'LET'S PUT THE SHOW ON RIGHT HERE'
The evolution of LAMMA has been remarkable
by Chris Biddle Consultant Editor

Chris Biddle

The decision to move LAMMA to the NEC will divide opinion and has logic, but now the exhibitors need to be on-side.

‘Let’s put the show on right here’ was the rallying call by Charlton Heston in the excellent 1952 film, The Greatest Show on Earth after circus trains (based on Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circuses) crashed spectacularly losing the Big Top and all the lighting equipment.

For some reason, I’ve always associated that phrase with the pioneers of the LAMMA show. Although Smithfield and the Royal Show were still going strong, the members of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers Association (LAMMA) decided in late 80s that they would go it alone and stage their own show for the county’s farmers. Much in the spirit of local independence - for Catalonia read Lincolnshire.

From modest beginnings, the show grew year on year. Exhibitors were attracted by the fact that they could pitch up with kit and minimal stand building costs. The demise of Smithfield in 2004 and the Royal Show in 2009, resulted in LAMMA becoming the main UK machinery show. Never mind, that it was held in January and outdoors – crowds flocked to the Newark showground. For manufacturers it became the essential spring-board for the coming season.

After being run by a dedicated, but essentially volunteer team, the success of LAMMA finally outgrew their management and organisational resources. The show was acquired by Briefing Media (publishers of Farmers Guardian) in 2012, who decided that it had outgrown Newark, with the result that LAMMA was moved to the East of England Showground in Peterborough in 2014.

Although the facilities were a step-up with more hard surfaces and facilities, the cynics said that all it really did was to move the often horrendous traffic queues, 50 miles down the A1 from Newark. The show had also changed in concept as the major manufacturers spent thousands on building elaborate pavilions to display their products. It had become an indoor show, outdoors, for many of the big players.

Now, another move, prompted it is believed by the East of England Showground giving notice to Briefing Media to quit the site.  Possibly this was because some of the showground was allocated for redevelopment, or complaints about traffic or that the show had outgrown the site. The reason is unclear.

A number of alternate sites were considered, including inevitably Stoneleigh, but NEC it is. Briefing Media say that two essential elements of LAMMA will be retained, a January date and free entry to visitors who surely will need to be counted and profiled through registration. For years, visitor number to LAMMA have been a 'guess-timate', largely based on the number of cars in the car park. That is totally unacceptable for a show with over 900 exhibitors attracting around 40,000 visitors.

The decision will divide opinion. There is little doubt that for access, accommodation, facilities and much more, the NEC is the UK’s ‘go-to’ exhibition space.  But cost, particularly, for smaller exhibitors will be a concern. Smithfield was eventually sunk through rising exhibitor costs and access difficulties (oh, and the fact that a swimming pool lay under the Earls Court floor, and there were visions of a combine taking a dive!).

The major European ag machinery shows, Agritechnica in Hanover and SIMA in Paris are essentially indoor events in purpose built show halls, and so there is a logic to the move. But we’ve seen what happens when exhibitors desert an event. It happened with GLEE and spectacularly with GAFA Cologne as far as the turf machinery sector is concerned. But the SALTEX move to the NEC from a charming Thameside venue in an often sunny September, has been a success as far as you can see - although many are still nostalgic for the open-air, down-to-earth shows of yesteryear.

It is of some surprise (or perhaps not) that AEA (the machinery manufacturers representative body) were not consulted ahead of the decision to move to the NEC, nor were they given any details of the new show concept. AEA has had aspirations in the past about staging its own show, which probably was a concern to Briefing Media.

So LAMMA organisers will have a delicate and sensitive path to tread ahead of the 2019 NEC show. Otherwise we could see splinter groups taking matters into their own hands in a reprise of the actions of the founding fathers of LAMMA - and with the cry ‘Let’s put the show on right here!’

LAMMA MOVES TO NEC
Farming show moves indoors from 2019

LAMMA

The organisers of LAMMA have announced that the farm equipment show will move from its present Peterborough site to Birmingham's NEC in 2019.

Briefing Media, organisers of the LAMMA show have announced that the UK’s largest agricultural machinery show will move to the NEC from January 2019.

Commenting on the move to the NEC, Elisabeth Mork-Eidem, Group Head of Events at Briefing Media, said: “We are excited by the opportunities that this new venue creates for the LAMMA show.  LAMMA has a deserved reputation as the meeting place for the entire industry at a time of the year when key buying decisions are made.  The move to the NEC will provide an entirely indoor environment, bringing it up to the professional standards that are expected of a market-leading event.”

She added: “The NEC is the UK’s leading exhibition venue and provides unparalleled scale, facilities and transport links, and we are looking forward to working with the NEC to ensure that LAMMA grows and develops further to serve this important market.“LAMMA will retain its focus on farm machinery, equipment and services and will build on the reputation earned over more than 30 years.”

Kathryn James, Managing Director of NEC Group Conventions and Exhibitions said: “We are delighted to welcome LAMMA, along with their exhibitors and visitors, to the NEC. We understand the importance of the event to the agricultural sector, and are honoured to be working with them as they bring their popular event indoors to serve the growing needs of the industry.”

LAMMA will continue to be a free-to-attend event and will remain on its proven and successful January timeline.

LAMMA ’18 (17th-18th January), which will be the last event to be held at the East of England Showground in Peterborough, will be the largest LAMMA ever, with more than 900 exhibitors and an estimated 40,000 visitors from across the UK and abroad.

The first LAMMA show at the NEC will take place on Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th January 2019.

MST EXPAND MF TERRITORY
Move into North Devon and Somerset

Nigel Godefroy (l) and Simon Foster

MST Group  has been awarded new franchise territory for Massey Ferguson in North Devon and Somerset and plan new depot.

MST Group has announced an expansion of its Massey Ferguson territory which sees it move into new franchise areas covering North Devon and most of Somerset.

MST already has two large depots, one in Lee Mills near Plymouth and one in Tiverton, and is the biggest Massey Ferguson dealer in Devon, meaning the addition of North Devon and Somerset to its network makes it the manufacturer's largest dealer in the South West and one of the biggest in the UK.

In addition to its coverage in south and mid Devon, MST now has responsibility for the area from North Devon up through Bridgwater and into North Somerset, and from Yeovil in South Somerset all the way to the Mendips near Bristol Airport.

To support the two new franchises MST is currently finalising plans to open a new depot facility in south Somerset, which should be ready by early 2018. Until then, Massey Ferguson customers in Somerset and North Devon will be supported by MST's mid Devon facility in Tiverton.

MST has been a Massey Ferguson dealer since the 1940s and is one of the longest-running agricultural machinery dealerships in the country, with a reputation built on providing excellent services delivered by skilled, knowledgeable staff.

Nigel Godefroy, Director at MST, said: "This positive news strengthens the whole of our business and provides us with the critical mass needed to succeed and enhances our ability to invest in our agricultural business and support existing and new customers alike."

Fellow director Simon Foster said “This is extremely positive news for our company and represents the largest structural change in our region for the supply of agricultural machinery for many years. MST's strong market share performance, alongside our depth and experience of management, meant we were able to demonstrate the company was well placed to take on additional territory."

As with the company's Devon-based depots the new facility will sell the full range of Massey Ferguson products as well as other complementary agricultural and ground care lines.

The project to open the new depot in Somerset and launch MST's stewardship of the Massey Ferguson franchise in the county will be managed by Matt Hellyer, MST's After Sales Director, and Mark Lyes, the company's Agricultural Sales Manager, who will build the new team and set up the physical infrastructure within the new depot.

The move has inevitably impacted on neighbouring dealer Compass Tractors who currently represent MF in North Devon and Cornwall. It is believed that Compass are now in a notice period for MF and will now focus on Fendt along with their other franchises in the future.

Nigel Godefroy and fellow director Simon Foster acquired Medland, Sanders and Twose, along with Parkins Industrial Supplies (MST Group) in July 2012 through their business investment group Longhouse. It was the first acquisition for Plymouth-based Longhouse who have since acquired a roofing company in the South West.

HUSQVARNA LOOK TO THE FUTURE
SALTEX stand will showcase new innovations

Husqvarna at SALTEX

Husqvarna will be providing visitors to SALTEX with a glimpse into the future for commercial turfcare.

Husqvarna is showcasing a range of new products and innovations at SALTEX 2017 located at stand H040 in Hall 8.

The company says their battery series has a number of key benefits and SALTEX will give people the opportunity to learn about the series, including the new 536LiHE3 Battery Pole Hedge Trimmer.

The battery series has been specifically designed for commercial applications and with users in mind. Husqavrna say several innovative features are in place to improve productivity and save time and money. They describe the Li-ion 36V battery as long lasting, durable and IPX4 rated meaning it is weatherproof, allowing commercial users to work in all weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.

A new development for 2018 is Husqvarna Connect. These new Bluetooth capable batteries allow users to view the battery charge state, estimated remaining run time and the latest session time. The new batteries will also send notifications and alerts when they are fully charged and ready and also when they’re outside their workable temperature range.

Husqvarna Fleet Services is a cloud-based service that gives landscapers and tree care companies an overview of machine fleet inventory, automated HAV records, service monitoring and location information. The system also monitors optional operator and machine usage style offering educational guidelines at the click of a button.
Fleet Services also give the ability to audit a fleet to help guard against losses. With the new Bluetooth platform, data can be collected in real-time, giving professional landscapers superior situational awareness of their machine fleet. Husqvarna Fleet Services 2.0 will be available in early 2018 and continuous updates that bring additional functionality will be released throughout 2018.

Husqvarna is also introducing two robotic mowers; Automower 520 and Automower 550 - developed specially for green space managers and landscaping companies. The aim is to improve lawn quality and sustainability, while reducing costs and freeing up time for professional landscapers to concentrate on other tasks.

Automower 500-series takes all the benefits of Husqvarna robotic lawnmowers with added features, specially designed for professional usage. The company says it is confident these products will provide professionals with an effective solution to lawn care after holding a number of successful trials throughout 2017 at parks in Edinburgh and London, as well as Worcestershire Golf Club, Newcastle Airport, The Eden Project, Cornwall and Cragside National Trust.

Husqvarna will be on hand to talk about its vision for the future of commercial lawn maintenance Husqvarna Solea at SALTEX. Watch video below:

Self-Propelled and effortless, the Little Wonder is rugged and built for a tough life yet it’s also smooth with the hydrostatic drive making it easy to operate and less fatiguing for the user. That translates to higher productivity and with a forward speed of up to 4.2mph/6.7kmh and 1.7mph/2.7kmh in reverse you can quickly cut through the work.

“The Classen, Little Wonder and Mantis ranges offers the turf professional, groundsman and greenkeepers the complete year-round maintenance system,” says Schiller’s Commercial Director, David Goose, “and they are backed by our commitment to our dealers and continued innovation to meet customer needs. We’re confident in the quality and durability and provide comprehensive warranties to support this.”

Evopos UK Ltd
are the producer of the Dealer management software which service dealers are taking a serious look at. This all-in-one solution with friendly and effective telephone support may be worth checking out, if you are a new service dealer or are currently unsatisfied with your current system.

The latest version includes quick and easy point of sale software, comprehensive stock control, workshop organiser, hire contract module, accounting package and state of the art automated SMS and email marketing, all of these features are available in specifically designed dealer packages.

"What makes Evopos streets ahead of its competitors?" asks Denis Bullen (MD). "Evopos is perfect for the Service Industry; everything about the customer is tracked, sales of parts, whole goods and all vital contact information."

Denis Bullen, Evopos md

Denis continues, "The workshop module is of particular interest to most service dealers. Evopos will fulfil the main three requirements that make any busy workshop successful.

  • 1. Easy to use; this minimises mistakes making sure correct time is billed for and all the information is correct.
  • 2. Maximises sales and repeat custom using the excellent time management and service reminder tools built into Evopos.
  • 3. Helps to provide the very best customer service; by providing engineers and salesman with all the necessary information to make the job or the sale as easy for the customer as it as easy for you.

"As far as I can see the workshop process is fairly straight forward

  • Step one: Book the job in, providing the customer with details regarding the job.
  • Step two: Book parts and labour to the job.(Evopos will automatically remind the customer to drop the machine off and when the job is finished, let the customer know when to pick it up via an SMS text or email alert.)
  • Set three: Produce a professional looking invoice for when the customer picks up their machine.

"A comprehensive history is retained within the Evopos system. For example for each machine you can see who has previously owned it and what work it has had done to it.

"Evopos offers a very competitive pricing structure, where costs are kept to a minimum. A standard dealer package can cost as little as £75.00 per month, there are no hidden extras. If you are concerned about losing your old customer database, this shouldn't be a problem. The helpful support team can convert most databases into workable Evopos data at no extra charge.

"Evopos is a low cost way to help make your business more controllable and profitable. It's a total business management solution."

Whether you are a new start-up or run an existing business, why not contact Evopos and arrange a no obligation free demo and see what Evopos can do for your business.

Contact them direct on telephone: 01202 795900 or register online at Evopos.com and they will call you.
