FORECAST NEWS
Gaining a competitive advantage
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs

Steve Gibbs

With online sales surging last month, specialist dealers need to react quickly to changing conditions such as the weather, to continue to offer a true, competitive alternative.

You may notice we're running a Weather Watch feature again today - giving the general forecast for the week ahead and looking back at some historical weather facts for this week in years gone by.

If you would like an up to date forecast for your specific area, you can head over to the brand new Service Dealer website and pop your location details into the fancy widget on there. Every time you then return to the site, you'll get a current forecast tailored for you.

Why this fixation on the weather? Well, it's the way it always has been for this sector. It's kind of a cliché, but certainly a truism, that the quality of a season is dictated much more on the weather, rather than the current economic or political situation the country finds itself in.

However, what I'm not saying is there's only one type of weather that's guaranteed for a cracking period of sales. When I insinuated something along those lines recently I received a very well-articulated comment from a dealer reader saying, "I appreciate that for many dealers their bread and butter is most definitely grass cutting equipment. But I think it is worth pointing out that all weathers provide opportunity for dealers to solve different problems. Especially for commercial customers.

"There are many applications for outdoor power tools that do not involve cutting grass at all, and where the dire weather actually represents a great opportunity to sell other machines; forestry, hard surface maintenance, snow and ice removal and highway maintenance are all markets that actually improve when the weather is adverse.

"With so much opportunity in every season should a dealer really place all his hope on a small weather dependent grass season?"

A very eloquently phrased argument and one which I certainly wouldn't want to argue against. What we can take from it though, is that arming oneself with knowledge of weather patterns can be of great benefit to specialist dealers. The ability to react quickly to changing conditions is a privilege which the independent sector enjoys over the mass channels.

And it's a privilege which certainly needs to be taken advantage of by bricks and mortar retailers to make sure they continue to position themselves as a true alternative to online purchasing.

This seems more important than ever going by the most recent statistics for online sales in the UK. According to the latest figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, UK online retail sales grew by an impressive +18.9% year-on-year in March. This apparently marks the highest year-on-year growth since November 2016.

The analysts cite a number of key factors as helping drive the month’s online sales - interestingly starting with the continued cold weather from the ’beast from the east’ and ending with the early Easter bank holiday. Weekly analysis showed that growth doubled in the final week over Easter - surging from a steady +13% to +27%.

Andy Mulcahy, who is a strategy and insight director at IMRG, says, “It’s possible to read this month’s results as a simple story of online continuing to benefit from the decline of the high street - which is nothing new of course, but it may be that we are seeing an acceleration of this as we’ve moved into 2018.

"At the same time it could just be a blip - Easter falling in March will likely have pushed up online growth (and, by extension, it may come in far lower in April) plus the weather has at times brought heavy snowfall and prolonged rainfall."

So whilst the analysts can't offer a solid reason as to why there has been this surge recently, or indeed how sustained it might be, all dealers will know that online sales are presenting a clear and present danger to physical retail spaces who are not switched on to the competition.

Therefore, every play in the book which sets apart expert, servicing dealers from box-pushers on the internet, must be readily employed. Reacting to changing weather conditions can be just one of these tools which can offer an advantage.

MORRIS CORFIELD OPEN NEW BRANCH
Purpose-built facility near Hereford

Morris Corfield's new Hereford branch

One of the west of England’s largest agricultural machinery dealership’s, Morris Corfield, has opened a new purpose-built branch near Hereford.

One of the west of England’s largest agricultural machinery dealership’s, Morris Corfield has opened a new purpose-built branch near Hereford.

The family owned business is a main agent for CLAAS, and one of their longest established dealerships having sold their first CLAAS machine, a trailed SUPER 500 combine, in 1963. Based at Broseley in Shropshire, Morris Corfield employs over 60 people working out of four branches serving the west of England and Welsh borders.

The new Hereford branch at Ocle Pychard is on a prominent site alongside the main A465 Bromyard to Hereford road. The new development makes this new branch one of the most modern dealerships in the region and has been built to replace the dealer's far smaller Docklow premises near Bromyard, which the company had outgrown.

“We have been looking for the right site for a number of years. This site really is ideal in all respects and will enable us to provide our customers with a far better service,” says managing director Norman Duppa. “Its location will make it far more accessible for customers but will also be logistically easier for us. Just as importantly it gives us a purpose-built building that provides our staff with a bright, modern work environment, which is important if we are provide the level of service our customers expect.”

The new branch sits on a 2 acre site, providing plenty of space for the display and storage of machinery. In addition to offices and a sizeable shop area, stocking a wide range of tools, clothing and agricultural sundries, the new 80 x 100 ft building also incorporates a far larger parts storage area than at Docklow and a 5-bay workshop, capable of easily accommodating the largest CLAAS machinery.

Looking forward, a further benefit of the site is the availability of good, high speed broadband. This is not only necessary for everyday communication, but essential for online parts ordering systems and the future use of cutting-edge remote diagnostics of CLAAS machinery which is being adopted by Morris Corfield.

“I wish Morris Corfiled every success with their new Hereford branch,” says Trevor Tyrrell, CEO of CLAAS UK. “As one of our largest and long established family-owned dealerships, this investment is testament to their commitment both to the service and support they offer their customers, but also to their own staff. It is a great statement by the company in its future growth and is to be congratulated.

AGCO ACADEMY APPRENTICES COLLECT AWARDS
Continual development is key

The recent AGCO Academy graduates

11 AGCO Agricultural Engineering Apprentices and Parts Apprentices were recognised during a lavish awards ceremony.

A focus on continued professional development and career progression was the key message as 11 AGCO apprentices collected their awards having successfully completed the industry focused courses during a lavish presentation and dinner at the Forest of Arden Hotel, near Birmingham.

In the 18th year of AGCO’s industry recognised dealer apprenticeship scheme, in partnership with WCG (formerly known as Warwickshire College Group), the award ceremony was combined with presentations for the Vehicle Parts apprenticeship programme, run in conjunction with Reaseheath College in Cheshire.

The recent AGCO Academy graduates

Independent consultant, and author of engineering apprenticeship programmes across many industries including motorsport, aerospace and agriculture, David Kirschner welcomed apprentices and guests to the event by congratulating the recently qualified engineers on their career choice.

“This industry provides one of the best engineering apprenticeship schemes, providing the foundations to build your career.” Mr Kirschner explained. “But, your learning experience has only just begun.

“Agriculture is a vital industry supplying food for this country, and we will always need food. Therefore, with the right work ethic, job security will never be an issue. I have learnt that there is not one machine man can’t damage!”

Mr Kirschner continued to explain the importance to the industry of bringing in fresh, young talent with new ideas, and the need to treat this juncture as a stepping stone to continued learning and development. He noted how industry, and AGCO in particular, recognise the important contribution apprentices make to agriculture.

“The standard cost to bring a new apprentice through is £75,000. That is how much is invested, so it demonstrates the value and significance of apprenticeships,” said Mr Kirschner.

The awards were presented by William Judge, the Massey Ferguson National Sales Manager for UK & Ireland, and once again saw success for AGCO dealer B&B Tractors, as Bradley Smith became the third employee in a row to collect the Apprentice of the Year award.

Luke McDaid, who works at the Attleborough branch of Thurlow Nunn Standen Ltd (TNS) received the Most Improved Apprentice of the Year, while Jack Huckstep of Lister Wilder of Wallingborough, Oxfordshire was voted Apprentices Apprentice of the Year by his fellow peers.

Mary Wallbank was awarded the Best Parts Apprentice of the Year, commenting, “Completing the AGCO apprenticeship has really helped me deepen my knowledge in the agricultural industry but also enabled me to establish new links within the industry itself, this has been a huge benefit in my current job but also will help when it comes to moving forward in my career.”

Mary was joined by Antony Hempstead of Chandlers Farm Equipment in Belton, Grantham, as he also collected his Parts Apprentice Award.

Tim Hutchinson, course leader of the AGCO apprenticeship scheme at WCG commented, “One of the key benefits of the scheme and the course is that it is a combined effort. The apprentices on the course want to succeed and they can see a clear career path. Their dealerships and AGCO therefore equally benefit from committed and skilled technicians joining their teams at the end of their training.”

Recognising the achievements of all of the apprentices, Mr Hutchinson commented, “It is a pleasure to celebrate this day with all of the award winners, as well as the individual prize winners. It is not always about being top of the class academically, but engaging in the apprenticeship and bringing new skill-sets into the workplace and your dealership. Although we have three individual prize winners, everyone can take great pride in their achievements. But remember, the learning process has only just begun.”

The agricultural engineers’ apprenticeship scheme combines classroom and workshop-based training at WCG’s Moreton Morrell campus, with practical on-going training at the apprentices’ dealership.

Reaseheath College’s Vehicle Parts apprenticeship is a three-year programme, and a partnership between learner, employer and the college. Each apprentice attends college at regular intervals on a block-release basis combined with training in the workplace. During the programme the apprentices will have access to a range of opportunities to help them gain the experience, skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the industry.

Jacqui Harvey, business development officer at Reaseheath College said, “We have had the pleasure of working in partnership with AGCO over the last five years and have celebrated the success of many apprentices to include Mary and Antony this year.

“We would like to wish both Mary and Antony well as they progress and move forward with their next stage of their chosen career pathway.”

Anthony Linfield, AGCO’s training development manager said, “The AGCO apprenticeship schemes offer a real opportunity to gain knowledge and skills at college as well as gaining valuable hands-on experience in the workplace.

“Time-served land-based engineers that progress and demonstrate high levels of expertise are a tremendous asset to all of us in the industry.”

All of the apprentices also received a specially dedicated toolkit supplied by the awards sponsor, Draper Tools, as a lasting reminder of the skills they have developed on the course. Draper Tools has a long association with the apprenticeship scheme, once again sponsoring the awards ceremony.

Also collecting awards during the ceremony were Jack Adcock and Shane Hilton of Chandlers Farm Equipment Ltd, Henry O’Brien of Redlynch Agricultural Engineering, Josh Stephney of MST, Chris Underwood of TNS and Kai Farrow of Wilfred Scruton.

RVW PUGH CONTINUE MASSEY CELEBRATIONS
With a tractor run

RVW Pugh's Massey Ferguson tractor run

Dealers RVW Pugh celebrated Massey Ferguson's 60 years and their 40 years in business with a special tractor run recently.

This year Massey Ferguson celebrates 60 years with their ‘Diamond celebrations’ whaich are taking place across the country and in the press throughout 2018.

RVW Pugh, Massey Ferguson dealers, have held the franchise since the year 2000 but have also been in business since 1978, marking 40 years this year. Celebrations are on-going for the company with a recent successful Open Day at their Cheshire branch, welcoming over 400 people.

They have also recently introduced a unique black Massey Ferguson tractor to their fleet, which will mark a special year for them and on the 22nd of April they hosted an exclusively Massey Ferguson road run.

The concept was to hold a tractor run to celebrate all the prominent models from across the years up to the present day. The route set off from their Head office in Churchstoke, Powys and took the entrants up over the Kerry Ridgeway to Clun where they were treated to a hog roast. The afternoon session saw the tractors head over the very tops of the Kerry Forest, the sun shining and the views were breathtaking.

Just over 46 tractors entered the road run with models dating back to 1958 to ones as new as 2018, with the most photographed models being the MF 1505 and the MF 1200 articulated tractors both from Mr Humphries who travelled from Church Stretton. There were entrants from as far as Malvern as well as plenty of onlookers who were overjoyed to see such a great range of MF tractors.

Andrew Purnell, Massey Ferguson area sales manager took part and said, "It was a great day, everyone thoroughly enjoyed it". Some of the ladies of the Pugh family, Caroline Pugh and Emma Leah did their bit for the girls with Emma on a vintage MF35 and Caroline driving one of the new Massey Ferguson 4709 global tractors. Mary Evans, RVW Pugh Marketing Manager took their black Massey Ferguson to prominent points along the route which attracted a lot of attention with its unique look.

RVW Pugh has donated money from the run to Severn Hospice charity which will go towards specialist care and support to families across Shropshire and North Powys who are living with an incurable illnesses.

With such a successful event it has been suggested by participants that it becomes a yearly occurrence. 'Watch this space', say RVW Pugh!

Richard Green

Kioti UK has announced the appointment of Richard Green as the business’s new area sales manager for Scotland and northern England.

Kioti UK has announced the appointment of Richard Green as the business’s new area sales manager for Scotland and northern England.

Based in central Scotland, Richard has considerable knowledge and experience of compact tractors and the groundcare industry from his previous roles, says Patrick Desmond, Kioti UK general manager.

“He also has the advantage of already being familiar with the Kioti range of products, having sold them successfully in his previous employment, and has experience in both the agricultural and construction industries,” said Patrick.

Meanwhile, the firm is also now providing four years’ warranty cover for all tractors in its range. The first two years cover the whole tractor for parts and labour, while years three and four relate to the engine and transmission only, including parts and labour. Terms and conditions, including regular dealer servicing, apply to the warranty.

“Sales of Kioti tractors have gone from strength to strength over the last few years since the formation of Kioti UK,” said Patrick.

“This step should further increase the attractiveness of the tractor product line - which now spans 26-113hp - to professional end users, alongside the Mechron diesel utility vehicles and the commercial cut-and-collect WD1260 ride-on mower.”

IBCOS LAUNCH NEW MOBILE APP
For tablets and smartphones

Gold Service app

Ibcos say their new mobile app is designed to help dealers improve their workshop productivity, cut down on equipment costs and bolster their bottom line.

Ibcos Computers Ltd has launched its new Gold Service application for tablets and smartphones, designed they say, to help dealers improve their workshop productivity, cut down on equipment costs and bolster their bottom line.

Ibcos say they created the app to replace the paper job card, helping technicians to effectively manage and perform their daily tasks, without having to constantly run back to a computer terminal or deal with copious amounts of paperwork.

The Early Release of the application is already available, giving the users the ability to scan and upload workshop barcode data via Wi-Fi and Mobile Networks using either a smartphone or a tablet, which eliminates the need for purchasing and maintaining a regular scanner.

“The best thing is that we can run the application on the mobile phones our team already has,” said Judith Loversidge, the Managing Director at G&J Peck and Ibcos customer. “We are already seeing plenty of benefits with this version of the Gold Service application and looking forward to the additional benefits it will bring to our business in the future.”

Another Ibcos customer, Julian Folkes, the Service Administrator at Compass Tractors Limited, called the app “a vast improvement” over the workshop scanners they were using previously.

“Our engineers find the app very easy to operate,” said Folkes. “Particularly when sharing their recorded labour hours over the network.”

Scanning barcodes is only one of many functionalities the app has to offer - with more on the way as Ibcos continues to develop them.

“Just like our Gold software, the Service application will be an always-evolving platform,” said Collette Convery, the Managing Director at Ibcos. “As long as our customers continue to grow and provide us with their feedback, we will keep adding new features and capabilities to the app.”

Carousel will work in collaboration with Kubota’s UK warehouse partner Unipart Logistics, operating from its central hub in Birmingham. Kubota say their dealer network will benefit from an enhanced delivery service for replacement parts, a self-service booking portal, as well as greater visibility over shipments, all of which the company says, will significantly improve customer experience.

WEATHER WATCH
After the scorcher last week, what then . . .?

Weather Watch

The weather, not the economy, drives our business. So what's in store as we head into May - and can we believe the Sun's headline?

THIS WEEK

What a week of contrasts. From the heatwave last week which saw the hottest April day for 70 years (29.1C recorded), temperatures have reverted to normal and finished the week with temperatures hovering between 10C and 14C over most of the country.

However, the warm weather kick-started the season for garden centres. Dobbies Garden Centres saw its highest ever sales over the weekend, with Friday, Saturday and Sunday (20-22 April) beating all historic records and rose 45% versus the same period in 2017.

THIS MONTH

Despite cold winds and snow, overall temperatures were surprising high, thanks to blankets of clouds providing insulation at night. In early April, the place to go was northern Scotland the direst place being Loch Glascarnoch and the sunniest, the Isle of Lewis in the Western Isle. Meanwhile Edinburgh was drenched for the first two weeks and Glasgow the gloomiest with only 20 hours of sunshine.

Most of England and Wales was wet and gloomy thanks to the track of the jet stream south of the UK which did not extend to northern Scotland. Then came the bizzarre change to blazing hot sunshine as southerly winds were dragged up from the Mediterranean.

REMEMBER LAST YEAR (APRIL 2017)?

A similar month of contrasts. Easter weekend was mid-month (16-19 April 2017), average temperature in London was 14C. However, the week before, its was 25C on Sunday 9 April, dipping to a high of 13C the following day.  There’s April for you!

Rainfall for the UK was 47% of the average for the month, however the end of the month saw a weather system move into the south-west of England and Devon had 60% of its normal monthly rainfall on 30 April.

OUTLOOK

Today:

The often heavy rain will continue to move east across much of England and Wales, with showers in the south, where it will be windy. Sunshine and showers for Scotland.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Sunshine and showers are likely for Saturday. Heavy rain and gales are expected for the southeast on Sunday and Monday, but it will be largely dry, sunny, but cold elsewhere.

Beyond:

Into the start of May conditions will be generally changeable and windy at times. There will be some drier, sunnier spells, these most likely in the north and northwest. Temperatures will be near or just below average, with only a small chance of warmer conditions. Outlook for 7-21 May is for mixed conditions, with some dry spells as well as more changeable periods with rain or showers occurring more widely.

The Sun however is dubbing a possible heatwave over the coming week as Beauty from the East.

THIS WEEK IN WEATHER HISTORY

1981: The country is blanketed with 8 inches (20cm) of snow from the Pennines to Salisbury Plain from 23-26 April, and in the Cotswolds snow depths of 60cm were recorded

1997: on 27 April, heavy rain stops play at Glamorgan’s ground in Cardiff, and saw the first use of the now widely used Duckworth-Lewis method to decide the outcome of a match

2000: The Silverstone Grand Prix was held on 23 April, but because of heavy rain in the lead up to the race weekend, the police were forced to close all the car parks. A heavy fog did not help matters as helicopters were grounded and many drivers had to use motorcycles to reach the circuit. The 60,000 crowd in 1999 was reduced to less than 15,000

WEATHER QUOTE

You can spend your whole life trying to be popular, but at the end of the day the size of the crowd at your funeral will be largely dictated by the weather.”
