SICK OF NOISE?
So are Husqvarna
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs

At Husqvarna's 4th edition of their Silent City conferences in Hamburg this week the link between excessive noise exposure and illness was highlighted - alongside new machinery and technology developments designed to cut noise and emissions.

I was privileged to attend Husqvarna's fourth edition of their Silent City conferences in Hamburg this week.

Billed as "an ongoing project about the future of sustainable landscaping", this week's event continued the discussion which the previous ones in Antwerp, Stockholm and Edinburgh had raised - namely how can the maintenance of parks and open green spaces be maintained in greener, healthier and more ecologically sound ways in the future.

In Hamburg this week particular emphasis was placed on the value of trees in an urban environment and on the effects of noise from green space management.

The agenda was set by Sascha Menges, president of Husqvarna division, who said the company was "solidifying our commitment to the environment, but also to health." He said this wasn't just an intent, but rather this commitment has been "validated and calibrated" with external agencies, with very specific carbon reduction targets set by the manufacturer.

Sascha explained that for Husqvarna the most significant impact they as a company have in terms of both carbon footprint and noise emissions, is not through the manufacturing process or component delivery, it's through customer use of their machines. In order to mitigate this, the company are continually working on technological solutions.

"Robotics and automated systems are a fantastic opportunity to reduce emissions and become environmentally friendly, but also healthy," said Sascha. "Also battery products, an emission-free solution, are much better from a noise perspective but also from a carbon footprint perspective. Digital solutions can also reduce the carbon footprint of the products in use."

Sascha concluded that the message had to be strongly conveyed and shared that there can be much smarter ways we think about green maintenance.

An unhealthy noise

One of the great aspects of the Silent City conferences is that the audiences there, who are predominately made up of custodians of green spaces from across Europe and the wider world, are not simply sold to for the duration. Thought provoking expert speakers are invited to give their take on how they believe the future of professional landscaping in public places should be shaped. Hence this time around we heard from representatives from the WWF, from an organisation who quantify the value of trees called Treeconomics, from a landscape architect, and academics.

One speaker who provided quite a powerful message and one which for me, summed up what the entire conference was about, was Dr Jamie Banks from a non-profit organisation based in the U.S called Quiet Communities. Dr Banks explained that the organisation she represented has as their mission to "transition landscape maintenance to low noise, zero emissions practices with positive solutions to protect the health of workers, children, the public and the environment."

A fact which she discussed, which frankly I had no idea about, is that quite simply "noise makes you sick."

Rather than just hearing loss, prolonged exposure to noise from say, a petrol powered leaf blower, can lead to various health problems, most significantly cardiovascular disease. This article from Time magazine from February this year explains how "noise disrupts the body on the cellular level. Specifically, researchers say, it induces stress responses and activates the sympathetic “fight or flight” nervous system. This causes a spike in stress hormones, which can eventually lead to vascular damage."

Dr Banks believed that so far, in the U.S at least, legislation against noise levels from outdoor powered equipment had been largely ineffectual - mostly because the rules are not enforced stringently enough and are therefore widely flouted. She argued that with technological developments in battery-powered machines manufacturers were in a wonderful position with a real opportunity to actually improve the health of users.

With this in mind, the conference allowed Husqvarna the opportunity to launch several new products which have at the forefront of their development, this desire to keep noise and emissions at a minimum.

Quiet launches

Launched with an impressive practical demonstration of its abilities was a new all-wheel drive robotic mower, the Automower® 535 AWD. The unit is designed for professional use and manages 70% inclines and rough terrain, with zero direct emissions. It operates at 62 dB and manages lawn sizes of up to 3,500 square meters. The machine is also equipped with a remote object detection feature, Ultrasonic, which means it reduces its speed as soon as it senses a nearby object. Wheel brushes and a rubber bumper have also been added to the body.

Conference delegates were bussed out Baaken Hafen Park in Hamburg to watch the new machine at work on a very steep man-made grassed slope. The unit's all-wheel drive system and articulated steering coped with the conditions admirably.

Sascha Menges described the mower as "a game changer for professional lawn care." He said it enabled landscaping teams to work safer and smarter, whilst contributing to city health by reducing noise and carbon emission to minimum levels. The unit will be available in spring 2019.

Also demo-ed in the park was a new backpack battery blower, the 550iBTX. Described by the company as one of the first professional battery backpack blowers in the industry, it has close to zero vibrations due to an embedded fan system.

Pierre Lanquist, product manager electric at Husqvarna, said, "The performance of the 550iBTX is comparable to a 50cc petrol blower, but with benefits such as lower emissions, vibrations and sound levels. Compared to a petrol blower, it also reduces operational costs.”

Also previewed in Hamburg was a new Carbon Footprint Calculator addition to Fleet Services, the company's data-driven software system. Via machine sensors or built-in connectivity, the new calculator works out the carbon footprint from a landscaper's entire machinery fleet and gives them the tools to analyse trends over time and identify improvement areas. The carbon footprint is broken down into application area, product category, engine type and location.

“The new feature is developed for municipalities as well as landscaping teams, as the Carbon Footprint Calculator can help commercial users identify possibilities to further cut carbon emissions,”, said Jonas Willaredt, the company's sustainability director.

Finally, a vision of the future was presented with the delegates getting to see Husqvarna's design concept known as ZERO. Described as an "autonomous and sustainable green space solution", the concept combines robotic mowers with solar power, artificial intelligence, induction charging, virtual boundaries, and multiple sensors.

The idea of the system is that during the daytime, the solar-powered charging hub generates electricity from sunshine through photovoltaic cells. When low on energy, the robotic mowers automatically return to the charging hub, where they can be sealed in by sliding doors and recharged via induction charging plates. The LED light tubes on top of the solar hub provide by-passers with information about energy levels as well as creating an atmospheric glow during the night.

Rajinder Mehra, design director, at Husqvarna brand said, “To reduce cities’ carbon footprint, we have to explore new and untested ideas. Design concepts like Husqvarna concept ZERO, is a great catalyst that energises us to develop new people and planet friendly solutions."

Silent City proved once again to be an incredibly thought-provoking and fascinating two days for all who attended. Husqvarna should be applauded for organising a conference which is so much more than simply a vehicle to sell machinery. With their programme of speakers they have genuine intent to ignite a dialogue regarding how the future of green space management will need to evolve.

I'm sure the decision-makers who were in attendance, who have responsibility for the upkeep of our parks, will have left with some serious food-for-thought running through their minds - which will most likely influence their machinery purchasing decisions in the years to come.

Increases business from 3 to 5 branches

Olivers

Dealers purchase SOUTHERN Petworth in Sussex and WESTERN Winchester in Hampshire from CLAAS UK.

Following the purchase of Southern Harvesters at Reading in 2015, CLAAS UK Ltd and Oliver Agriculture Ltd (OLIVERS) have agreed to further extend their partnership, allowing the continued long-term growth of OLIVERS and the CLAAS brand from the Home Counties to the south coast.

On 1st October 2018, OLIVERS purchased the business activities of SOUTHERN Petworth in West Sussex and WESTERN Winchester in Hampshire, including the transfer of all 26 staff members in sales, service, parts, administration and management. This acquisition expands the OLIVERS business from 3 to 5 branches.

“We are delighted to continue to grow our business with CLAAS,” said David Jarman, MD of OLIVERS, “and we hope that our new customers in Sussex and Hampshire will appreciate the long term view we take to our service-focused business.

"OLIVERS have been serving farmers for nearly 200 years, and we intend to continue doing so for many years to come. This acquisition is a key part of our plan for continued growth.”

At the same time, SOUTHERN Ashford was acquired by CLAAS Manns Ltd and will be rebranded as MANNS Kent. CLAAS says the synergies of MANNS Kent with the six other MANNS locations, particularly MANNS Essex, and the Used Machinery Centre at Saxham will help and support the further growth of the Kent operation.

CLAAS Western will continue its successful growth from the four remaining locations in the company’s historical trading area, where it commands excellent market shares together with high customer respect for its service levels.

JOHN DEERE APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR AWARDS
48 young service technicians graduate

Allan Cochran presents the John Deere Ag Tech Apprentice of the Year award to Ewan Edwards of dealer RBM Agricultural Ltd

Four of the company’s apprentices won overall awards for the 2017 graduation year.

A total of 48 young service technicians have formally graduated from the latest John Deere Ag Tech, Parts Tech and Turf Tech advanced apprenticeship programmes, run in partnership with national training provider ProVQ.

John Deere hosted its annual apprentice graduation ceremony earlier this year in Germany, with the apprentices visiting the company’s cab factory and European Parts Distribution Centre in Bruchsal before being presented with their awards at the John Deere Forum in Mannheim.

Allan Cochran presents their awards to (clockwise from top left) John Deere Ag Tech Apprentice of the Year Ewan Edwards of dealer RBM Agricultural Ltd; Turf Tech Apprentice of the Year Sean Murphy of Charlies Groundcare; joint Parts Tech Apprentices of the Year Max Evans of Tallis Amos Group and Jack Norman of Masons Kings.

Four of the company’s apprentices won overall awards for the 2017 graduation year. Ewan Edwards of dealer RBM Agricultural Ltd, Louth was named Ag Tech Apprentice of the Year, for which he received a crystal plaque, a certificate and vouchers for workshop tools worth £250.

Sean Murphy of Charlies Groundcare in Newtown was awarded Turf Tech Apprentice of the Year and joint Parts Tech Apprentices of the Year were Max Evans of Tallis Amos Group in Bristol and Jack Norman of Masons Kings in Exebridge. All three also received a crystal plaque and certificate, and the same value vouchers.

The presentations were made by Deere & Company’s Region 2 training delivery manager Dr Lutz Schueppenhauer and John Deere Limited’s newly appointed branch training manager Allan Cochran.

John Deere’s three-year Ag Tech and Turf Tech and two-year Parts Tech apprenticeships lead to IMI Level 2 & 3 Diplomas in Landbased Engineering and Vehicle Parts Competence, and registration at LTA Intermediate level in the industry’s Landbased Training Accreditation scheme. In subsequent years qualified technicians undergo further education and adult training within the John Deere University programme, on a career path that can ultimately lead to the highest possible LTA Master Technician accreditation.

Now in its 26th year, Ag Tech was the first such scheme to be introduced in the UK and won a National Training Award at the end of 1997, the only one ever made to an agricultural machinery apprenticeship programme. Since the first programme started in 1992, well over 700 apprentices have graduated through the three main schemes and are now working in the company’s nationwide dealer network.

Allan Cochran took over the role of John Deere Limited branch training manager for the UK & Ireland from his predecessor Richard Halsall at the beginning of March, and works closely with training partner ProVQ on the John Deere apprenticeship programmes.

Allan joined the company in 1997 as a management trainee after completing an HND in mechanisation, planning and business management at SAC Auchincruive. His subsequent responsibilities have included sales demonstrator instructor for tractors, service training instructor, area manager product support for Scotland and then Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and product specialist for tractors and loaders.

In 2005 Allan was promoted to technical services manager and then senior product support specialist, and from 2009 he was technical support specialist for the tractor dealer technical assistance centre (DTAC) system and a harvesting customer support specialist.

Ariens Company, now referred to as AriensCo, has launched refreshed corporate branding.

In a statement the company said the new identity "celebrates its portfolio of global brands, building upon and protecting the company’s reputation, while separating its corporate efforts from its product brands." They go on to say of the logo that it personifies their "premium global presence while establishing the corporate enterprise with an identity of its own."

The re-branding also helps to differentiate between the corporate brand and product brands, specifically the Ariens® brand. Sometimes confused due to their shared name, colour palette and iconography, the new identity will prevent future confusion by establishing a "neutral, versatile and high-end feel with the company’s core values as the focus". The updated styling also uses textural images of distressed copper, concrete and steel that symbolise the company’s manufacturing heritage.

In operation since 1933, AriensCo began in rural Wisconsin when Henry Ariens and his three sons developed the first American-made rotary tiller. In 1960, the company manufactured its first snow blower, the Ariens Sno-Thro®.

Since then, AriensCo has ceated a portfolio of brands including Ariens®, Gravely®, Countax® and Westwood®. AriensCo has its UK and EMEAA headquarters based in Oxfordshire.

Trencher demo

Dealers Russell Group held a dedicated Ventrac demo recently which attracted in excess of 40 visitors from local landscape contractors, golf courses and a national hire company.

Russell Group recently held a Groundcare Demo Day at Stocksbridge Golf Club in Sheffield.

Organised by Glen Sawyer, Russell’s equipment sales manager based at their Rotherham depot, the dedicated Ventrac Demo Day attracted in excess of 40 visitors from local landscape contractors, golf courses and a national hire company.

Trencher demo

Five Ventrac 4500 compact tractors with a total of 13 different attachments were assembled at four stations. Visitors rotated between each station and were able to see each implement demonstrated and, in some cases, ride and drive the machines.

Implements and attachments demonstrated included four different mowing decks, two blowers, trencher, edger, Aera-vator, Power Broom, Power Rake and stump grinder. Also on demonstration and makings its UK debut was the new Boom Mower, to be officially launched at SALTEX at the end of October.

Commenting after the event Glen Sawyer said, “This was an excellent day and it certainly surpassed our expectations, It was a great effort from my team, the guys from Price Turfcare and the staff at Stocksbridge. Head greenkeeper Jamie Hobson was most accommodating allowing us to dig trenches, clear bracken and reshape the edges of his fairways and the guys driving the machines did a great job. Anyone who has visited Stocksbridge knows that it has some very steep slopes and the demo team certainly put the equipment through its paces.

Rupert Price, Managing Director of Ventrac’s UK importer Price Turfcare added, “I’ve been in this business for over 20 years and this was the most successful demo day I have ever attended. I am extremely grateful to Glen and his team; these events take a lot of time and effort to organise - it was a great day.”

SALTEX 2018
Pre-reg up & outdoor demos a sell out

The outdoor demonstrations feature at SALTEX 2018 has completely sold out

Event organisers have reported a significant increase in pre-show visitor registration ahead of SALTEX 2018, which takes place at The NEC, Birmingham on 31 October - 01 November.

Event organisers have reported a significant increase in pre-show visitor registration ahead of SALTEX 2018, which takes place at The NEC, Birmingham on 31 October – 01 November.

It certainly is encouraging times for the show which will be celebrating its 73rd anniversary. Since moving to the NEC, the show has grown steadily in terms of exhibitors, floor space and visitor numbers and current figures for this year appear to hint towards SALTEX 2018 continuing the trend.

Visitor pre-registration for 2018 is at an all-time high with current figures 11% up on last year which reflects not only the quality of the show but also how accessible the NEC is. In the post-show survey, SALTEX 2017 attendees said that the venue, and convenient dates were key reasons behind their decisions to attend the FREE event. Located in the centre of the UK, whether you are travelling from overseas or within the UK, the NEC is easy to get to by car, rail or air.

Visitors from 41 different countries have already registered for SALTEX 2018. The majority will be travelling to the NEC from various parts in Europe but according to pre-registration data there will also be a large proportion of visitors attending SALTEX from as far as the likes of Australia, the USA, Japan, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia – to name but a few.

Visitors will no doubt be looking forward to an impressive line-up of world-class innovation from over 300 exhibitors on the show floor. In addition to the wide range of innovative products on display within the indoor environment, visitors to SALTEX will have the chance to see many of these in action through the outdoor demonstrations which will be taking place on a grass area directly outside the SALTEX halls 6,7 and 8.

In fact, the outdoor demonstrations feature at SALTEX 2018 has completely sold out with a high number of exhibitors choosing to take outdoor plots.

This year, visitors can expect to see the latest line marking technology as demonstrated by Rigby Taylor, Intelligent Marking and Fleet Line Markers; Groundwater Dynamics will be showcasing equipment which helps deal with flooding and standing water issues; Skarper will be featuring their fabulous array of wood chippers and idverde will be constructing a mini football pitch consisting of Mixto reinforced natural hybrid turf.
