DEALERS PRAISE GARDEN TRADER
A very successful launch period
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs

Steve Gibbs

As the website which puts dealers in front of customers moves to its next phase, we hear from some very satisfied users.

At the heart of all small businesses' success is marketing.

For an independent outdoor powered machinery dealership to thrive, all the various aspects of the products you stock and services you offer need to be sold to your local (and wider) community.

Marketing is a process by which a product or service is introduced and promoted to potential customers. Without marketing, your business may offer the highest quality products and the greatest service, but none of your potential customers would know about it.

So whatever tools are available to an independent dealer to raise their profile really should be grasped with both hands.

This year dealers have been offered another means by which they can reach out to potential customers - crucially to customers who are actively in the market to make a purchase and are searching around on the web for what's available.

The Garden Trader website, which is brought to you by the Service Dealer team, has seen over 600 independent dealers across the UK sign up since its launch in February. I know the team who are running the site are delighted with the statistics it has achieved during the last 8 months.

I could repeat all the 'click through' and 'impressions' and 'page views' stats which the people who understand these things are rightly very proud of - but I think what brings it home just what a valuable tool the site has proved this year, is to hear from some of the guys at the sharp end who've been benefitting from its service.

Here are a selection of comments from dealers who have found tangible success in using Garden Trader this year:

  • "I am amazed by the number of hits each of our six branches have experienced. I think this type of website is vital to the future of the trade." - Andrew Brown, Geo Browns Ltd
  • Seems to be working for us. We've had a few people saying they have come in having seen us on the GT site. We always ask new customers how they found us.” - David Mason, Masons Mowers, Peterborough, Cambs.
  • "Gets you out there, consumers find it easy to use and they are finding us." - Liam, The Lawnmower Company, Prenton, Wirral
  • "Nice to have a universal industry site - definitely a step in the right direction." - Steven Law, Cutting Edge Machinery, Redditch, Worcestershire.
  • "Like the site, easy to use, surprised and delighted by the number of hits.” - Scott Taylor, Grahams Garden Machinery, Nr Truro, Cornwall.

Since its launch the site has benefitted from sponsorship from Briggs & Stratton, Henton and Chattell and STIHL UK. The site has also been well supported by all of the manufacturers and distributors who have their products listed on it.

Simon Hewitt, Head of Marketing at STIHL GB, who have confirmed their sponsorship of the site into 2018, added his praise saying, “STIHL believes Garden Trader is a great idea - bringing together retail customers and time-pressed dealers in one place. STIHL has supported Garden Trader since its launch and we believe it offers manufacturers and dealers a great opportunity to promote the combination of premium quality garden tools and expert service.”

This incredibly positive feedback comes just as the Garden Trader site moves into its next phase. The service which has been running free of charge this year, is now starting to go out to users, explaining that as of January 2018 there will be charge attached for using the resource.

Ron Miller, who is part of the organising team says, "We believe Garden Trader is a truly inexpensive and trouble free vehicle to create the exposure and customer awareness that a dealers' business needs - with virtually everything done by us."

You can find out here what the site will be charging next year.

Going by these opinions, and the excitement which the guys who are running the site have about developments for next year, signing up for 2018 is something to which all dealers should give serious consideration.

DEALER OF THE YEAR FINALISTS

NEWS
NEXT PHASE FOR GARDEN TRADER WEBSITE
Fee announced for 2018

Garden Trader
The organisers of the Garden Trader website have announced the fee for specialist dealers to continue using the service during 2018.

The organisers of the Garden Trader website have announced the fee for specialist dealers to continue using the service during 2018.

The website which launched in February this year is the only independent national website that is targeting customers at the point which they are considering a purchase.

Site owner, Duncan Murray-Clarke, who also owns Service Dealer, said, "We have been utterly delighted with how Garden Trader has taken off with independent dealers since we launched in February - attacting over 600 specialists to sign up for the service.

"In the 8 months since launch, the site has attracted a large number of visitors searching for specific products or product services which has directly led to customers being driven through dealers' doors. The site has clocked up a quarter of a million page views - and that is from a standing start.

"We have invested time and money in the website so that users can easily login and view how many people have seen their dealership listing since they began on the site and how many have shown a direct interest in their products and services.

"Now is the time for the next phase of Garden Trader's life, which is why we are asking dealers who wish to continue with the service to pay for their listing as of January 2018."

The cost for continuing a listing for all of 2018 is £95 + VAT per dealer branch.

"That is £1.82 per week to advertise on the only independent national website that is targeting customers at the point they are considering a purchase," says Duncan.

"When you compare this annual price to other more general listings like Yell or an advertisement in the local paper it is amazing value for such a dedicated site that supports and promotes professional dealers in the UK."

In fairness to all dealers who re-sign and pay by the 31st of December 2017, it will be necessary to remove from the site those who have not.

HUSQVARNA WARN INCOME WILL BE HIT
As it cuts ties with a major U.S retailer

Husqvarna Consumer Brands Division includes McCulloch, Flymo and Weed Eater
Husqvarna Group issued a statement this week which said it expects net sales in its Consumer Brands Division to take a $123 million hit next year.

Husqvarna Group issued a statement this week which said it expects net sales in its Consumer Brands Division to take a 1 billion Swedish crown ($123 million) hit next year as it cuts back business with a major U.S. client.

The statement said the company was reducing the volume of business with one of its biggest U.S. retail customers, "following the strategy to focus resources on accounts with more attractive opportunities".

Husqvarna Consumer Brands Division includes McCulloch, Flymo and Weed Eater

The statement went on to say, "The Division has started to adjust capacity and other measures to mitigate short-term negative financial effects."

Kai Wärn, President and CEO of Husqvarna Group was quoted as saying, "We are committed to a strong, future-oriented Consumer Brands Division, and this means we need to take decisions that are painful in the short term."

The statement did not make it clear who the US retailer they refer to is, or offer any further eleboration as to why they are cutting ties with them.

They did go on to say that in 2018, the Consumer Brands Division will focus more resources on battery-powered products and robotic lawn mowers under several different brands.

Launches will include a refreshed Weed Eater brand with a new line of interchangeable tools and a full line of 58-volt battery-powered handheld products under the Poulan Pro and Jonsered brands.

“We are developing opportunities in battery products and robotic mowers,” said Jeff Hohler, President Consumer Brands Division, “and while the decision to reduce volume may be a near term setback, we are confident that we will emerge stronger as a Division in the mid to longer term.”
DEALERS ENCOURAGED TO BOOST PROFITS
At Henton & Chattell's recent dealer days

Dealers checking out the new Ego product
Exploring ways of maximising revenues was a key message from Peter Chaloner, managing director of Henton & Chattell, when he addressed almost 500 dealers.

Exploring ways of maximising revenues was a key message from Peter Chaloner, managing director of Henton & Chattell, recently when he addressed almost 500 dealers at Donington Park on 5th October and Oakley Hall on the 11th.

Attendees joined the Henton & Chattell teams on the two dealer days and were given presentations by key manufacturers.

Peter Chaloner (above) began proceedings with a business overview before handing over to Henton & Chattell’s trade sales manager, Andy Marvin, who spoke about Cobra, Billy Goat and Murray, explaining the latest developments and new products from each brand.

Peter Melrose and Steve Roskell from EGO Power+ then addressed dealers, talking about the successes of the 56volt lithium-ion range and unveiled the new X-series of professional products that EGO will be launching in 2018. Leigh Bowers from Allett also spoke, highlighting the continued success of Allett with particular focus on its cordless range of Liberty mowers that launched this year.

After the presentations, dealers went outside into the grounds of the venues to try out the machines. Highlights in this session included many new products from Cobra such as three new rear roller mowers, an AirMow with a Briggs & Stratton ReadyStart engine, and the new S Series engines. Henton & Chattell also used the opportunity to introduce the brand new range of Zero Turn mowers from Murray.

Peter Chaloner commented: “Our dealer days are always a great way of launching new products whilst also getting the opportunity to speak to our dealers to get their feedback and insight on the market. It was great to see so many dealers in attendance, they all responded well to the new products and we look forward to seeing the product selling through in 2018.”

There was a prize draw on each day with first prize of £200 Virgin Experience voucher. This was won by Anglian Mowers at Donington Park and Derek’s Garden Machinery at Oakley Hall.

Over the last 40 years, the family dealership has been an established name throughout the mid-western counties of Ireland, renowned for providing first-class machinery and aftersales support to both the domestic and professional markets. Regional customers can now purchase a range of Kubota’s groundcare machinery including the L Series, B Series and STW Series compact tractors, along with the RTV range. The GR1600 ride-on mower has already become a best seller for the dealership, along with its G2120 counterpart, together with the professional G/F Series range.

Adrian Langmead, Groundcare Business Development Manager for Kubota UK, said: “This announcement is all about strengthening our product and service offering in this key region. It’s an exciting development and one which we are delighted to announce to the market.”

A customer Fendt event was recently held by dealers RVW Pugh showing a portfolio of the manufacturer's product and all things Fendt.

A customer Fendt event was recently held by dealers RVW Pugh Ltd at Garthmyl Hall, Montgomery, Powys, which displayed their portfolio of the manufacturer's product and all things Fendt.

The aptly named ‘Fendt Fest’ took place at the start of the German Oktoberfest celebrations to be in-keeping with the theme and support of the company's origin.

(From left) Fendt UK Sales Manager, Martin Hamer; Julia Pugh, Garthmyl Hall; Ceri Jones and Mary Evans, marketing, RVW PUGH all dressed for the occasion

RVW Pugh say they started plans for the event back in the summer months and wanted to give their Fendt customers an opportunity to attend as well as some customers that they may not have dealt with before. Together, they say themselves and Fendt worked hard to deliver an event that offered information and knowledge and typical German hospitality.

Guests were able to rotate product stations including Combines and Self-propelled foragers, rakes, tedders, tractors and guidance. With the full range of Fendt tractors taking centre stage at the front of the hall it looked an impressive set up. They were then seated in traditional trestle tables and benches to enjoy a three-course, German inspired meal, German beer served in their very own Fendt stein and entertainment from Bavarian band Brasswurst. Audience participation was encouraged!

"There was a lot of work that went into this event from both parties and we really felt that it was worthwhile," said  Robert Pugh, Owner of RVW Pugh LTD. "We want to educate the farming community on the great benefits of the Fendt product and stop the price stigma that surrounds it."

The event gave guests an opportunity to speak with RVW PUGH personnel and Fendt specialists about the product but also to speak with other users for a real life testimonials.

RVW Pugh say that the feedback from guests has been excellent. Comments collected from attendees included, "The place looked fantastic with all the tractors under spotlights. The staff, the hall and the family are all a credit to RVW Pugh and Fendt. A very big thank you." And, "It was nice to have chance to look closely at products both suitable for our operation and some that are very different. I really appreciate the effort."

AGRI-ARGO UK BECOMES NAAC CORPORATE PARTNER
UK & Ireland distributor of McCormick tractors

McCormick X8 Series
Company aims to support the activities of Britain’s agricultural contractors by joining their representative organisation.

The UK and Ireland distributor of McCormick tractors - AgriArgo UK - say they aim to support the activities of Britain’s agricultural contractors by joining their representative organisation as a corporate partner.

McCormick X8 Series

Ray Spinks, general manager and sales director at AgriArgo, says the National Association of Agricultural Contractors (NAAC) is widely recognised as doing a good job for professional operators providing services in agriculture and other land-based sectors.

“Apart from generally promoting the advantages of using contractors and supporting them with advice and information, the NAAC does a lot of behind-the-scenes work, representing the interests of contractors at the highest level,” he points out.

“The NAAC contributes contractor perspectives in consultations by government and regulating authorities, has created good working practice standards to reinforce professionalism and provides valuable guidance on many aspects of business management.

“Individual contractors have just one voice; but as members of the NAAC, they have a much stronger collective voice to express their views and interests.”

AgriArgo will make its corporate member debut at the NAAC’s Contractor 2017 event, the only national gathering organised specifically for professional land-based contractors, being held on December 14 at the East of England Showground, Peterborough.

AgriArgo say they aim to forge closer links with contractors through its NAAC partnership and contribute its views and information on issues such as farm vehicle roadworthiness, operator training standards, and the machinery supply chain.

JOHN DEERE EXPANDING GATOR RANGE
Dealers to see new vehicles early 2018

The new John Deere diesel XUV 865M utility vehicle
The brand new petrol XUV 835M and diesel XUV 865M models are being preceded this autumn by the restyled HPX 815E, XUV 560E and XUV 590M Gators.

John Deere say their new full-size Gator utility vehicles will offer the company’s quietest ever cab, more room for both driver and passengers and an extremely efficient heating system.

Available from UK and Irish dealers in early 2018, the brand new petrol XUV 835M and diesel XUV 865M models are being preceded this autumn by the restyled HPX 815E, XUV 560E and XUV 590M Gators, which feature new model numbers and several specification updates.

The new John Deere diesel XUV 865M utility vehicle

The 54hp XUV 835M and 23hp 865M offer power steering, a CVT transmission and a top speed of 37 or 31mph (60 or 50kph) respectively, plus a tight turning circle and optimal weight distribution for off-road performance. For extra versatility, these Gators can be fitted with a wide range of over 90 attachments from snow blades to winches, and feature a large 42-litre fuel tank to keep the vehicle running longer between fill-ups.

The spacious, pressurised cab can accommodate three people, for off-road use only. This new cab incorporates noise isolation and sound dampening components, making it the quietest yet available on the Gator range. It also offers year-round weather protection and the heating system includes a windscreen defrost feature.

Both these new, XUV Gator models feature ample legroom and a tiltable steering wheel. The cargo box has a load capacity of 454kg, while towing capacity has been increased by a third to 907kg and total payload capacity is 680kg.

The diesel powered HPX 815E Gator utility vehicle shares its new styling with the XUV 855M model, which replaces the 855D. The 815E’s updated cargo box also has a load capacity of 454kg and both the sides and the tailgate, which has a pick-up style one-handed latch, can be easily removed to provide a flatbed-style load bay if required. The composite construction of this cargo box makes it dent, rattle and rust-resistant.

Additional changes to this model include a new digital dashboard, powerful LED headlights and a restyled front bumper, to improve handling and operation particularly in challenging terrain.

The XUV 560E (non-power steering) and XUV 590M (with power steering) Gator models both have petrol engines and now feature LED headlights as standard and an instrument cluster for easier operation. The new styling includes alloy wheels, which allow the suspension to follow ground contours more closely and thus improve grip. A seat belt interlock system provides a safer drive, by restricting the machines’ speed to 8mph (13kph) if the seat belt is not done up.
