TEE-REX ON COURSE Australian PGA are tee'd off and plan a move away
10 tee at Palmer Coolum resort
Championship golf courses have their features. The Silken Bridge at St Andrews, the lighthouse at Turnberry - whilst the Palmer Coolum Golf Resort in Queensland has a 15ft Tyrannosaurus Rex.
The resort, which is hosting the Australian PGA championships this week, was recently bought by Australian mining magnate Clive Palmer and he is rapidly indulging in his passion for dinosaurs by installing a colony of moving, wangling, robotic life-size replicas.
So as the likes of Greg Norman, Darren Clarke and Geoff Oglivy prepare to tee off at the 10th, they are overlooked by Jeff, the first of over 150 planned to be placed around the resort, whose robotic movements have at least been switched off for the duration of the tournament
Australian star Stuart Appleby was among those confounded by Jeff. He has played around the world but said after his practice round “I had a chip out of the bunker yesterday with this thing in the background. I said to my caddy ‘I’ve never seen a dinosaur in the background of one shot I’ve hit in my life’,”
The Australian PGA are not amused and have announced that the tournament will be played elsewhere next year.
