SALTEX HITS ITS STRIDE
A fantastic show at the NEC this week

In its crunch third year as an indoor show, the IOG's SALTEX show provided a superb industry showcase - with just a couple of small quibbles.

Myself and the Service Dealer team spent a very enjoyable and highly worthwhile two days at the Birmingham NEC for IOG SALTEX this week.

And the impression I overwhelmingly received from both exhibitors and visitors I spoke to was that the exhibition was truly working for them too.

The space the show now takes place in is a decent size, but compact enough to make it feel buzzy and busy most of the time. It's easy for visitors to get around and find who they are looking for. And once on a stand you can have long, productive conversations without being inhibited by whatever the British weather chooses to throw at you that particular day.

The first day of the show on Wednesday felt particularly well attended. The halls became very busy, very early. When my train got into the International station at 9.30, by the time I got across to the halls large queues had formed waiting to gain entry.

Speaking to exhibitors, many told me they had started having their first serious business conversations with visitors on their stands by five past nine on Wednesday. And most said they didn't really stop to catch their breath until around four that afternoon!

The second day took noticeably longer for the halls to fill. Perhaps this might have had something to do with the late night many of the groundsman visitors would have had the night before at the IOG Awards ceremony?! That event has grown to be huge, with around 800 visitors and a list of awards to be presented as long as your arm. So its little surprise that proceedings were a little slower to get going yesterday.

But by lunchtime the halls did indeed feel pretty packed out once again.

And crucially, packed out with quality, decision-making visitors. Time and again stand holders told me how pleased they were with the calibre of contacts and leads they were making. The top people who are in positions to specify machinery at facilities and businesses across the country were making plenty of genuine enquiries.

The proof of how successful these leads will eventually prove to be will of course not be known until visits and demos are made after the show - but as the first step in the process, SALTEX is certainly providing an excellent forum for business relationships to get underway and develop.

Also plenty of dealers made the trip to the Birmingham. Various companies I spoke to were delighted by the number of specialists they had seen come through their stands. There were plenty of franchises on show at SALTEX who were very interested in expanding their dealer networks. Of course all were talking about finding the right partners in the right part of the country - but there's no doubt that there's opportunities out there at the moment for dealers to expand their offerings if they so desire.

I genuinely believe that in its third year in the new format - which many would say would be the crunch year for the show - SALTEX hit its stride. It seemed to achieve its two key obligations - to satisfy both exhibitors and visitors.

Was there anything which didn't work? I guess I've just got a couple of slight grumbles

Firstly, the 'outside area'. I'm not sure why they are still bothering with this? There were only about four companies on small patch of grass on an island between a road and the disabled car park. I think the IOG should have the confidence in their show by this point to say we are 100% an indoors show now and knock this on the head.

The other concern I have is not really anything to do with the show's organisers, more with a tiny minority of exhibitors who are still clinging on to outdated marketing techniques of yesteryear. Considering just how progressive and professional an image the show as whole was projecting, for a couple of companies to still use scantily-clad young women to promote machinery doesn’t really fit anymore. The industry has moved on.

But those thoughts aside, genuine congratulations to the IOG, the exhibition organisers and the exhibitors for putting on a fantastic couple of days. Roll on next year!

Launches Mumby Machinery Ltd

Gary Mumby talking to visitors to the Mumby Machinery stand at SALTEX this week

Charterhouse Turf Machinery will take over full responsibly for all sales, parts and support of BLEC machinery in the UK and Ireland, distributing though selected dealers.

SALTEX this week saw Gary and Sue Mumby launch their new venture, Mumby Machinery Ltd, which will specialise in new and used equipment for the turfcare, landscaping and construction markets.

This move means that they have parted company company with Blec - a company which they founded in 1986.

In a statement issued by Charterhouse Turf Machinery ahead of the show the company says that since purchasing the assets of BLEC Global Limited in August 2015, Redexim have worked closely with Gary Mumby to integrate the development and manufacturing of BLEC products into the Redexim BV operation.

This process, Charterhouse says, has given the opportunity to update certain designs of the Blec products and take full advantage of Redexim’s advanced manufacturing techniques; Redexim is now able to offer a range of BLEC products with parts and service support.

Gary Mumby will therefore not be involved in the sales and support of the BLEC product range within the UK and Ireland. Gary will, however, continue to supply parts under licence for machinery manufactured by Blec Global Limited.

Redexim say they would like to thank Gary for his assistance and wish him the best of luck for his business ventures.

Charterhouse Turf Machinery will take over full responsibly for all sales, parts and support of BLEC machinery in the UK and Ireland, distributing though selected dealers.

Mumby Machinery exhibited this week at SALTEX with two new machines as well as the Harley Power Rake which the company has been approved as UK distributor of.

The new machines were the Multi-Star 1400 which is a tractor mounted multi-use turfcare implement which can carry out surface aerification, overseeding, liquid feeding and initial seeding.

The other new machine was the Hydra Drive 900 is two wheeled tractor with a a hydraulic system for powering attachments including initially a rotor rake, double drive seeder annd power box rake  - with other attachments to follow.

Event held at Kubota’s training academy tests the technical expertise of service engineers from manufacturer’s dealer network throughout the UK.

Robert Adkins from George Browns has scooped the top award at the annual Kubota UK Agricultural Skills Contest, an event that tests the technical expertise of service engineers from the manufacturer's dealer network throughout the UK.

L-R: Robert Adkins, Service Engineer at George Browns with Dave Roberts, Managing Director at Kubota UK

Now in its third year, the one day event, held at Kubota’s training academy at its head office in Oxfordshire, pushed the abilities of each contestant to their limits by the company’s expert service engineers.

The manufacturer challenged contestants to complete a detailed written assessment followed by an intense 90 minute practical assessment, with competitors tasked with diagnosing and fixing five faults on a M5111 tractor.

To highlight the importance the manufacturer puts on service training, top-level engineers from Kubota Corporation were flown in specifically for the event to form part of the expert judging panel with Kubota UK. The competitors were not only judged on their ability to remedy all five faults, but also being able to demonstrate the method behind their decision making process.

Robert Adkins, Service Engineer at George Browns, was crowned the overall winner with the judges citing his methodology and processes used to fixing all five faults set him apart from the other competitors.

Robert will now accompany Kubota UK to Japan to see its participation in the Kubota Global Skills Contest, where the very best Kubota engineers in the world compete.

Keith Miller, Service & Training Manager, said: “The high level of competition witnessed at this year’s event not only showcases the quality of engineers within our dealer network, but also the expertise and high standard of service Kubota customers have access to. Robert was a deserving winner and this award is a testament to the hard work and dedication he puts into his role as a service engineer.

“This competition enables us to celebrate the hard work and meticulous nature engineers from our dealer network apply to their daily jobs, as well as raising their technical and customer skills to ensure Kubota machinery users receive the highest levels of aftercare.

“Investment into improving the skills and technical abilities of service engineers within our business and dealer network is of the utmost importance and it’s great to see so many engineers willing to put their talents to the test. Such has been the success of the UK Agriculture Skills Contest since its introduction in 2015, Kubota employees from all over Europe were in attendance with a view to replicating the competition in their respective countries, therefore seeing Kubota UK as a Centre of Excellence to be aspired to.”

OCTOBER TRACTOR SALES WELL BELOW LAST YEAR'S
But following a more normal season pattern

October 2017's tractor registrations saw a 23.4% dip on the levels seen during October last year

Despite the slowdown relative to last year in the past three months, AEA say total registrations for the year to date remain 4.4% up on the equivalent period in 2016.

According to figures released by the AEA tractor registrations for the month of October totaled 846 units, which equates to a -23.4% change compared with October 2016.

Year to Date registrations total 9,904 units, which works out at a +4.4% change compared with January-October 2016.

Stephen Howarth, Agricultural Economist at the AEA said, "As anticipated, UK agricultural tractor registrations in October were again well below last year’s level. Twelve months ago, registrations were inflated due to a number of end-of-series promotions, so this year’s figures follow a more normal seasonal pattern. Indeed, the figure of 846 for October 2017 remained above the corresponding month in 2015.

"Despite the slowdown relative to last year in the past three months, total registrations for the year to date remain 4.4% up on the equivalent period in 2016 and are the highest at this point since 2014.

"The end of the promotional period saw a drop off in registrations in November and December 2016, so we might expect to see a return to year-on-year growth in the coming months."

Dealership holds event showcasing the additions to their ranges of agricultural and professional turf machinery.

At the annual Burden Bros Agri Harvest Supper, held at Framfield on October 20th, the company launched the latest in materials handling equipment, augmenting its ranges of agricultural and professional turf machinery.

The introduction focussed on the Kramer range of compact wheel loaders, telescopic wheel loaders and tele-handlers, which join the line-up as a result of a collaboration between the German manufacturer Kramer Werke GmbH and John Deere.

Bringing the Kramer materials handlers into the Burden Bros Agri sales territory, means that the company is now able to offer an even wider choice of essential equipment, suited to both arable and livestock farmers as well as professional turf and construction customers.

Full maintenance and aftersales service will be provided by Burden Bros Agri branches in Stockbury and Ivychurch, Kent as well as Framfield, East Sussex..

Commenting on the inclusion of Kramer material handlers into their product offering, Group Sales Manager, Harry Durrant said, “We’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to expand our materials handling portfolio for some time and now that John Deere have agreed this collaboration with Kramer, we feel very excited about adding these machines to our line-up. Each and every model offers significant user benefits in terms of performance, reliability and manoeuvrability.

"In addition, these machines fit the exact service and back-up profile that we already offer our customers and means that we are able to give one hundred percent field support in terms of operator training, machine optimisation and service back-up.” he concluded.

AG DEALERS OFFERED MEETING POINT AT AGRITECHNICA
International Dealer and Service Provider Centre

Agritechnica

Show organisers say the Centre will be the perfect base and meeting point for agricultural equipment dealers from around the world at Agritechnica 2017.

Organisers of the upcoming Agritechnica exhibition which takes place at Hanover’s exhibition grounds from the 12 to 18 November, say The 'International Dealer and Service Provider Centre' will be the perfect base and meeting point for agricultural equipment dealers from around the world at the show.

Located in Hall 2 and supported by the DLG (German Agricultural Society), the German agricultural dealer association (LandBauTechnik-Bundesverband) and the association of European machinery dealers (CLIMMAR), it is right in the middle of the action and offers a range of facilities for dealers and their business partners, customers and staff.

Specialists will be on hand to discuss subjects including financing, haulage and forwarding, customs, valuation of used machinery, insurance and machinery auctions. Advisory services on specific topics from staff of national, provincial and federal organisations involved in the farm machinery trading will also be available.

Also on hand will be business matchmaking with international dealer colleagues as well as a quiet area for private discussions.

Catering including coffee, cold beverages, small snacks, sandwiches will also be provided.

Organisers believe there will be a lot for dealers to talk about at the show. The President of CLIMMAR, Erik Hogervorst, says that there are signs of a recuperation of the European economy in general and the agricultural machinery markets in particular.

“Farmers and contractors are willing to invest again in new tractors and machines, and in maintenance,” he says. “A gradually increasing part of these investments will be in automation, robotisation and big data.

“We are at the forefront of a next industrial revolution often referred to as Industry 4.0. I strongly believe that this will change our industry and playing field as drastically as the shift from traction horses to tractors and mechanisation did,” adds Hogervorst.

“I’m also sure that this will result in new changes for dealers. We have to develop new business models for making money with data, robots and autonomous vehicles, which is a true challenge for many dealers and distributors.

“It also requires different employees, different skills and sometimes a co-operation with or even the acquisition of a specialised (start-up) company,” concludes Hogervorst.

Simon’s success follows that of his brother and co-director James Burton, who was one of two representatives from the UK & Ireland at this summer's John Deere & Michelin European Drivers' Championship in France, where he was placed 4th out of 16 tractor drivers.

Simon Burton registered for the Chopping Pro campaign via John Deere’s Facebook page in order to get as many likes from the internet community as possible. A total of 64 operators from seven countries entered the contest on Facebook, and 484 people voted for Simon Burton’s post, in which he said: “I love driving the John Deere 8600i and think it’s an engineering genius, so please vote for me!

Simon was rewarded with a professional photo and video shoot at his local John Deere dealership Sharmans Agricultural Ltd of Grantham. The resulting pictures, taken in front of a new 8000 Series self-propelled forage harvester, were displayed last Friday (27th October) on a special mobile billboard that was driven on a route from Sharmans’ Gonerby Moor, Grantham headquarters to Simon’s home village of Leasingham.

Simon Burton also received a John Deere 8000 Series SPFH driver’s gift pack, including a cap, polo shirt, overalls, waistcoat, softshell jacket, thermal mug and a 99-piece tool box.

National Association of Agricultural Contractor’s (NAAC) conference and exhibition

Conference is aimed at NAAC Members and non-members and organisers say it is the only national event to focus on the agricultural contracting sector.

Agricultural contractors will be stepping squarely into the limelight on December 14th at the National Association of Agricultural Contractor’s (NAAC) conference and exhibition at the East of England Showground, Peterborough.

"With over 91% of farmers using a contractor, the post-Brexit future must ensure a level playing field for contractors and farmers alike", said Duncan Russell, NAAC Chief Executive. "The time is right for our sector to be heard and to play an active role in the future shape of UK agriculture. Contractor 2017 will look at the future role of contractors in farming and the food chain and how businesses can confidently move ahead."

Entitled, ‘Contractors - Farming’s Best Kept Secret’, the conference is aimed at NAAC Members and non-members from across the UK and is the only national event to focus on the agricultural contracting sector.

Sponsored by John Deere Limited and RPC bpi Agriculture and supported by over 44 exhibitors, the day will include a packed exhibition arena full of machinery and services focussed on the specialised needs of agricultural contractors. There will also be a business hub with experts representing many of the benefits that NAAC members enjoy such as a health and safety package, legal services and insurance.

In the morning session speakers, including Meurig Raymond, NFU President and Duncan Sinclair, Waitrose Agricultural Manager, will focus on the future of farming and food and the integral role of contractors.

After a hot lunch, delegates will be free to roam the exhibition hall and talk to a wide range of exhibitors, alongside practically focussed transport seminars including Dan Cox, a road traffic police expert from Avon and Somerset Police looking at how to stay road legal.

This year’s entry by the Worshipful Company of Farmers, led by the company’s Master Julian Sayers, will centre on a New Holland T7.225 tractor and a CR8.80 combine, equipped with a 20-foot header, showing full support of the Back British Farming message.

Mark Crosby, marketing manager for New Holland UK and Ireland, says, “The Lord Mayor’s Show is a historic, world famous pageant with a long tradition of showcasing the best of British. New Holland is a strong advocate of British manufacturing and our Basildon factory proudly produces British built tractors to export globally. It’s an honour to play a part in the procession and display our support for Britain’s hardworking food and farming industry.”

Members of the Worshipful Company of Farmers and the NFU will accompany the New Holland machines in the procession. In addition, there will be eight young farmers each representing one of the NFU’s English and Welsh regions. Each representative has been chosen for making an outstanding contribution to the agricultural sector and is set to be at the forefront of Britain’s farming future.
