First up today, I'd like to draw your attention to a great video that's been put together by TAP's video wunderkind, David Comiskey.
Taking tons of footage that Duncan shot whilst on our recent road trip around some of our dealer readers' premises and condensing it down into bite-sized chunks, the short film offers a brief glimpse at some of the subjects that were discussed. In the clip that is released today onto Service Dealer's YouTube channel, you can hear what Balmers, Cutting Edge and Ripon think about the Autumn Budget's impact on their recruitment decisions - plus you can find out how GGM and Major Owen have evolved their dealerships over the years.
It's a neat little package, well worth a few moments of your time today. I suspect there will be more snippets to come across our social channels in the coming weeks - so do make sure you're fully subscribed to them all!
One topic that isn't dwelt upon in today's video, but did frequently crop up in conversations we held with the dealers we visited, is the potential seen in the robotic mowing market. Not just with domestic customers either, but increasingly with commercial operators looking at robotic and autonomous solutions to plug a staffing gap.
It was these conversations that prompted us to create a survey on the subject last week - which I'd like to thank so many of you for completing. We'll publish the results and bunch of your comments in the upcoming issue of the magazine. Without giving away too many spoilers, I will say that the consensus amongst those who responded is that the robotic market is indeed an area of growth - or is at least viewed as one with great growth potential.
Coincidentally, in the week when we chose to gauge our dealer readers' thoughts on our android friends, the technology was discussed extensively on a national radio business programme. As mentioned in our news today, BBC Radio 4's Dough recently featured Toro's Craig Hoare, Husqvarna's Yvette Henshall-Bell, and BAGMA's Nick Darking discussing the lawnmower market with entrepreneur host, Sam White, and technology futurist, Tom Cheesewright.
Firstly, it's fantastic that our sector is gaining coverage on a mainstream radio channel - so well done to whoever made that decision. Also, thumbs-up to Craig, Yvette and Nick for all articulating the breadth and importance of the outdoor powered machinery sector so clearly - kudos as well for mentioning the dealer network and the importance of having mowing machinery well maintained.
Interestingly, where the conversation on the show found itself returning to time and again is this whole area of robots taking over the sector. Yvette kicked things off in this regard saying, "Robotic lawnmowers are really changing the shape of the grass cutting market and hold so many opportunities."
Nick agreed, stating that he believed future market developments will see many more manufacturers moving over into GPS control, saying, "It can give greater detail in the garden."
Craig meanwhile, when asked what he foresees down the production pipeline talks of more autonomy. He says more units that can be both manually used and remotely controlled will help with safety issues and recruitment problems for professionals. "It will help with labour saving," he says.
Again, trying not to spoil anything, but the final words on the show go to futurist Tom Cheeseman. It's no surprise that he agrees that further automation will be "100%" where this sector heads - but he thinks further than just pure mowers. His ideas of integrating A.I into the units, so they can assess the grass and make decisions about further tasks that need to be carried out, are both fascinating and believable. In fact, one presumes your suppliers will be working on such advancements as we speak.
I really do recommend that our dealer readers have a listen to the show. It's 25 minutes of your time that'll be well spent, offering a decent indication of where industry leaders and observers feel the market is heading.
And from your feedback that we received last week, it seems that the dealer sector are also fully aware that robotics will be playing an increasingly fundamental part of their business-lives.
Again, we'd love to hear how that thought sits with your dealership. So please do let us know in the comments below.
