EQUIPMENT THEFT INCREASES
What can dealers do to help customers?
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs

NFU Mutual have released their latest data on machinery theft from farms, which has doubled in March compared with the same month in 2016.

In what has been a thoroughly miserable week, I'm sorry to dwell on another depressing subject, but it's one which unfortunately persists in the outdoor power equipment industry - theft.

Agricultural insurers NFU Mutual have released their latest rural crime claims data which reveal that the cost of farm theft claims doubled in March compared with the same month in 2016, to more than £800,000.

Tim Price, the insurance firm’s rural affairs specialist was quoted in the Eastern Daily Press saying, “The sharp (national) rise comes after months when theft claims remained broadly static - largely due to increased security measures taken by farmers to protect their tractors and quads.

We’re currently drilling down into the figures to get a clear picture of what is behind the increase - but it’s already clear that the theft of a small number of very high-value tractors stolen with attached implements are responsible for around £200,000 of the month’s theft claims bill."

According to NFU Mutual, Quad and ATV thefts continue to make up the largest number of agricultural vehicle claims that they have to deal with. "Thieves are continually finding new ways of getting round security devices," Tim Price said, "and are also staking-out farms to find opportunities when quads can be stolen with little chance of them being spotted and challenged."

At this busy time of the year for farmers NFU Mutual believe that thieves are touring the countryside looking for opportunities to steal - so they are stressing to users just how important it is to secure quads whenever they are not in use.

With determined criminals there is of course a limit to what equipment owners can actually do to protect their property. Manufacturers including John Deere and Suzuki now use the Datatag powered CESAR system at source - factory fitting the security marking technology to Gators and ATVs.

Co-incidentally this week, dealers E Buckland Garden Machinery contacted us at Service Dealer to say how they, like a lot of other machinery dealers, have seen an increase in theft from customers properties recently.

As a result of such an incident Bucklands were visited by a local police officer, who during the conversation mentioned a scheme to record serial numbers on a dedicated website - www.immobilise.com.

Rich from Bucklands told us that they always record serial numbers on invoices and paperwork, but they have now begun suggesting to owners that they may want to register their equipment on the Immobilise site themselves.

In terms of what dealers can actually do to in the fight against equipment theft, advising customers to consider this scheme seems like a practical step.

It certainly can't hurt.

If you have any tips which you give your customers to protect their equipment from thieves, please feel free to share in the comments below.

MTD MERGES WITH F. ROBOTICS ACQUISITIONS LTD
Robomow brand to be continued by MTD

Robomow
From July the Israeli company F. Robotics Acquisitions Ltd. will be operating under the umbrella of US company MTD.

From July 2017, the Israeli company F. Robotics Acquisitions Ltd. will be operating under the umbrella of US company MTD - this will include the Robomow brand, adding specialist expertise to the company.

Founded in 1995 in Pardesiya, Israel, F. Robotics Acquisitions Ltd. has over 22 years’ experience in developing and manufacturing robotic lawn mowers. Through this merger, MTD said in a statement they aim to use the specialist’s technology for developing the entire MTD brand portfolio in Europe and the USA. They also said they aim build on this expertise in robotic lawn mowers over the long term. As such, the Robomow brand will be continued by MTD and integrated into its existing international portfolio.

“Both MTD and Robomow see tremendous opportunities to grow our brands through this merger of our products and talents,” said Rob Moll, CEO, MTD Products. “Initially, we will be looking to market Robomow technology under our Cub Cadet and WOLF-Garten brands. At the same time, we expect the Robomow brand to profit from MTD’s global reach and presence.”

E P Barrus Ltd., UK sales and distributor for MTD’s portfolio, welcomes the integreation of the technology under the Cub Cadet and WOLF-Garten brands, and the union of expertise in robotic lawn mowers over the long term.

Service Dealer spoke to Mower Magic who have been handling the Robomow machines in the UK, who told us that there will be no immediate change in their role. They will certainly be handling the machines for the rest of this season they said - and talks will commence soon to see about their future role, which Mower Magic hope to be on-going.

MTD say that posting annual increases of over 30 per cent, the European robotic technology for residential and small garden use segment is already an established growth market. The worldwide market volume for robotic technology currently totals 1.6 billion euros. “Boosting demand in the North American market and gaining additional global market share are among the goals MTD will be pursuing going forward”, Rob Moll explained

Following the merger with MTD, the headquarters of F. Robotics Acquisitions Ltd. will remain in Pardesiya, Israel. Business operations will continue to be overseen by the existing management team and will be supported by MTD divisions in Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific with regard to achieving growth and innovation goals.

“For the last 22 years we have been focused on developing innovative technologies and leading robotic mowing products. We are excited to see this investment reach its full potential in the market via MTD’s leading brands and distribution,” stated Udi Peless, CEO, F. Robotics. Both companies have industry-wide reputations for innovation in the fast-moving lawn mower and outdoor power equipment markets.

Since its founding in 1995, F. Robotics Acquisitions Ltd. has brought to market six generations of rechargeable robotic lawn mowers for residential use.

With the acquisition of F. Robotics Acquisitions Ltd., MTD has completed its now fourth takeover since 2015. The companies CORE Outdoor Power (CORE), Precise Path Robotics and ATT were acquired by MTD since 2015.

E.P BARRUS TO EXPAND
Moving to 16-acre site

Barrus are moving to a new 16-acre site
Company is relocating, enabling them to consolidate operations under one roof, and remain in Bicester, Oxfordshire.

After a seven-year search, E.P. Barrus Ltd, distributor of lawn and garden brands in the UK including Cub Cadet, Lawnflite, WOLF-Garten, Wilkinson Sword and Energizer, has found a new site.

Barrus will be relocating to a 16-acre site, enabling the company to consolidate its operations under one roof, and remain in Bicester, Oxfordshire. The site forms part of the commercial space located on the edge of the Graven Hill Development to the south of Bicester, formerly owned by the MoD.

L-R: Keryn Clarke, Director of Operations, E. P. Barrus Ltd, Andrew Feilden, Non-Executive Director, E.P. Barrus Ltd, Robert Muir, Managing Director, E. P. Barrus Ltd, Robert Glen, Chairman, E.P. Barrus Ltd, Karen Curtin, Managing Director, Graven Hill Village Development Company, Councillor Ian Corkin, Councillor Lynn Pratt, Tara Glen, Non-Executive Director, E. P. Barrus Ltd

In addition to the familiar household garden brands, Barrus markets and distributes its products across a wide range of other sectors including marine and industrial.

Barrus originally moved from London to Bicester in 1977, choosing the site for its central location.

“We are delighted to announce our exciting relocation plans in this, our centennial year,” commented Robert Muir, Managing Director, E. P. Barrus Ltd. “Our growth plans have been constrained by the size of our premises here in Launton Road and it has always been our intention to expand if possible our business within the Oxfordshire area.”

As a major employer in the town, Barrus say they have maintained a commitment to recruiting local people and have developed long-term relationships with Oxfordshire schools, colleges and universities offering work experience placements and apprenticeships to young engineering students. Many of these students have taken up a career in engineering and have become long-standing Barrus employees.

“We are looking forward to the beginning of a new and exciting chapter for Barrus, and integrating into the new village community within the innovative, Graven Hill Development,” Mr Muir continues. “In addition to securing the future of our existing, loyal workforce, I am confident that we will be creating more job opportunities over the next few years in support of our long-term, strategic business growth. As our centennial strapline states, ‘We are celebrating our first 100-years, gearing up for the next'.”

It is anticipated that Barrus will occupy the new site in 2019 when the Phase 2 land transfer from MoD to Graven Hill is due to complete. Barrus is working with Graven Hill Village Development Company to see if it is possible to secure earlier occupancy.

HUSQVARNA OFFER ROBOTIC TRAINING
To dealers around the country

Husqvarna Automower
Manufacturer aiming to upskill and help educate dealers on the selling points of the Automower for the end user.

Recently Husqvarna have put resources behind the training of dealers in its robotic product, in order to upskill and help educate them on the selling points of the Automower for the end user.

The training came in two formats; basic and advanced, and the company says it proved successful in a number of locations.

Basic Automower training consisted of:

  • Understanding how Husqvarna Automower works
  • A live installation demonstration
  • Installation examples
  • Basic servicing
  • Using Autocheck
  • Testing
  • How to access all necessary documentation

Training sessions took place in: Harlow, Bath, Chesterfield, Edinburgh and Coleraine. Due to popular demand one more session is to be arranged soon.

Advanced training consisted of a more in-depth look at the market and how robotics are tested and benchmarked. This training took place at Husqvarna’s UK headquarters in Newton Aycliffe and covered:

  • A factory tour to see Husqvarna Automower® being manufactured
  • Advanced installation examples
  • Advanced setting examples
  • Using Autocheck
  • How we test and benchmark Automower
  • Market overview
  • Cable break finding
  • Dealer Q & A session

Due to the success of the training sessions, the company say they will be exploring more opportunities next year to educate dealers in the benefits of the Automower.

Husqvarna UK Sales and Marketing Director, Ken Brewster said, "The basic training provided an insight to those who had perhaps had only minimal involvement with Automower in the past allowing them to get a solid understanding of its benefits. The advanced training on the other hand really dove deeper into the marketplace and the opportunities for dealers to thrive with our robotic product.

"We’re pleased with the feedback we’ve received and will be looking to hold further sessions in the future.”

GGP UK Ltd has appointed Will Timmis in a new role as Ecommerce & Key Account Manager.

The company says Will will be responsible for managing and developing the mass market channel of national accounts supported by Duncan Martin. In addition he will support both pure-play online garden machinery retailers and traditional trade outlets with online presence, in improving product optimisation and developing market leading marketing assets to support products across the group’s brands Mountfield, Atco, Alpina and Stiga.

Will studied Business & Finance at Worcester before starting his career in sales and category management in the timber sector from construction to log cabins, joinery and timber garden products. In the last four years Will has gained significant experience in online retailing having held a senior management role in e-commerce, purchasing and category management for a market leading independent online retailer in the gardening sector.

Will said, "I am naturally delighted GGP have chosen me for this role, not only are they a terrific team but their passion and dedication to making the best decisions for their customers, the user/consumer is inspiring!

"Unlike most of the GGP sales team, my career has not grown through the garden power tool industry but I am a keen gardener and lawn care enthusiast which started when I was ten years old behind a Webb 24” earing pocket money in my summer holidays – I still have the Webb, every mower since and have collected a few extras too!"

Duncan Martin, GGP md said, "We are very pleased to add Will to the team, he brings a wealth of real world online retailing and key account management to GGP.

"The garden machinery market is evolving at a pace. It is important for GGP to keep pace with the developing market and help all of our customers to adapt as quickly and effectively as possible so the customer finds GGP products and retailers first."
SWARDMAN CHOOSE KAWASAKI
For international mower launch

Founder of Swardman Tomáš Šena with the company's Edwin cylinder mower
Czech manufacturer Swardman have launched their Edwin cylinder mower, powered by Kawasaki’s FJ100D 4-stroke petrol engine, to the international market.

Czech manufacturer Swardman have launched their Edwin cylinder mower, powered by Kawasaki’s FJ100D 4-stroke petrol engine, to the international market for the first time.

The move follows two years of strong sales in Central Europe for Swardman and investment in a new production facility, following Edwin’s introduction to the Czech Republic in October 2014.

Founded by Tomáš Šena in 2013, Swardman say their mission is to build "the best lawn mower in the world for home use". The Edwin is the result of Tomáš’s life-long passion for perfectly cut lawns and followed two decades of experience in the turfcare industry.

“My early experience as a greenkeeper and then as a dealer for two British lawnmower companies taught me how to grow and maintain the perfect English garden lawn”, comments Tomáš. “We started developing mower prototypes in 2011, putting this experience into practice and with the sole aim of helping everyone who wants to achieve a perfect lawn.”

The result is the Edwin mower which the company says offers a precision cut, easy operation, minimal maintenance costs and a high level of personalisation available – including a choice of over 200 powder coated paint finishes, leather handlebars and carbon fibre cowling.

“We strive to develop and produce precisely manufactured and personalised mowers” continues Tomáš, “We are probably the only lawnmower maker which allows customers to configure the mower according to their wishes”.

Part of Swardman’s precision development was their choice of Kawasaki’s FJ100D 4-stroke single cylinder petrol engine. Introduced to the company by Kawasaki Engines Czech Distributor Asko KC, the professional quality engine was chosen for it’s perfect size to power ratio for Edwin’s requirements. “Kawasaki’s renowned reliability, easy starting and low noise levels also convinced us that the FJ100D was right for us”, adds Tomáš, “We can now proudly say that Swardman produces the quietest lawnmower on the market, something that is widely noted and preferred by our customers.”

Commenting on the collaboration, Richard Harris, Business Development Manager at Kawasaki’s European Engine Division added, “We are proud to power such a superbly engineered product - in design as well as in looks. Congratulations to Tomáš and the rest of the Swardman team for bringing such an original product to the lawncare market.”

The Edwin mower can be configured and purchased from Swardman’s website. All mowers are shipped for free within Europe and customers can book a free demonstration in their garden by a local representative as well as find their closest Swardman partner for after-season servicing.

CLAAS TO BUILD NEW TEST CENTRE
Seven-figure investment at the site in Harsewinkel

CLAAS is significantly increasing its testing capacities for the development of new agricultural machinery by building a new centre at its site in Harsewinkel.

CLAAS is significantly increasing its testing capacities for the development of new agricultural machinery by building a new centre at its site in Harsewinkel.

By the time it’s completed in autumn 2018, total investment in the new centre will be over 15 million euros.

An impression of what the new test centre will look like

"We will merge the test laboratories at our Harsewinkel site into the new test centre; it will also enable us to expand our capacities and lower the dependency of our testing cycles on the harvest schedules", says Oliver Westphal, head of validation at CLAAS.

The test centre will be able to simulate a broad variety of climactic conditions encountered during harvests around the world. These simulations help the engineers to assess the performance capabilities and reliability of the machinery at an early stage of its development.

The new centre will be equipped to test components for combine harvesters, forage harvesters and tractors. "We exclusively test the functions and durability of the components in our machines. They are becoming increasingly complex while at the same time needing to satisfy an increasingly large raft of statutory requirements", explains Westphal. "We do not test the quality of harvest flow here; there are other test facilities responsible for that."

The new test centre will be state-of-the-art. "We will use 300 kilowatt electric drive units instead of diesel engines to test the transmission components", adds Ulrich Elfers, project manager in charge of construction.

The new test centre will also satisfy modern standards of energy efficiency. For instance, a heat recovery process will be installed into the test systems, so that a conventional heating system will not be necessary in winter, while a water system with heat exchangers fitted to the underfloor radiators will provide cooling in summer.

The building will have total floor space of roughly 8,000 m², of which half will be used for assembly, the laboratories and the actual test facilities. Adjacent to these areas will be over 200 workstations for test engineers and developers, as well as additional facilities containing the technical supply systems.

SERVICE SUPPORT STRENGTHENED
At Amazone UK

Oliver Watson and Chris Wilson
To support end users and the dealer network, Amazone UK have recruited two new faces to the service team, one in the field and one office-based.

Amazone Ltd has strengthened its service team, both in the field and within its in-house product support.

The first of the new-starters is Chris Wilson who joins the company as Territory Area Service Manager for Northern England & Scotland.

Oliver Watson meanwhile takes up a new, office-based role in Harworth, Doncaster.

Oliver Watson and Chris Wilson

Chris Wilson, who will cover from Northern England up to the Scottish Isles, started out in farm machinery by doing his apprenticeship in the workshops at one of Scotland’s biggest Amazone dealers. After completing his qualifications, Chris went off to the sharp end to sample some practical farming having five years on a mixed livestock and arable farm. After a short spell back in the dealer trade carrying out demonstrations and installations, Chris then went on to perform a similar role to his new position with the UK arm of another European machinery manufacturer where he stayed for 16 years before taking a year or two out of the trade.

With this background, Chris joins the company with a plethora of experience in the world of agricultural machinery and, with his strong knowledge of electronics and high-tech kit, is able to offer a top level of support to Amazone customers in conjunction with their long-established dealer network.

Oliver Watson, a qualified sprayer operator, studied agriculture to degree-level, and has gained substantial experience of arable farming. His time pre-Amazone included a spell with a local Amazone dealer before resuming his studies.

Steve Clark, after-sales manager at Amazone says of Oliver’s appointment, "As the kit in the field becomes increasingly complex, this new role, based here in the service office at Harworth, is designed to broaden the level of support to both the end user as well as underpinning the level of knowledge of the nationwide dealer network. He will also give backroom support to the Amazone field service team."

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has unveiled its new vehicle at the Balmoral Show, supplied by Johnston Gilpin & Co Ltd of Lisburn.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officially unveiled its new, specially liveried crime prevention demonstration vehicle at the 149th Balmoral Show at Balmoral Park in Lisburn, Co Antrim recently.

The four-track John Deere Gator utility vehicle was nicknamed the ‘Copagator’ after a Facebook campaign invited the public to come up with a special call sign for it during the build-up to the show.

PSNI superintendent Sean Wright takes the keys of the specially liveried John Deere Gator utility vehicle (aka the Copagator) from Randal McConnell of John Deere dealer Johnston Gilpin & Co (right), with Constable Ricky Taylor (left) looking on

Supplied by John Deere agricultural & turf dealer Johnston Gilpin & Co Ltd of Lisburn, who also exhibited at the event, the Gator was helping to promote the PSNI’s fight against rural and agricultural crime. Crime Prevention Officers (CPOs) were on hand throughout the show to provide guidance and advice to visitors on protecting farms, businesses, homes, property and equipment.

“Tackling crime against the rural community is important to the police,” said Supt Brian Kee. “We understand the effect these crimes have on these communities and the grave impact they can have on farmers’ livelihoods. Our strategy is to work with partner agencies and commercial stakeholders to identify ways of preventing crime, as well as targeting and arresting those committing such offences.

“We are particularly pleased to be working as part of the Rural Crime Partnership (RCP) to spread the message about crime prevention and reporting suspicious activity, and bring forward recommendations and initiatives to combat rural criminality.”

Johnston Gilpin’s managing director Randal McConnell said: “John Deere is now fitting Datatag’s CESAR security marking system as standard on all XUV and HPX Gator utility vehicle models sold in the UK & Ireland, as a way of protecting against theft, recovering stolen equipment and reducing insurance premiums. We are very happy to support the PSNI in this way to help their efforts to prevent crime in the countryside.”

DRIVING A DEERE FOR DEMENTIA
From John O’Groats to Land’s End

Andy and Kathryn Maxfield are planning to break the Guinness World Record for driving from John O’Groats to Land’s End on a lawn tractor, while also raising money for Alzheimer’s Society
HMP Kirkham prison officer Andy Maxfield from Inskip in Lancashire is aiming to break a six year old Guinness World Record while raising money for Alzheimer’s Society.

HMP Kirkham prison officer Andy Maxfield from Inskip in Lancashire is aiming to break a six year old Guinness World Record by driving from John O’Groats to Land’s End on a John Deere lawn tractor, while raising money for Alzheimer’s Society.

Andy and his daughter Kathryn are planning to drive non-stop to break the record, which stands at four days and 23 hours. They will be using a standard 24hp X950R lawn tractor (less the rear collection system and mower deck) and support vehicles provided by John Deere. The X950R has cruise control and a top road speed of 10mph, and will also be equipped with a GPS tracker to qualify for the record.

L-R: John Deere Limited turf division manager Chris Meacock, Andy and Kathryn Maxfield, and Alzheimer’s Society regional community fundraising officer Sue Swire.

The ‘Driving the Distance for Dementia’ Challenge is due to set off from John O’Groats at 10am on Tuesday 25th July 2017; the traditional distance by road to Land’s End is 874 miles. The planned route goes past the family home in Inskip, where Andy Maxfield spends much of his spare time cutting the grass in public open spaces around the village.

Andy and Kathryn will also be supported by Andy’s wife Karen and their other daughter Kaitlyn, a college student who will be blogging and taking videos and photographs of the challenge along the route.

There is a family history of Alzheimer’s, as it affects Andy’s 77 year old father James and James’ mother Theresa was also diagnosed with the condition. “I started thinking about fundraising ideas towards the end of last year, when my dad was going downhill quite quickly,” says Andy Maxfield. “It was my birthday in January, so I asked people to make donations to charity instead of giving me presents, and it’s gone on from there.

“I then had the idea of a fundraising ball to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society, which will be held on Saturday December 9th at Preston Masonic Hall. Alongside that, because friends and neighbours in the village often take the mickey out of me for being into lawnmowers - I’ve got eight altogether - I just thought it would be appropriate to choose a lawn tractor for the record breaking attempt.

“I asked John Deere, although I don’t have one of their mowers at home, as I know they make quality products and I wanted something to get me from A to B without breaking down!”

John Deere Limited turf division manager Chris Meacock adds: “Our UK and Ireland employees select a specific charity each year to support with a variety of fundraising activities. By coincidence we had chosen Alzheimer’s Society when we were approached by Andy Maxfield to help with the Guinness World Record attempt, so it was very good timing on his part!

“We are delighted to back this very worthy cause and are looking forward to the challenge. In addition to providing the X950R for ‘Driving the Distance for Dementia’, we have offered Andy a new X350R lawn tractor worth over £5000 as a special raffle prize for the family’s charity ball in December.”

Sue Swire, regional community fundraising officer for Alzheimer’s Society in Lancashire, says: “We are so grateful to Andrew and his daughter Kathryn, who are taking on such a great challenge to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society to unite against dementia. Dementia devastates lives, but dementia won’t win. Funds raised from the challenge will help us move a step closer to a world without dementia.”

AND FINALLY . . .
Pair jailed for smuggling tonne of drugs in lawnmower shipment

The drugs were shipped in a crate containing a lawnmower
Two men who used shipments of lawnmowers to smuggle more than a tonne of ecstasy, cannabis and ketamine into the UK have been jailed for 14 years.

Two men who used shipments of lawnmowers to smuggle more than a tonne of ecstasy, cannabis and ketamine into the UK have been jailed for 14 years.

The BBC reported that Derek Maguire, 55, and Neil Snazel, 42, both of Manchester, worked together to bring the Class A and Class B drugs in 15 crates from the Netherlands.

The drugs were smuggled in 15 shipments, which were all labelled 'Machinery'

Maguire's nephew, daughter and her boyfriend, all from Manchester, were then employed to distribute the drugs.

All five were sentenced at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.

Maguire, 55, of Harbury Crescent, Manchester, was found guilty of eight charges concerning the production, possession and supply of drugs.

Snazel, 42, of Kenworthy Lane, Manchester, was jailed for 14 years after admitting three similar offences.

The pair were caught after Thames Valley Police seized a crate addressed to a courier in October 2015 and found a lawnmower containing 175lbs (80kg) of MDMA - the active ingredient in ecstasy pills.

The Manchester Evening News said that Snazel arranged for drugs to be smuggled into the UK from the Netherlands in at least 15 shipments of machinery over a four-month period.

It was only in October 2015, when a shipment was held up by problems in the Channel Tunnel, that the conspiracy was uncovered.

A freight company in Slough was dealing with a lorry which had collected a pallet shipped from a company in Holland.

Because the curtain on the side of the lorry had been slashed, staff decided to check the load.

On inspection of a crate, they found a box containing a lawnmower with a hidden compartment containing 76 black packages.

Testing revealed they contained £2m of extremely high purity MDMA - ecstasy.

The packages had been addressed to a courier business in Stockport.

In November National Crime Agency officers identified 14 similar deliveries to the address made between July and October 2015 whose labels indicate Snazel had shipped 1,033kg of drugs into the country with a potential street value of between £20m and £25m.
