FEEDING A BASIC PSYCHE
Shows go along way to filling a growning void

Chris Biddle
We cannot compete with the imminent closing of the transfer market where speculation has filled the papers for weeks, but nonetheless there is always a frisson of anticipation and excitement ahead of a new season launch pad like SALTEX next week.

Many suppliers like to keep their powder dry ahead of the event, and a number have already flagged up that they have surprises in store. The leading distributors play a much more prominent role these days with the likes of Handy celebrating their 75th with a massive prize draw alongside new products, Henton & Chattell debuting their new distributorship of Billy Goat and Rochfords who are due to unveil new AL-Ko models and take a much bigger presence.

Elsewhere, there will be interest in the new Hyundai range from Genpower, Lely who will be there with Solo and Tym Tractors this year, Polaris with its new Brutus range and Barrus as they continue to enhance the role of the Cub Cadet in their line-up.

Old favourites, new favourites, plenty to see, plenty to do, people to ‘ear-wig’, swap experiences, chill-out, take a day or two away from the coal-face.

As we become more reliant on remote communication, on shopping on-line, so the basic need to mix and mingle with others remains rooted in our psyche.

It is of course a challenge that faces planners as they try to retain the fabric of town centres, replacing closed shops with different options for people to gather.

So we hope for good weather, we hope for a good crowd - and of course, we will be revealing the results of our Heritage Awards next Tuesday alongside a full programme of show and apres-show events.
