FAMILY PLANNING
Do you have succession plans in place?
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs

Steve Gibbs

With the news that family businesses are contributing higher than ever levels to the UK GDP, we'd love to hear from family-run dealerships about the advantages and disadvantages they feel this offers - and crucially whether you have succession plans in place.

A significant number of you reading this today will be involved in a family business in some way.

I read some very interesting statistics that were published recently regarding just what an important contributor to the national economy family businesses truly are.

In a new research paper entitled the UK Family Business Sector Report, produced by Oxford Economics for the Institute for Family Business (IFB) Research Foundation, it is revealed that family businesses’ gross value added contribution to UK GDP has increased by £100 billion since 2010 to now total £519 billion. This means that family firms, remarkably, now generate a quarter of UK GDP.

A quote I read from Elizabeth Bagger, who is the IFB Executive Director, said, “Family businesses are the backbone of the UK economy - but their widespread presence and contribution to the economy are often underestimated. You will find family businesses all across the UK, in every industry sector - from sibling start-ups to multi-generational international brands.

"Not only have family firms created an extra 2.3 million jobs since 2010, but their tax contribution each year is more than the annual NHS budget. This all demonstrates how growth in the family business sector benefits the UK economy, consumers, the exchequer and the millions who work in family businesses.

"To ensure family businesses continue to flourish, we’re calling on the Government to support them with policies which allow family firms to plan and invest for the future.”

Which is a sentiment which I'm sure many of our readers would echo - because it's this notion of planning and investing in the future which can often prove highly problematic for family businesses in our sector.

Of course there are many advantages in running a family business. Maybe one of the most important being the overall stability of the company which comes from having the longevity of family leadership. Also the commitment to the company's cause will be incredibly strong amongst family members - arguably more so than in non-family companies.

Other factors such as flexibility with family members wiling to wear whichever hat is required to get the job the done and potentially lower costs with family members prepared to take pay cuts when times are tight, can also contribute to their continued success.

But it is undeniable that there are some ever-present risks which are peculiar to family businesses. One unfortunate one is simply a lack of interest amongst some family members in being part of the company. If a situation occurs where family members aren’t truly interested in joining the family business, but do so anyway because it’s expected of them, the result is likely to be apathetic, unengaged employees. In non-family businesses these types of employees would simply be fired. It’s not so simple in a family firm though!

Following on from this, other potential hazards could include family conflict, unstructured leadership or nepotism putting the wrong people into the wrong roles!

But perhaps the biggest risk to family businesses and one which we hear about all too often amongst independent dealers, is a lack of succession.

It appears that many family firms lack succession plans, either because the leader doesn’t have the desire to admit that he or she will, one day, need to step down, or because there is unfortunately no immediately obvious candidate within the family set-up willing to take the business on into the future.

Business experts will talk about just how vital succession planning is for family businesses. Not having a strong succession plan in place, they say, could result in poor leadership, family quarrels and often financial or legal trouble for the company.

It's certainly a complicated and difficult area - and one which proves painful for many companies. It is in fact a topic which is due to be discussed at November's Service Dealer Conference.

In the meantime let us know, if you are you part of a family business, what are the main advantages and disadvantages you find this affords you in running your dealership? Also is succession a worry for you? Or something which will just happen smoothly and naturally?

We'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter. Please leave a comment below and we may look to publish some of your contributions in the next issue of Service Dealer magazine.

L-R: Service Dealer owner Duncan Murray-Clarke and Kramp UK Sales Director Des Boyd join Pete and Emma McArthur to celebrate their Overall Dealer of the Year win at last year's ceremony

As ever the glittering presentation ceremony will take place in the evening at the Oxford Belfry Hotel following the Service Dealer Conference, which this year takes place on Thursday November 15th.

Winning a category not only is superb recognition of you and your team's hard work and dedication throughout the year, but the attendant publicity could be a real boost to a dealership's profile both locally and nationally.

Like last year, the core dealer categories for the 2018 competition are:

  • GARDEN MACHINERY DEALER OF THE YEAR
  • PROFESSIONAL TURFCARE DEALER OF THE YEAR
  • FARM MACHINERY DEALER OF THE YEAR
  • FORESTRY EQUIPMENT DEALER OF THE YEAR
  • ATV/QUAD DEALER OF THE YEAR

As well being able to nominate yourself, a dealership can also be nominated by customers, suppliers, manufacturers. Many factors are taken into account when judging the categories, but the most important is customer feedback - which will be acquired online throughout the year. The judging panel will meet in October to assess entries.

There are also two other award categories:

  • Star of The Dealership
  • Apprentice of The Year

With these categories we want you to tell us who really goes that extra mile to help make your business a success. This is a great opportunity to nominate an employee who exceeds expectations within your business.

So don't delay. Make sure your dealership is in with a chance this year. Visit www.servicedealer.co.uk/2018-award-nominations and this year it could be you!

TRACTOR REGISTRATIONS RALLY IN APRIL
Back to year-on-year growth

1189 tractors were registered in the UK during April 2017

During last month the AEA say 1,189 tractors were registered, just over 100 (11%) more than in April 2017.

According to figures released by the AEA during the month of April 2018 1,189 tractor units were registered which equates to a +10.9% change compared with April 2017.

The means that year to date 4,121 units have now been registered which is a +0.6% change compared with January-April 2017.

AEA Economist Stephen Howarth said, "UK agricultural tractor registrations returned to year-on-year growth in April. During the month, 1,189 machines were registered, just over 100 (11%) more than in April 2017.

"This followed two months of annual declines and meant that the total for the year to date moved back ahead of the same period last year."

The show takes place each day between 9am and 5pm, with entry costing £10 for adults or free if you're a member of the Arboricultural Association.

The company says the new machine features TW 280 performance with the ability to move the tracks in and out, raise the height of the machine off the ground and alter the angle, making tackling difficult ground conditions easy.

The Wolftrack® variable tracking system features heavy-duty twin arms supporting each track, with dynamic control over track width, ground clearance and machine tilt angle, giving users greater control and comfort, particularly whilst navigating uneven and sloping ground up to 35 degrees.

Timberwolf also say the extra-wide feed funnel and open top section combine to provide users with better visibility and ease of feeding, whilst the 280mm by 210mm in-feed aperture can process over 6.5 tonnes per hour. There’s also the company's auto-feed control for smooth operation, combined with a heavier rotor giving added inertia to get the job done quicker.

The new chipper also has a low vibration and ergonomically designed ride-on platform for comfort and safety. There are also additional safety controls, such as reverse feed rollers overriding the stop bar or the carefully positioned air filter intakes to draw in cool, dust-free air.

Husqvarna Automower has been awarded 'Best in Test' and 'Best Premium Choice' by testing site Price Runner UK in a robotic lawnmower comparison test.

Husqvarna Automower 315 received the Best in Test accolade in this year’s assessment. It was praised by an independent panel of testers for its excellent terrain-handling abilities along with its ease of use, intelligent design, low noise level, reliability and its excellent app function.

The feedback received stated the 315 as "a very good purchase for anyone who wants a reliable and easy to manage robotic lawn mower."

Automower 430X, which was also awarded Best Premium Choice, was complimented on its many strengths - "excellent terrain-handling abilities, a phenomenal problem-solving capacity and lots of intelligent functions".

Testers commended the robotic lawn mower, stating "it's very easy to install as a result of clear markings and a straightforward connection method. It has no problems with cutting the stated maximum surface area. It doesn't even need to go out cutting often to achieve an excellent result. And it always finds its way home."

The website says all robotic lawn mowers were tested over a period of several months on several types of lawns and in different weather to ensure test results were as reliable as possible. The assessment focused on the following characteristics - performance, effectiveness, reliability, ease of use, design, construction quality, functionality and safety.

On the company's achievements, Husqvarna UK Sales and Marketing Director Ken Brewster said, “For Husqvarna Automower to be recognised for its outstanding abilities three years running is fantastic. The feedback received from the test was great to hear. It highlights our commitment to the continued development of Husqvarna Automower and robotic lawn mower technology to make it much more time efficient and easier for customers to maintain their lawns.”

FAROL SEAL SOUTH STAFFS DEAL
Council's grounds maintenance operations coming in-house

South Staffordshire Council has recently purchased four new John Deere 1570 outfront mowers equipped with 1.57m rotary decks from Midlands dealer Farol.

South Staffordshire Council is aiming to save £100,000 in the first year of its grounds maintenance operations coming in-house, following many years of it being outsourced.

To carry out its grass cutting work, the Council has recently purchased four new John Deere 1570 outfront mowers equipped with 1.57m rotary decks from Midlands dealer Farol. This followed a proposal to Council Members and a successful visit to IOG SALTEX at the NEC in November 2017 to research the purchase options.

L-R: Chris Roe of Farol, Andrew Aston, Bob Taylor, operators Tony Boden and David Elsmore with the new John Deere mowers at South Staffordshire Council’s headquarters in Codsall near Wolverhampton

The road homologated mowers are equipped with special road lighting kits supplied by Howard Marshall Engineering and are backed by a full PowerGard maintenance package to help fix the costs of ownership. The Council also bought two John Deere front-mounted snow blades to extend the use of the machines through the winter.

South Staffordshire Council’s Street Scene team, part of Community Services, is responsible for cutting 1.1 million square metres of grass every two weeks across the district, which equates to 14 cuts a year from March until September/October.

“Geographically we cover a large rural area, 27 miles from Acton Trussell in the north to Kinver in the south,” says the Council’s Contract Monitoring Officer Andrew Aston. “We maintain open spaces and highway verges, including shrubs, trees and general landscaping as well as grass cutting, and we currently have one Green Flag site, Wom Brook Walk at Wombourne.

“Historically the Council had contracted out its grounds maintenance operations. However, in summer 2017 a number of proposals were presented to elected members regarding the future provision of grounds maintenance and based on all the options, the members opted to bring the service back in-house.

“The overall aim of doing this is to merge grounds maintenance with the Council’s current in-house street cleansing service - the rationale being to create a single, multi-functional Street Scene team that generates both efficiencies and an improved service to residents.

“By adopting this new approach, the Council is not proposing to reduce the frequency of our grass cutting operations,” adds Andrew. “We are able to do this by controlling costs and prioritising our workload, and we feel that taking this approach gives us the most cost-effective way of continuing to provide the best possible service to South Staffordshire residents.”

Following the decision, the team visited IOG SALTEX specifically to research the market and explore the available purchase options. “We looked around the show and talked to the different manufacturers so that the Council could make an informed decision on the equipment we planned to purchase,” says Street Scene Team Leader Bob Taylor. “Because we were going to the exhibition seriously looking to buy new equipment, it really made the whole experience that much more enjoyable and rewarding.

“We met Farol’s golf & turf area sales manager Chris Roe there and saw the 1570 mower on the John Deere stand. Several of our operators have had experience of using the company’s front rotaries, so while we did look at other makes we decided in the end to go with Deere and Farol. This decision was also based on a combination of other factors, not least the PowerGard maintenance package, which we felt was really the best available.”

South Staffordshire Council has utilised RouteSmart route optimisation software since 2012, primarily for its waste and recycling service, which led to the development and mobilisation of an award-winning resource generating major contract and service efficiencies. This system is now also being used for the Street Scene operations.

“RouteSmart gives you daily areas to cover based on the data inputted, such as roads and speed limits, mower speeds and capacities, and it provides the operators with the quickest work routes,” says Andrew Aston. “This new in-house approach and the adoption of new technology give us a great opportunity to improve and provide a more bespoke service.

“We also find social media can be very helpful in this respect - we can update our residents quickly and easily on where and when we’ll be cutting, so it’s much better now that everything’s in our own hands.”

WEATHER WATCH
Set fair for the Bank Holiday weekend - at last

Sunny!

After a topsy-turvey month, could the weather be settling down -and why it's likely to be Grim Down South in the future

GET SET, SUMMER’S HERE?
After a topsy-turvy start to the gardening season featuring record highs nudging 30C in mid-April to the sight of fast bowlers wearing woolly hats as the temperature for the final day of the current round of county matches last Monday, barely rose above 5C, we look set fair for a significant improvement from today and through the May Bank Holiday weekend. Friday will feature some light rain and drizzle in the northwest, but after a cloudy start for many, sunshine will develop, and it will be warm away from coasts.
Saturday through to Monday, cloudy starts will give way to warm sunny spells for many. It will become very warm (25C) for some, however along the coast it will be cooler, perhaps with sea fog.
With the jet stream having moved north, the forecast is for the warm, dry and settled weather to continue for much of the week ahead.

IT’S GRIM DOWN SOUTH
Meteorologists believe summers will be drier in Scotland and northern England than in the south by the end of the century.
Long-term projections from the Met Office show rainfall reducing in some parts of the north by up to 50 per cent, but it could be more extreme with greater risk of flash flooding
But the modelling predicts whatever rainfall remains in the north will be more extreme than current weather, bringing greater risks of flash flooding.
The south on the other hand is set for increased summer showers, which will also grow more intense.
Expected changes are being attributed to global warming and the calculations are based on the premise that increasing levels of greenhouse levels will continue being emitted.
Much of northern Britain is likely to see wetter winters if the climate change goes unchecked.
Heavy storms are projected to become more frequent by the end of the 21st century, the study found.

THIS WEEK IN HISTORY
2 MAY 1740; This morning fell a great deal of snow, which has formed due to a hard frost’ so reported Edinburgh’s Caledonia Mercury. That winter became the yardstick for severity unequalled until 1963

3 MAY 1986: Across, Scotland, Cumbria and North Wales, the fear was that It’s raining strontium-90 and other possible radio-active fallout as a result of the Chernobyl power plant explosion the previous week. As a precaution, restrictions on the movement of sheep on more than 9000 farms are imposed.

7 MAY 2000: Known as the Bracknell Storm, 65mm of rain fell in one hour and hailstones measuring 1.5cm were measured. The 1961-90 average for the entire month is only 56 mm and this comes after the wettest April on record when Bracknell had over 3 times its normal rainfall amount.

NEW HUSQVARNA P524 EFI
Improving efficiency whilst letting your customers cut more!

P524 EFI

Husqvarna has acted on end user and dealer demand and added improved efficiency and productivity to the already proven P 524 commercial front mower.

Commercial customers are increasingly looking for solutions that offer higher productivity and lower operating costs with the added benefits of excellent manoeuvrability. Husqvarna has acted on end user and dealer demand and added improved efficiency and productivity to the already proven P 524 commercial front mower. The NEW Petrol powered P 524 EFi is part of the Husqvarna commercial P 500 series which also includes the diesel powered P 520D and range topping P 525D. All 3 models are designed to offer your customers increased efficiency in complex areas through superior manoeuvrability, excellent accessibility and control with the front mounted cutting decks and all-terrain performance with their AWD transmissions.

The P 524 EFi is designed for a range of applications including commercial and high-end domestic use. The compact platform and high efficiency V-Twin petrol engine make the machine capable of handling larger open spaces through to tight and complex areas that demand high manoeuvrability.

The new model is an upgrade on the P 524 and includes an advanced Kawasaki FX Twin Electronic Fuel injection (EFi) engine that increases the productivity of this model whilst also providing lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions. The machine has exceptional handling and accessibility reducing the need for follow up work with a trimmer or pedestrian mower, ensuring optimum productivity.

There are a number of key benefits to the new P 524EFi model:

  • Increased power and torque – meaning no engine drop, better performance and improved productivity
  • Reduced fuel consumption – meaning lower operating costs
  • Reduced emissions – meaning improved working conditions and the ability to work in emissions sensitive areas.

Husqvarna tested the new P 524EFi against the standard P 524 in tough cutting conditions. The engine on P 524EFi did not stall or droop and in the same time frame, the P 524 EFi cut more than twice the area compared to P 524. The P 524 EFi has an automotive style fuel injection system that controls the engine revolution, resulting in less drop in engine speed when exposing the engine for load. This means the blade speed is maintained and the operator is able to keep a high ground speed instead of slowing down, resulting in improved performance and productivity.

The NEW P 524 EFi commercial front mower will be available from late May.

The Husqvarna Professional field team are available to offer the Authorised Husqvarna dealer network additional support with product demonstrations on the P 500 commercial front mower range as well as the rest of the Husqvarna commercial range. For further information on demonstration support and training please contact your Husqvarna Area Business Manager.

A sparkling gem in the Grizzly crown, the petrol lawn mower trike is unrivalled in both design and quality. Domestic gardeners rejoice, the BRM 51-150 BSAT and BRM 56-161 BSAT three-wheel concept means no more tipping to turn.

No tilt required, this unique model of petrol mower is manoeuvred simply with minimal effort thanks to a lockable swivel front wheel; available in two cutting widths at 51 and 56cm, with 625 and 750 series engines respectively. Artfully engineered by Briggs and Stratton, it’s driven by a powerful four-stroke engine and the trike style design allows for the ultimate in fixed or freely adjusted movement.
