UNCERTAINTY REIGNS
How can dealers react?
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs
With all the uncertainty in the market, how are dealers feeling about the upcoming Easter weekend, which is traditionally a real kick-start to the season for many?
Firstly today, a warm welcome to our dealer readers joining us from Service Dealer Ireland. We are delighted to have you here at our UK & Ireland edition. You'll now find even more news of direct interest to the specialist outdoor power equipment dealer sector - from the UK, Ireland and the around the world.
I want to thank Alan Mahon for doing such a superb job with SDI over these past several years. You'll now be receiving Service Dealer's Weekly Update direct to your inbox each and every Friday at noon. Well, not next Friday, actually. We're having a week off because it is Good Friday. But following that, Friday lunchtime is the time to expect your dose of industry news. We're pleased to have you all on board.
And speaking of the Easter period, that has, of course, traditionally been the kick off to many domestic outdoor power machinery dealers' seasons. Perhaps also even, a bellweather for how the rest of the year will pan out.
We have more evidence again today of just how tough 2025 is proving for agricultural machinery dealers, with news from the AEA that March's registrations for tractors in the UK was the lowest figure for the time of year since 2016. So I doubt the bank holiday weekend will make much difference to our readers serving the farming community.
But what about our readers who specialise in grass cutting machinery? How are you feeling about the upcoming couple of weeks? With this recent warm weather are you sensing that customers might be in the mood to spend on maintenance of their outside spaces?
We've heard quite a lot in recent weeks about the enthusiasm amongst dealers and their high-end customers for the latest, boundary wire-less robotic mowers. Do you think Easter will see a good run on those models? Please let us know any thoughts in the comments below.
However, from recent conversations with dealers - and, indeed, manufacturers - one suspects that unfortunately, a few sunny days and a long weekend might not be as conducive to getting tills ringing as it might have been in season's past.
This could be because there's one word that seems to be dominating our sector's discourse so far in 2025. It's not tariffs, although that certainly plays into it. Rather, the word I’ve heard repeatedly used by both retailers and suppliers alike during this year's opening months, is uncertainty. Not the most complicated or nuanced of words, but it does appear to encapsulate the current industry experience.
Dealer Chris Gibson of GGM summed it up, telling us, “There is so much uncertainty around at the moment. Many customers are just sitting on their hands, thinking that they will just 'make it do'."
So, how can dealers stay on top of all this uncertainty? Mostly through their own acumen and entrepreneurship, I guess. Tactics such as diversifying the product range may well be considered? That way, if one category slows down, another might pick up the slack.
Building strong relationships with suppliers is also important in times like these. As is maintaining a decent online presence and a solid digital marketing strategy.
We've also had dealers tell us about finding success with flexible financing or leasing options. If customers are hesitant to spend big up-front, giving them the option to pay over time can be the nudge they need. We've had several of our readers tell us how important their long-term hire options are with their commercial clients this year.
And finally, we must never underestimate the power of our specialist readers' after-sales services. Hopefully a surefire way of building customer loyalty. It should follow that customers will return time after time, if they know they’re being looked after.
So, while uncertainty is undoubtedly in the air this Easter - and a far from ideal situation - dealers who stay flexible, connected, and customer-focused can do their best to ensure they do well. Even when the market isn't playing ball.
Have a great Easter and see you back here on the 25th.

AGAINST THE ODDS
And the clock!
Jason Nettle, director of Winchester Garden Machinery, describes how he got on with his latest daunting challenge, the Southampton ABP Marathon.
Jason Nettle, director of Winchester Garden Machinery, is this year undertaking the challenge of 12 marathons in 12 months for good causes. Here he describes how he got on last weekend, his latest daunting challenge!

Hi everyone.
Well, another weekend, another marathon conquered! This time it was the Southampton ABP Marathon, which took place on Sunday the 6th April. To say the lead-up to this one was challenging would be a massive understatement. With little to no real training under my belt due to a persistent lack of time – the season is truly upon us and the thought of another marathon was, frankly, a bit daunting.
But, as you all know by now, I’m determined to see this crazy challenge through. I’m thrilled to share that I completed the Southampton ABP Marathon in a time of 4 hours and 55 minutes! For me, that's a massive achievement, especially considering the circumstances.
This month’s marathon was supported by STIHL GB and EP Barrus, who have both very kindly donated to the fantastic causes I’m running for. Their generosity and kind words are truly appreciated and provides a real boost to my motivation.
This weekend, I also had the wonderful support of my wife along the route. Having her there cheering me on made a huge difference and helped me push through those tougher miles.

While I’m incredibly proud of finishing in under five hours, the experience definitely brought to light the fact that some consistent training and taking better care of myself would have made the whole thing a little less… brutal! The body definitely felt the strain of minimal preparation.
This leads me to think about a recent article I read about men's health. It highlighted some stark realities: in the UK, men are nearly 60% more likely to die prematurely before the age of 75 compared to women. Factors like higher rates of smoking, alcohol consumption, drug use, and high cholesterol and blood pressure contribute to this. The article also pointed out that men have a lower life expectancy by four years.
It's not just about lifestyle choices either. Experts suggest biological reasons, like a less effective male immune system, play a role. Furthermore, there's often a lack of engagement with health services. Fewer than four in ten men take up the offer of NHS health checks, which are crucial for early detection of serious conditions.
The article also touched on inequalities, stating that life expectancy in the poorest 10% of areas is 10 years fewer than in the wealthiest, a larger gap than for women. In the most deprived areas, a man is 3.5 times more likely to die before the age of 75.
It's a real wake-up call and underscores why initiatives like the government's upcoming men's health strategy are so important. It also reinforces the need for us as individuals to take proactive steps in looking after ourselves – getting moving, talking to people, and taking up opportunities for health checks.
Each marathon, with its own unique challenges, reinforces the importance of what I’m doing – raising awareness and vital funds for Cancer Research UK, Prostate Cancer UK, Naomi House Children’s Hospice and St. Michael's Hospice.
So, how can you help?
- Sponsor me: Please continue to support these incredible charities by donating to my fundraising page. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a real difference.
- Cheer me on: Your messages of support are invaluable and keep me going, especially when the going gets tough. Thank you to everyone who sent their well wishes.
- Get inspired: Let's all prioritise our health and well-being. Even small steps towards a healthier lifestyle can have a significant impact.
Now, recovery in hand, I am prioritising more time for maintenance training before the next marathon looms. I hope that you’ll stay tuned for the next update on this ongoing adventure.

ETESIA ADD TO NETWORK FOLLOWING DEALER RETIREMENT
Two more take on range
One new dealer says when the opportunity arose to take on the dealership after the previous dealer retired, it was a natural fit for themselves.
Etesia UK has announced the appointment of two new dealers, Luxury Carts Group and Agri-Services Ltd, to cover the West of Scotland, the Highlands, and the central belt.
These appointments come following the retirement of Alex McDougall Mowers, who provided loyal service to the Etesia brand for over 30 years.

Les Malin, managing director of Etesia UK, said, "We thank Alex McDougall Mowers for their decades of dedicated service to Etesia. As they retire, we welcome two new dealers into the network to continue serving these key areas.. Both dealers share our commitment to providing exceptional customer service and high-quality machinery, and we are excited about the opportunities this brings."
Based in Denny, Falkirk, Luxury Carts Group has built its reputation on providing luxury golf cart sales alongside a growing portfolio of turf maintenance equipment. This family-run business is expanding its offerings with the addition of Etesia’s products.
Agri-Services Ltd, based in Kilmarnock, is a well-established family business that has served customers in agriculture, horticulture, and grounds care since the 1970s. Now in its third generation, the company continues to grow under the leadership of director Chris Moir.
Chris said, "When the opportunity arose to take on the dealership after the previous dealer retired, it was a natural fit for us. These machines are exactly what our customers need."

KRAMP ANNOUNCE PLANS TO EXPAND SPARE PARTS BUSINESS
Into new sectors
Leadership say they have set their sights replicating the success they have built up in the agricultural sector, into new markets of interest to specialist dealers.
Kramp have announced that having built up their presence as an agricultural spare parts supplier in the UK, their leadership now have sights set on growing in the forestry sector.

They plan to do this by replicating their success in the agricultural market, explains Leo Copping, field sales manager for Kramp. “We have to bring in brands that are relevant to forestry dealers to begin with. In 2024, we have added 25,000 items that are forestry and grass care specific. Every week, we are having further conversations with suppliers to bring more products on board.”
Edward Wall, the sales director for Hertfordshire Garden Machinery, says he has seen the proportion of business they do with Kramp grow since they began working together two years ago, despite the challenges of the last few years.
The dealership has a typical mix of domestic and professional customers. Edward says he has seen their tie-up with Kramp particularly benefit the contractors they service because they regularly order consumables like strimmer lines through them.
“We have found Kramp to be good to work with," confirmed Edward. "They have a great product range that has been more focused on agricultural parts historically, but their garden machinery range is building and improving.
“The best thing about Kramp is the fast delivery time. It’s good for us and our customers because we can turn the work around quicker. The ordering system is easy to use, too.”

LOWEST MARCH TRACTOR SALES SINCE 2016
Year to date down too
According to figures released by the AEA the total for registrations of new agricultural tractors in the UK during March was down by nearly a quarter on 2024's figures.
According to figures released by the AEA, the total registrations of new agricultural tractors in the UK during March 2025 was down by nearly a quarter, compared with the same month last year.
Agricultural economist at the Association, Stephen Howarth, points out that March is usually the peak month for registrations, and says it looks like this year is no exception. With 1,466 machines logged it's the most in any month since the same time last year. It was also the lowest figure for the time of year since 2016.
Stephen confirmed, "That meant the total number of tractors registered in the first quarter of 2025 was the lowest since 2001, reaching 2,228, 23% lower than in January to March 2024."

HSA 140
The most powerful battery-powered hedge trimmers in the STIHL range
Designed for professional landscapers, the HSA 140 R and HSA 140 T are the most powerful battery-powered hedge trimmers in the STIHL AP System, comparable in performance to the popular petrol HS 82.
Designed for professional landscapers, the HSA 140 R and HSA 140 T are the most powerful battery-powered hedge trimmers in the STIHL AP System, comparable in performance to the popular petrol HS 82.

Alongside its impressive performance, the HSA 140 also offers high levels of operator comfort. The new hedge trimmer weighs just 4.3 – 4.6 kg (without battery) and is comfortable to hold, balanced in operation, and features a rotating rear handle that locks into three positions across a 180-degree range, reducing wrist strain when working for extended periods of time on the same side of a hedge.
The HSA 140 is quiet in operation, and thanks to the highly effective anti-vibration system, is suitable for long periods of use too. When cutting hedges with a petrol machine, the fumes can often collect within the hedge, resulting in a poor working environment for the user. Battery-powered machines such as the HSA 140 can eliminate this problem entirely.
Featuring 38mm tooth spacing, the HSA 140 R is best suited to annual pruning or hedge reduction work. Its lower maximum RPM of 3,200 also allows thicker branch material to enter the cutters efficiently. Alternatively, the HSA 140 T has a higher maximum RPM and smaller 30mm tooth spacing, making it better suited to ornamental or fine leaf hedges such as taxus, buxus or privet, where a fine finish is required.
The HSA 140 benefits from a new gearbox design, consisting of a two-step planetary gear. This results in exceptionally high cutting performance and fast cold start-up, as well as improved protection of the internal components thanks to the integrated slip clutch.
To help prevent the blades from jamming, the HSA 140 features an innovative anti-blocking system that reverses the motors rotational direction to unblock the blades, minimising product downtime and enhancing the efficiency of the tool.
The HSA 140 utilises the same friction optimised, double edged blades that feature on the HS 82 professional petrol models, resulting in long lasting sharpness, a consistently clean cut, and ample durability for long cutting seasons.
When used with the recommended AP 200 S battery, the HSA 140 R has a maximum working time of 150 minutes, while the HSA 140 T’s maximum working time is up to 140 minutes.
