PLUGGING IN TO THE MAINSTREAM PRESS
Brands spreading the electric message
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs

Steve Gibbs

At an event attended by journalists representing the wider consumer gardening press this week, many brands familiar to specialist dealers were heavily promoting their cordless options.

During a week of a relentlessly upsetting news cycle, it was most heartening to leave my desk and attend a vibrant industry event.

Travelling into London to attend the Garden Press Event at the Business Design Centre in Islington on Wednesday, it was encouraging to simply see masses of normal people going about their normal, everyday business. Whist at the event itself, an upbeat and positive atmosphere pervaded, with encouraging business stories being shared, hands being shaken and the word being spread that the gardening sector is in good spirits.

I've attended this event annually for a number of years now and it has been very interesting to watch how it has grown - especially in regards to the number of machinery brands exhibiting. This show isn't open to members of the trade or the buying public, instead it's very specifically geared toward members of the gardening press. I would guess that most of the attendees aren't like myself, representing trade journals - the vast majority will be writing for national newspapers, magazines, blogs and websites which will be read by domestic consumers.

It's therefore great to see more and more brands, familiar to the specialist dealer network, choosing to have a presence at the event each year. All are in attendance with the intention of gaining the attention of these journalists, so their machinery can hopefully receive increased column inches in the gardening press. Press which will be read by your customers.

Husqvarna and Kubota were two companies opting join the show this year. They were there alongside other garden machinery providers including STIHL, John Deere, Cobra Garden, Hayter, Greenworks, Ambrogio, Ego, Barrus, Webb, Honda, Makita, Flymo & Gardena and Worx.

STIHL's Simon Hewitt chatting to Steve Gibbs

I'm pretty convinced that's the biggest ever showing of machinery manufactures at the Garden Press Event, which has to be seen as a positive move. It's so important that the message of these specialist brands is disseminated out to the public through the papers they buy and the blogs and influencers they choose to visit.

And what was the major message which was being passed on this year? On the whole, battery.

Last year I felt it was very specifically robotics which was the dominant machinery trend at the show. This year it very much felt like battery powered machinery in general was what most companies thought these journalists' readers would be interested in.

Around the stands and it was interesting to hear from Cobra regarding their newly launched campaign which will see them beginning to phase out petrol introductions to their range. MD Peter Chaloner told me there are still some petrol releases in the pipeline but they very much believe that cordless is the way the garden machinery sector is heading.

Ego were of course keen to discuss their recently launched Challenge 2025 manifesto. Steve Roskell, marketing director EMEA at Ego said there would be more to come on this from the company, with its genuine goal being the education and enlightenment of consumers regarding the benefits of battery powered equipment. He said the information they would be putting out there is to help consumers "make the right decision".

Greenworks were promoting their new twin-battery range for 2020, which includes a 48 volt mower which has power provided by two separate 24-volt batteries. Mark Mosely (above), marketing director, said this had been introduced because consumers want a high-powered mower but find the weight of a large battery inhibiting when transferred over into a piece of hand-held equipment. "We have solved this problem," Mark said, "by powering the lawnmower with two 24-volt batteries which are light in weight and can then be used individually in the line trimmers and cutters."

Hayter had an eye-catching stand with a beautifully restored vintage Harrier sat alongside a prototype battery-powered version of the mower, due for release later this year. The display made clear to the journalists in attendance the story of the heritage of the brand and just what a British success story the company is. Craig Hoare, sales and marketing manager, told me they are looking forward to the new battery model coming out in order to give the dealers a premium battery mower they can really get behind.

Makita were keen to point out that what counts in cordless equipment is the quality of the battery used. Mark Earles, business development manager (above), told me "Our strength is in our battery," which is being used across their new range of equipment.

All this is not to say there were no new petrol powered machines on show at all. STIHL featured a mix of power supplies on their stand, as did Barrus, Webb and Deere. However it certainly felt apparent that for this show and for this specific audience, battery was the loud and clear message.

Well not that loud, but that's one of the selling points.

ISEKI TAKE ON RAYMO
Electric, radio-controlled mowers

Iseki UK & Ireland have announced that they have been appointed as the exclusive distributor for Raymo products throughout the UK, Ireland and the Middle East.

Following numerous discussions and feedback from their customers, Iseki say that they noticed a gap in the market where contractors are being asked by their customer base for all-electric options for their grass cutting needs. Iseki believe one of the problems with electric mowers is that the weight of transporting an operator (and all the associated hardware) negatively impacts on the run time that can be achieved from the batteries. By taking the operator off of the mower and making it remote control, Iseki says the Raymo products can give "unrivalled run times from its lithium battery pack".

Commenting on the appointment David Withers explained, “Over the last few years there have been several manufacturers that have wanted us to distribute their products for them but in each instance we decided that it might distract from the core mission of growing the Iseki customer base. In the case of Raymo though, the product offering was so unique and so different to anything in the Iseki range and so ‘absolutely of the moment’ that we have decided to enter into this distribution arrangement.”

There's still time to be in with a chance of winning the £200 on offer to one lucky dealer who completes the online survey, canvassing the opinions of agricultural machinery dealers regarding tractor brands.

TAP, the owners of Service Dealer, are running the survey which will take you through a series of questions about yourself, your dealership, and the tractor market.

Shaun Cooper who heads up insight and strategy at TAP said, "Insight is at the heart of everything we do at TAP. We have made it our business to understand the world of agriculture and to stand out as an agency with compelling content at its heart."

The results of the survey are intended to offer a better understanding of the current market, for the benefit of all in the industry

As well as asking some general questions about dealership performance, the survey is designed to drill down into what dealers think about various facets of tractor brands. Questions on quality, innovation, value for money, after sales support, training and marketing are all considered. There is also space to leave your thoughts on automation.

The survey is free to take part in and as an incentive to participate, one randomly chosen respondent will win a £200 prize draw.

Take the survey here.

The results will be published by TAP later in the Spring.

John C. May to take over

Samuel R. Allen

It has been announced that after a 45-year career, Samuel R. Allen has elected to retire on May 1st from his current position as chairman of the Deere & Company Board of Directors.

It has been announced that after a 45-year career, Samuel R. Allen has elected to retire on May 1st from his current position as chairman of the Deere & Company Board of Directors.

The Deere board has elected John C. May, the company's chief executive officer, to become chairman upon Allen's retirement. The company says the actions are another step in their "systematic process of leadership transition".

Allen has been chairman of the board of directors since 2010 and served as the company's chief executive officer from 2009 to 2019. May was named CEO in November 2019.

"As a result of Sam's leadership and vision, John Deere has developed a more dynamic business model and is uniquely positioned to capitalize on the demographic and technological trends that are defining the future of our businesses," said May.

Allen led the company to record growth and success. Over his decade of leadership, the company expanded its customer base, increased its global footprint, and made major gains in innovation and precision technologies.

"This was also a time of unmatched financial success which included nine of the ten highest-earning years in company history," May said.

Allen joined Deere as an industrial engineer in 1975 after graduating from Purdue University. In 2001, Allen joined the company's senior management team as senior vice president for human resources and industrial relations. Two years later, he was named president of financial services, power systems, and human resources.

Then in 2005, Allen became president of Deere's construction and forestry and power systems businesses. He was elected president and chief operating officer and a member of the board of directors in June 2009 and became Deere's ninth chief executive officer in August of that year.

May joined the board in August of 2019 and became Deere's tenth chief executive officer in November.

"As chairman, John will lead the board with the collaborative style and strategic, operating, and technical skills so capably demonstrated over his 23-year career with Deere," said Allen.

May joined Deere in 1997 and became part of the senior management team in 2012 as president of agricultural solutions and chief information officer. In 2018, he was named president of the Worldwide Agriculture & Turf Division, with responsibility for the Americas and Australia; the global harvesting, turf and utility, and crop care platforms; and intelligent-solutions group.

HAYTER RESTORES VINTAGE HARRIER
For golden anniversary

The restored Harrier

As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Hayter Harrier range of lawnmowers, Darren Hummersone along with members of the Hayter team, have worked to restore a vintage 1970’s Harrier model.

As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Hayter Harrier range of lawnmowers, Darren Hummersone along with members of the Hayter team, have worked to restore a vintage 1970’s Harrier model.

Forming part of the yearlong celebration of the Harrier’s golden anniversary, the search began at Hayter to source a vintage Harrier, to be set alongside the current models. The team eventually found a 1970s model available for purchase online and went about ordering the mower.

When the team received the Harrier from its previous owner it was in good working order, but work was needed to bring it back to its original appearance - the work was superficial as the mower itself still functioned. Darren Hummersone, grounds & golf product specialist at Reesink UK Ltd., a distributor for Toro products, was primarily in charge of the mower restoration.

As the red and green colours on the classic Harrier had faded over time, Darren had to colour match the paint, and repaint all of the parts of the mower. This involved disassembling the entire mower, cleaning all of the individual parts, repainting them, and reassembling the mower. Some of the original labels and smaller components also had to be replaced as, due to the age of the machine, not everything had lasted or had been lost over the years. Some parts were also shot blasted in the Hayter factory to enable them to be painted again.

Darren Hummersone said, “It was a real treat working on the 1970’s Harrier and to restore it to its former glory was a privilege. The mower itself worked well when we managed to get hold of it, so the process of restoring it wasn’t too complex – I mainly had to repaint the machine to get it looking as good as it used to.

“The Harrier range of mowers has always been a hugely popular and prestigious product range and one that has always enhanced the British gardening experience. I am really proud to have been able to help with celebrating the Harrier’s 50th anniversary.”

The restored Harrier was on display alongside the latest generation, prototype Harrier battery model in London this week at the Garden Press Event. The message of the heritage and longevity of such an iconic British brand, was clear for all the members of the press in attendance to see.

NEW HUSQVARNA AUTOMOWER® 305
Brings features of larger robotic mowers to a smaller model

Husqvarna Automower® 305

Developed for small gardens but equipped with the features of a larger robotic mower, the new Husqvarna Automower® 305 can handle slopes with an incline of up to 40% and an area of 600 m2.

Husqvarna – pioneer in robotic mowing, celebrates 25 years of robotic mower production by launching a new robotic mower, Husqvarna Automower® 305. Developed for small gardens but equipped with the features of a larger robotic mower, the new Husqvarna Automower® 305 can handle slopes with an incline of up to 40% and an area of 600 m2.

With features previously only found in its larger siblings, Husqvarna Automower® 305 brings premium performance into small gardens up to 600m2. The slope control of Automower® 305 ensures intelligent behavior when navigating the challenges of a garden. This means less wear and risk of the mower getting stuck on slopes of up to 40%. As well as this, its eco-mode reduces energy consumption and the potential risk of interfering with hearing aid systems.

“With Automower® 305 we are bringing increased and true Automower® performance into small gardens, offering premium capabilities and features in the lower price segment. Being built in modules, it provides us with new possibilities in both upkeep and customisation.”, says Olle Markusson, Director Robotics at Husqvarna.

Automower® Connect@Home lets the user control their Husqvarna Automower® 305 robotic mower within Bluetooth® reach with a smartphone, offering the possibility to see the current status of the mower, send start, pause and park commands and adjust the cutting height. Automower® Connect with cellular access, allowing GPS traction, integration with several smart home services and worldwide remote control, is offered as an accessory.

For carefree operation, Automower® 305 is equipped with a weather timer which automatically adapts the amount of mowing to the lawn growth rate. It also features a frost sensor which prevents the mower from working on a frosty lawn protecting the lawn appearance.

Manufactured in modules, the new Husqvarna robotic mower offers easy replacement of parts and the possibility to remove the body cover with a maintenance tool for cleaning with a hose pipe. There are a range off accessories available for the Automower® 305 including replaceable top covers which allows the customer to change the colour of the mower.

The Systematic Passage Mowing feature is a mowing pattern for operation in narrow passages. This system automatically guides the mower through narrow passages – for less tracking and faster handling.

Husqvarna Automower® 305 has a modern and forward-looking design with a pronounced front, slim waist and emphasized wheelhouses. Side protection offers increased strength whilst the mower’s compact and light build ensures easy manoeuvrability without compaction and tracking in small tricky gardens.

Olle Markusson explains: “Husqvarna Automower® 305 is perfect for those who want a pristine lawn but struggle to maintain it manually due to either complexity or time constraints. Automower® 305 will take the stress away from lawn maintenance with its technological features available in a small mower for the first time, making mowing simpler than ever before.”

Husqvarna Automower® is the world leading robotic lawnmower since 1995, mowing public and residential lawns around the world, and known for its quiet and reliable handling of complex lawns. Husqvarna Automower® can easily handle steep slopes, automatically return to its charging station, as well as be controlled from anywhere in the world with connectivity.

The UK made Husqvarna Automower® 305, is now available and has an RRP of £1,099 inc. VAT. The robotic mower is also included in the £100 OFF promotion which runs until the end of May giving a lower RRP of £999 inc. VAT.

INCREASED REVENUE OPPORTUNITIES:

To add value and revenue to the Husqvarna Authorised dealer, Husqvarna Automower® range including the NEW Automower® 305 can be offered with a 3 year warranty. The product must be registered, installed and serviced annually by an Authorised Husqvarna dealer for the extended warranty to apply. Product installation and servicing are very profitable methods of adding revenue to the product sale.

KRESS MISSION TAKES ROBOTIC LAWNMOWERS TO THE NEXT LEVEL
New range of robot mowers launches across the UK

Kress range

The Kress Mission range has innovative technology to take robot mowing to the next level.

With an annual growth that has reached tenfold, robotic mowers are becoming more popular with homeowners. However, their basic design has not changed significantly since they were invented in 1995.

Kress believes robotic mowers should do more than relieve users of the burden of pushing a mower each week. The Mission range has been designed from ground up, featuring innovative technologies that will set the industry agenda for the coming years.

Mission robots are enabled to take autonomous decisions to protect and enhance the health of turf. Thanks to the unique INTIVA technology (Intelligent Navigation Technology Inbound Variable Angle), Mission mowers optimize their mowing, requiring fewer passes to get the job done. When a border is reached, Mission robots gently turn in the best direction. Conversely, other robotic mowers stop, reverse, stop, and eventually turn, without being aware of which direction is best. Not only does this waste time, it wears the lawn along the borders and especially the corners.

Another innovation is the ultrasonic Obstacle Avoidance System, which is years ahead of the competition. Not only does the OAS avoid collisions, it tells the robot how to navigate complex paths such as through a group of trees in the lawn.

Temperature, precipitation, and solar radiation all affect grass growth. Connected to a network of local weather stations, Mission robots autonomously customize their work schedule accordingly.

Mission thrives in sloped gardens; it is equipped with REGEN technology that recharges the battery when the mower is running downhill, increasing the runtime.

Designing a robotic lawn mower around the grass does not mean neglecting users’ needs. The biggest complaint robotic lawnmower owners have is still manually trimming borders. Mission’s blade is offset to mow the perimeter of the lawn as closely as possible.

The charging station has also been re-thought from scratch. Unlike conventional charging stations which sit on large plastic pads, both unpleasant to the eye and killing the grass underneath, the pad of Mission’s base is the grass.

The Mission range has just launched in the UK and Ireland in time for Spring 2020. Only available at selected professional dealers.

Turn Digital Searches Into Showroom Visits

Garden Trader continues to show high numbers of targeted traffic and is designed to specifically identify and catch customers when they are researching a product online and helping them locate their local dealer.  Last year we delivered over 1.2m dealer search impressions on the site and over 24,000 individual dealer page views. Because of the site promotional criteria, we know the majority are actively looking to make a purchase (product or service).  All subscribed dealers can easily check their listing's analytics just by logging in to see for themselves just how Garden Trader is helping their business. If you do wish to re-subscribe or indeed register it is easy and takes just a few minutes.

Garden Trader is helping send quality leads to specialist garden machinery dealers in the UK.  It has been designed to  promote our dealer industry to consumers who are specifically searching for garden machinery products and services.

It is easy and quick to register and costs just £96 + VAT per year to be listed and all revenues in 2020 will be reinvested into promoting the site online.
