ROLE MODELS
Hard working, dedicated & talented
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs

Steve Gibbs

There are increasing numbers of young dealers out there building successful businesses - let's hope they can inspire the generation that follows them.

A perennial issue which is discussed on this Weekly Update, in our magazine pages, at trade associations, in manufacturer's offices and dealerships across the country is how to attract young people into the industry?

Looking through archive issues of Service Dealer to compile the Flashback feature for the magazine, it's clear to see the subject has been discussed at length for many years.

Just as an example, I was reading through a copy from March 1995 this week where a story entitled 'BAGMA develop the modern apprenticeship' caught my eye.

That story began with the dramatic assertion, "Garden machinery dealers, already facing a serious skills shortage, could soon be in serious trouble unless the trade is able to train its service staff properly".

The story continued to explain how BAGMA were responding to this challenge by developing a modern apprenticeship for the garden machinery industry, a scheme which had received backing from the Department of Employment - which at the time was keen to see BAGMA strengthen its role as an industry training organisation and lead body.

The association said In March '95 all the projects they were involved in were aimed at encouraging young men and women to consider a career in the agricultural and garden machinery sectors and to provide them with an opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications.

BAGMA are still very much involved in doing this today - alongside the AEA and IAgrE. I'm aware as part of their efforts to promote the industry to young people, that a new careers brochure has recently been jointly produced by the three associations and is soon to be published. Tools like this are invaluable for spreading the message about the industry - getting information into the hands of careers officers and the like.

In today's Weekly Update there's a story about IAgrE, in partnership with CNH Industrial, announcing new, prestigious student awards, which are open to students in higher education. Rob Alker, Current Product Improvement Manager at CNH Industrial is quoted in the article, saying, "As a key player in the Agricultural Equipment sector, the future of our industry relies on nurturing the best possible engineers to design and build the products of the future."

So there's clearly a concerted effort across the industry to attempt to encourage young people to join. Continued promotion of what a rewarding and varied working life it can provide need to be the order of the day.

I'm therefore delighted that the next issue of Service Dealer magazine, which is shortly to hit the presses, can hopefully contribute in some way to that effort. Our cover star for the March/April '18 issue is Chris Garlick of Garlick Garden Machinery - winner of the Garden Machinery Dealer of the Year award last November.

Chris started up his own garden machinery business five years ago, at the grand old age of 21. He is a shining example of the success hard work, dedication and talent can bring young people starting out in this sector. He tells us he has already taken on an apprentice and over the coming years is looking to expand his showroom, take on more products and employ more staff.

Chris is not a lone example of a younger dealer finding success. There are increasing numbers out there, doing things their own way, and building excellent businesses.

Hopefully their stories can be promoted by the industry, so these young men and women can act as inspirations for the next generation making their initial career choices. They are role models to aspire to.

DEALER AREA CHANGES FOR DOOSON
In Scotland Central Belt

Gordons, Strathaven

The Central Belt region of Scotland will now be handled jointly by the company’s dealers, James Gordon Ltd (Gordons) and Balgownie Ltd.

Doosan Construction Equipment has announced that the Central Belt region of Scotland will now be handled jointly by the company’s dealers, James Gordon Ltd (Gordons) and Balgownie Ltd.

Based at Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway, Gordons was appointed last year as the Authorised Dealer for the Doosan Heavy range in the South West and Borders regions of Scotland and for the county of Cumbria in Northern England.

Gordons, Strathaven

The existing Gordons territory has now been extended with the addition of the following central-belt areas - Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverclyde, Renfrewshire and all the Lothian Counties, Argyle and Bute, Isle of Mull, Stirling, Fife, Falkirk and the parts of Lanarkshire and Ayrshire that the company did not previously cover.

Balgownie, based at Inverurie, is responsible for the Doosan range in Aberdeenshire, Morayshire, Angus and the Highlands as well as Perthshire and Kinross-shire. To these areas have been added the Isle of Skye and remaining Highlands postcodes. Perth and Kinross had already been added 12 months earlier.

Balgownie

According to Doosan, Gordons and Balgownie have been awarded the extended areas purely on merit, despite very strong interest from other parties. The company is looking forward to working closely with both companies to continue its success in the Scottish market.

Gordons has six depots across its territory and will operate the new Central-Belt area through the Strathaven and Berryhill depots, with support from the headquarters branch in Castle Douglas.

Balgownie will handle the extended territory from the headquarters in Inverurie and the company‘s branch in Turriff.

Dooson say as well as covering existing contracts, Gordons and Balgownie provide flexible service agreements, depending on the requirements of the customer. They offer service and warranty work on all existing Doosan machines in their areas, backed by a full selection of genuine accessories and parts. Both companies hold a stock of new and used Doosan branded machines, to respond quickly to customers’ needs.

TRACTOR REGISTRATIONS STAY STRONG IN JANUARY
10% up on Jan '17 figures

January saw 698 tractors registered

The AEA says the number of agricultural tractors registered for road use during January was 698, the highest for January since 2014.

According to figures released by the AEA, the number of agricultural tractors registered for road use during January was 698, 10% more than in the same month last year.

The latest figure is the highest for January since 2014.

Stephen Howarth, Agricultural Economist at the AEA said, "This total may include some late notifications of tractors which were pre-registered in advance of the implementation of new regulations from 1 January 2018. Therefore, it is too early to say whether those pre-registrations will have a knock-on effect on tractor registrations as we move further into 2018."

KUBOTA CONTINUE NORTHAMPTON SAINTS PARTNERSHIP
Sponsorship extended until 2020

Kubota extend partnership with Northampton Saints

Relationship with Aviva Premiership club is manufacturer's first ever sponsorship with a top flight sports team.

Kubota UK has announced it is extending its elite sponsorship of Aviva Premiership club Northampton Saints until 2020.

The manufacturer joined forces with Saints back in 2015, the company’s first ever sponsorship with a top flight sports team. Based on the success of the partnership, Kubota says it is looking forward to continuing its support for the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons.

Dave Roberts, Kubota UK’s Managing Director, said, “Signing a new deal with Northampton Saints was an easy decision for us. Over the past 3 years that we have been involved with the club, it has proved itself to be an outstanding partner, delivering fantastic exposure for our brand, a high quality match day experience and, of course, a great way to showcase our products. Partnering with Saints aligns perfectly with our drive for excellence, and the desire to lead our respective fields. We’re delighted to be continuing to build on that over the next few years.”

As part of the deal, Kubota provides some of its groundcare solutions to help the Franklin’s Gardens Ground Staff maintain its pitches to the highest standards in the Aviva Premiership.

Mark Darbon, Saints CEO, is thrilled to see the relationship between the two organisations blossom. He commented, “This is a partnership in the truest sense of the word. Kubota UK has been a great asset to the club in recent years and we are delighted to have extended our partnership with them.

“At Saints, we set out to have the highest standards in every area of our organisation. This includes how we maintain our stadium pitch - one of only three natural grass pitches in the league - as well as our training facilities. Having the highest quality training and playing surfaces is vital in allowing the team to perform.

“By continuing our work with Kubota, we are helping build the best platform to realise our ambitions, and we are looking forward to working closely with the machinery manufacturer over the next two years.”

The elite sponsorship package also means Kubota receive a suite of commercial rights, from prime brand positioning on the back of the Saints playing shorts for all matches, to the Kubota logo featuring prominently in the stadium including on the big screen, on the perimeter advertising boards around the ground and in the matchday programme and matchday tickets. The sponsorship also includes corporate hospitality and player appearances for Kubota events.

Karen Tipping, Kubota UK’s Marketing Manager, concluded: “Rugby union has a really strong appeal with our dealer and end-user customers. As Saints are one of the leading professional rugby clubs in Europe, our sponsorship gives us the opportunity to extend the reach of the Kubota brand as well as further strengthen our relationships with our dealer and end-user customers.”
