Scottish trainee greenkeeper Chris Divers, 20, has died after the van he was travelling in was in collision with a pick-up truck in North Carolina. Chris had travelled to the US to study greenkeeping at college but was due to return in October when his partner, Gemma Kelly, was due to give birth to their first child.
Within hours of learning of his death Gemma began raising money to allow Christopher's parents Gary and Clare to fly to the States to bring their son's body home. Pitchcare has donated a sizeable sum to allow Chris's parents to fly to the States.
Chris's dad Gary, 45, is head greenkeeper at Crow Wood golf course in Muirhead near Glasgow, and spoke of his devastation, saying he had lost "his pal". The pair had worked together at Loch Lomond Golf Course. He said: "He was the centre of the family. It's devastating. They were on their way home from a training day. They were at a junction, when they pulled up and were hit from the side"
"He had been studying green keeping at college. He was supposed to stay out longer but then they found out he was going to be a dad."
Chris's parents are still in the UK finalising all the paperwork before travelling over to the USA to repatriate their son. Gary Divers commented, via Crow Wood Golf Club, that he has been overwhelmed by the support shown from the industry.
