scenes tour of the training ground to see how the site is maintained.

Jim Kirkwood, director of product management at Kress UK, said the Academy offered a valuable opportunity for professionals to explore emerging technology. "It's a great opportunity to learn on a one-to-one basis, discover new equipment, understand new technology and see how it could improve their business, increase efficiencies and help prepare for the future," he said.

Among those attending was Ewen Kenny, assistant groundsman at Cheltenham College, who said he had attended to gain a better understanding of robotic technology and its role in sports turf management.

The event forms part of the GroundsFest Academy programme, which delivers free CPD-focused educational events throughout the year, supported by industry partners.

PRO LAWNCARE SHOWCASED
At the UKLCA Summer Festival

UK Lawn Care Association Summer Festival

One of the key themes throughout the festival was the importance of scarification as part of a proactive lawn maintenance programme.

PSD Groundscare say they recently returned to this year's UK Lawn Care Association (UKLCA) Summer Festival with a clear objective - to demonstrate how professional lawn renovation equipment can help groundsmen, landscapers and lawn care specialists create healthier, stronger and more resilient turf.

Throughout the event, the team showcased the latest innovations from Eliet and Sabo, giving visitors the opportunity to see first-hand how scarification, overseeding and topdressing form the foundations of successful professional lawn care programmes. From sports pitches and fine turf through to commercial landscaping and domestic lawn renovation, visitors were able to discuss complete lawn care solutions with the team.

One of the key themes throughout the festival was the importance of scarification as part of a proactive lawn maintenance programme. While mowing improves presentation, said, PSD, scarification improves the health of the lawn itself by removing thatch and moss, allowing water, oxygen and nutrients to reach the rootzone.

Peter Mercer, UK sales manager at PSD Groundscare, said, "The UKLCA Summer Festival is one of the highlights of the year because it brings together professionals who are passionate about producing exceptional turf. It gave us the perfect opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of scarification and complete lawn renovation, while showcasing the Eliet and Sabo ranges, including the EcoCure Topdresser. We'd like to thank everyone who visited the stand and we look forward to continuing to support groundsmen and landscapers across the UK with the right machinery and expertise."

THE ARCHIVE TO MARK 80th EDITION
Of upcoming show

The Archive

Organisers say the brand-new feature is designed to take visitors on a journey through the history of grounds management.

SALTEX will celebrate its 80th edition when it returns to the NEC Birmingham this November 11-12.

Organisers, the GMA, say that part of the celebrations will be the launch of The Archive, a brand-new feature designed to take visitors on a journey through the history of grounds management.

They say the Archive will guide visitors through five defining eras of the industry's evolution. Starting in the years before SALTEX and before modern mechanisation, The Archive will map the development of grounds care through the Hurlingham era, the rise of post-war machinery and the emergence of specialist equipment tailored to different sports surfaces.

The GMA said in an statement, "Visitors will follow the transformation of grounds management into the highly skilled profession it is today, driven by advances in technology, before arriving at the modern era where sustainability and automation are shaping the future of the sector.

"The eras will tell a powerful story of continuous progress, showing how generations of grounds professionals have adapted to changing demands while maintaining the highest standards of playing surfaces across the UK and beyond."

One of the standout attractions within The Archive will be a rare pre-1938 collection of machinery, made possible through the support of The Hall & Duck Trust.

Among the exhibits will be an 1858 Improved Budding lawn mower, manufactured by Ferrabees of Stroud and widely recognised as one of the foundations of modern mowing technology. Visitors will also have the opportunity to see a 1905 Ransomes Patent Motor Mower, believed to be the earliest known Ransomes pedestrian mower, alongside a 1919 Simar rotavator, thought to be the oldest surviving example of its kind in the UK.

The collection will also include a 1928 water-cooled JP lawn mower and one of the earliest known Dennis mowers, dating back to 1923.

Sarah Hunter, Head of Events at the GMA, said, "As we celebrate 80 editions of SALTEX, we're proud to honour our heritage whilst still showcasing the latest innovations that will define the next generation of grounds management. This year's event will be one of the most memorable in our history."
