WEATHER THE STORM
Upturn in outdoor power equipment forecast
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs

Steve Gibbs

With another cold snap predicted for the Easter weekend, we've got to look further ahead and take the positives where we can.

Firstly, a moment of housekeeping - as this time next week is Good Friday, there won't be a Service Dealer Update popping into your inbox. We'll be back with you on Friday April 6th.

Hopefully you wouldn't have been able to find time to read your weekly dose of Service Dealer anyway - what with the glorious Easter weekend we definitely going to have! There’s bound to be a stampede of people wanting to get outside and use their newly acquired outdoor power equipment!

Actually, bringing us all back down to earth with a bump, the slightly concerning forecast appears to be that the cold weather might be returning next week. Which is awfully unfair considering how long and unseasonable March has been.

It's certainly been an odd month with many parts of the country seeing at least a couple of significant dumps of snow. And it's been extra weird where I'm based in Salisbury because we've also had the plot of a ridiculous airport novel playing out in our town!

These weather conditions though, have actually played into the hands of online retailers. According to figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, UK online retail sales were up +13.1% year-on-year in February. With the Beast from the East hitting the UK in the last week of February, the cold weather saw consumers turn online in their droves, causing a +3.5% lift in sales compared to the previous week. Which is not what bricks and mortar dealers want to hear!

But we shouldn't be all doom and gloom. We all know that the weather effects this industry more than most. And we all know that the weather will eventually pick up and the grass will grow. Hopefully then the season will just extend through October, November and into December.

And in the main, the market for outdoor powered equipment is looking up. I read a report out of the States this week that said global demand for powered lawn and garden equipment is forecast to grow 2.5 percent per year to $24.2 billion in 2021.

The report by The Freedonia Group, a Cleveland-based industry research firm, said a good proportion of this expected upturn will be as a result of the continuing improvements in battery powered products and the expected rise in popularity of robotic mowers.

The American Outdoor Power Equipment (OPE) magazine featured an interview with Jennifer Christ, manager of consumer and commercial products at The Freedonia Group, about the report. With regards to battery products, she told them, "Battery-powered equipment will achieve increased market share in all global regions, as technological advances make these products increasingly competitive with engine-driven equipment. Global demand for battery-powered lawn and garden equipment is forecast to increase 5.5 percent per year to $3.3 billion in 2021."

And in terms of other product sectors, she said, "Lawnmowers will continue to account for the largest portion of sales, owing primarily to the number of homeowners who possess and maintain their own lawns in the U.S., Canada, and Western Europe." As well as this Jennifer also cites chainsaws as expecting to post the fastest growth through 2021, in part, she says, because these are less concentrated in mature developed markets than other product types. "Economic advances in developing nations will spur strong growth for chainsaws outside of the core lawncare market, as these products find use in applications such as forestry, roadside maintenance, and clearing land for construction," she is quoted as saying.

So that's some good news isn't it? I know it doesn't help much when you're shovelling your van out of the snow again to think that there will be a 2.5% increase in global sales come 2021 - but we've got to take the positives where we can!

Happy Easter!

Mark Bartram of Bartram Mowers is running the Marathon Des Sables, running the equivalent of six marathons carrying all his kit and food required for the duration.

Mark Bartram (54) of Bartram Mowers is running the Marathon Des Sables starting on the 8th April, lasting seven days across part of the Sahara Desert.

During that time, he will run the equivalent of six marathons and will have to carry all his kit and food required for the duration of the race.

Mark Bartram has been training in slightly different conditions to what he'll encounter in the Sahara!

Mark, who says this proves you are never too old to take on even the harshest physical challenges, has been training for most of the last 12 months and has used part of the North Norfolk Coastal Path in an attempt to replicate the conditions he will experience in the Sahara.

Mark commented “Whilst I have been able to train running on sand I have no experience of running in temperatures that are likely to be over 40 degrees centigrade for most of the race. In fact, I have been more familiar with sub-zero temperatures and snow in recent weeks!”

Mark is raising money for the Wooden Spoon children’s charity and Walking With The Wounded.

DOUBLE CELEBRATION
At Dooson Bobcat demo days

Bobcat Plant - Loader production line

Double milestones of the 60th anniversary of Bobcat and 40 years in excavator manufacture for Doosan celebrated by dealers at company's recent Demo Days.

With the double milestones of the 60th anniversary of Bobcat and 40 years in excavator manufacture for Doosan, the organisers and the dealers and customers visiting Doosan Bobcat Demo Days held at the end of February 2018 had more than usual to celebrate.

This latest version of the successful Demo Days event was staged at the Doosan Bobcat Campus at Dobříš, close to the capital city of Prague in the Czech Republic.

Attended by hundreds of customers from over 20 countries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the Demo Days provided a unique opportunity to try out the full range of the latest Doosan and Bobcat products in working conditions. The event also provided customers with the opportunity to talk about the machines and solutions for their business applications with product specialists and demonstrators from Doosan Bobcat.

From its roots in the world’s first skid-steer loader, the Bobcat range has greatly diversified and today, Bobcat is also a manufacturer of compact excavators and telehandlers, with full line-ups of both types of product for markets worldwide.

As well as the company’s 40 years in excavator manufacture, this year also marks the sale of the 400,000th machine since Doosan entered the construction equipment market. In 2018, Doosan is one of the top six heavy construction equipment manufacturers in the world with a range of crawler and wheeled excavators, wheel loaders and articulated dump trucks.

At Demo Days, the external space is maximised to give customers plenty of room to drive and operate even the largest machines from the Doosan range, as well as the complete range of Bobcat machines and attachments. Several of these products are presented in working application scenarios that demonstrate how Doosan and Bobcat machines and attachments are used in customer markets such as quarrying, road maintenance, utilities and forestry.

The Dobříš campus is a unique operation among Doosan Bobcat’s many facilities around the world. As the home to the Innovation Center and the training centre for EMEA and with the opportunities it offers for customers to tour the site’s manufacturing plant, where over 80% of Doosan Bobcat compact machines destined for markets in EMEA are produced, the Dobříš campus is an unrivalled venue for an event like Demo Days.

Bobcat Plant - Loader production line

.

Opened in 2007 and recently expanded in 2015, the 6000m2 Training Center provides training for the entire portfolio of Doosan and Bobcat products, with the aim of encouraging business growth through the development of professional skills across the business, offering world-class training of dealer management, salesforces, service staff and aftermarket teams as well as employees at Doosan Bobcat.

The Training Center is based around a large main building with four training rooms, each capable of holding 25-30 individuals. In addition to the classrooms, the Training Center also includes offices, five workshops for service training and a total of 15,000 m2 of outdoor area which is devoted to working with Doosan and Bobcat machines at Demo Days.

One of the highlights of the Demo Days is - as the name states - the demo show. Each time the Demo Days take place, the demo team changes the choreography, so that it is a new show on every occasion. The use of live music, performing artists, colour laser lights, fog effects and fireworks made it a spectacular celebration of the two birthdays at Doosan and Bobcat.
