SWITCHING THE PUBLIC ON TO BATTERY
Profile and sales in the ascendancy
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs

Steve Gibbs

At an event aimed at the gardening press this week, machinery had a greatly increased presence - with battery power clearly to the fore.

Whilst conditions outside today are hardly conducive to inspiring customers to leave their house to buy a lawnmower, I attended an event this week which was looking forward to the start of the selling season.

The Garden Press Event, which was held for the first time at the Business Design Centre in Islington on Wednesday, is a boutique exhibition which allows companies to show off their latest offerings, exclusively to members of the gardening press.

I have attended the day for the past few years now and there has traditionally been around just 3 or 4 machinery exhibitors. The majority of the show is comprised of plant bulbs, seeds, gardening gloves and the like. However, on Wednesday there was a noticeably much increased presence of exhibitors relevant to our sector.

From memory, there was STIHL, John Deere, Ego, Cobra, Honda, Robomow, Stiga, Bosch, Makita, Cub Cadet, Webb, GreenWorks, and Gardena. Apologies to anyone I missed out (and indeed to anyone I failed to get around to speaking to - it was a busy day!).

It does raise the question though, why the significant increase in machinery exhibitors at this particular event this year?

It's difficult to say, but a common element which linked many of these exhibitors was battery power. There's no doubt that manufacturers are excited about the appeal these machines are finding with customers and are wanting to put the word out there that there's very much more to come.

Battery power's ascendance is clearly a worldwide trend. I saw some news from the American Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) this week which said their Market Statistics Forecast Advisory Subcommittee had met recently to review 2017 data and consider updated industry and economic forecasts for 2018 and 2019.

They concluded that the outdoor power equipment industry growth in 2017 in the United States was largely driven by battery/electric-powered products as well as commercial mowing equipment (this being underpinned by steady growth in the U.S. housing market and the overall strength of the U.S. economy currently). Industry projections for 2018 and 2019 continue to be positive, they said, based on signs of continued overall economic expansion.

Battery powered machines were certainly to the fore on many manufacturer's stands in Islington this week. And the significance of their display at this particular show, which attracts many members of the mainstream consumer press, rather than just trade journals, shows how keen the industry is to let the public know that these machines are the future.

We'll include some increased detail on some of the cordless developments shown in the May/June issue of Service Dealer magazine, but of particular interest were STIHL's first orange liveried cordless lawnmowers. The phasing out of the Viking brand is underway with the five models they were promoting - two of which are part of their Compact Cordless range with the other three models suitable for larger gardens.

Also gaining attention was Ego's first dedicated range of commercial cordless garden tools which comprised a hedge trimmer, a commercial line trimmer, and a blower.

Talking to exhibitors, they clearly believe that battery products are more important than ever. Crucially they also believe that a real corner has been turned with their acceptance.

Domestic users accept them. Commercial users are increasingly utilising them. And importantly, dealers are embracing the new opportunities which they afford.

NEW RANGE OF ROBOT MOWERS COMING TO UK
Including a 'drop & go' model which requires no installation

LR: Paolo Burali (Zucchetti) with John Hall (Magic Distribution)

Magic Distribution, (a trade division of Mower Magic Ltd) has secured an exclusive UK Distribution Agreement with Italian manufacturer Zucchetti Centro Sistemispa for the Ambrogio Robot mowers.

Magic Distribution, (a trade division of Mower Magic Ltd) the specialist robotic mower distributor in the UK, has secured an exclusive UK Distribution Agreement with Italian manufacturer Zucchetti Centro Sistemispa.

LR: Paolo Burali (Zucchetti) with John Hall (Magic Distribution)

Having specialised in the field of robotic mowers in the UK for over 10 years, Magic Distribution already distribute the Robomow range of products, and has become a well-known supplier of robotic mowers, supplying both the specialist trade and national retailers. The company says the new partnership allows Magic Distribution to add a second range of robotic mowers to its existing line-up, offering more choice to consumers and dealers alike.

Zucchetti manufacture robotic mowers under the Brand 'Ambrogio Robot'. Magic Distribution say Ambrogio is a well-known technology leader in robot mowers across Europe for over 18 years, with what they descibe as 'a unique wide range' of robotic models.

Interestingly, the range now includes a ‘Drop & Mow’ model that requires no installation and utilises a range of sensors to recognise where a lawn ends. The range also features a model for extremely large lawns of up to 7000sqm and steep slope models for up to 55% gradients. Ambrogio has sold over 220,000 Ambrogio robots across Europe to-date.

John Hall, Managing Director at Magic Distribution said, “Ambrogio Robot is truly at the cutting edge of autonomous technology and innovation, with very high build quality standards. This exciting new range complements our existing Robomow line up and fills many gaps in the rapidly growing Robotic Mower category. Securing exclusive distribution rights will allow us to grow closer ties with existing partners and engage with new customers with wider solutions not previously available in the UK Market.

"We remain committed to Robomow and believe, with the recent growth in the UK market, that there is plenty of room for an additional range of robotic mowers that offer something different to both dealers and consumers.

"Ambrogio has a strong focus on being European built; with every mower manufactured in Italy, 98% of the components being European manufactured, and a large percentage are Italian with German motors. Zucchetti even manufacture their own PCB`s (circuit boards) in a state-of-the-art facility, and use x-ray as part of the quality controls. Each robot is extensively tested by a technician off the assembly line to ensure everything works perfectly on arrival at its new home.”

584 units were registered in February 2018 which represents a -5.8% change compared with February 2017.

Year to date figures are standing at 1,282 units which equates to a +2.2% change compared with January-February 2017.

Stephen Howarth, Agricultural Economist at the AEA said, "At 584 units, the number registered was nearly 6% down year on year and represented the lowest monthly total since December 2016.

"Nevertheless, the monthly total was still higher than in February 2016, following good growth this time last year. The number of tractors registered in the first two months of the year remained 2% higher than a year before."

SCAMBLERS TAKE ON ETESIA
Completes their groundcare portfolio

Scamblers have taken on Etesia

Scamblers, based in Bourn, Cambridgeshire will now supply the full range of Etesia grounds care equipment with immediate effect.

Scamblers, based in Bourn, Cambridgeshire, believe they now have a complete portfolio of groundscare machinery after they were confirmed as Etesia UK’s newest dealer.

First established in 1974, the family owned business specialise in supplying compact tractors, bank tractors, mowers, utility vehicles and groundscare machinery for every aspect of turf and grounds maintenance. However, Ed Scambler, company director, admitted that he was keen to strengthen the portfolio of products and this led him to Etesia.

“Etesia is a brand that I have been wanting to sell for around twenty years now,” he says. “However, due to prior agreements we had in place we were not really able to do that. I had been looking to complete a whole portfolio of good quality commercial and domestic equipment and I think that with the addition of Etesia, we have finally completed that portfolio.”

With immediate effect, Scamblers will now supply the full range of Etesia grounds care equipment.

“Until very recently, previous agreements have dictated what we sell but now we are in a position to sell what we think is best for the customer. We have been able to go out and hand pick the products that we want and I am confident that with Etesia on-board, it now means we have the most comprehensive range of equipment.”

They were also given the opportunity to operate the new <750kg WS16-35D Wood Series Chipper with cutting disc technology.

"From the feedback I have received they were clearly blown away with not just what type of material could be handled, but also with the consistency and quality of the green waste and chips produced.”

TYRE-LINE & ITP INTRODUCE THE MUD LITE II
Relentless Performance

ITP Mud Lite II

Tyre-Line, UK distributor for ITP Tyres, Wheels & Accessories are proud to announce the imminent arrival of The Next Generation of Multi-Terrain Tyre built for modern ATV, UTV and SxS vehicles – The ITP Mud Lite II.

Tyre-Line, UK distributor for ITP Tyres, Wheels & Accessories are proud to announce the imminent arrival of The Next Generation of Multi-Terrain Tyre built for modern ATV, UTV and SxS vehicles – The ITP Mud Lite II

The New Mud Lite II features an all-new tyre carcass, profile, tread compound and pattern, combined with high inflation pressure / high load capacity and European road legal “E” marking.

“The original Mud Lite tyre, one of the most popular tyres in ITP’s pattern line-up, was designed for ATVs prior to the introduction of utility and side-by-side vehicles,” stated Jacqui Jones, Tyre-Line Aftermarket Manager. “The new Mud Lite II offers the same proven performance as the original, but has been optimized in both profile and design for use with modern UTV & SXS vehicles.

New from the ground up, the multi-purpose Mud Lite II’s new tread design mixes specially designed lug patterns in strategic locations on the carcass to create sure-footed traction in the mud as well as stability and comfort on loose and hard surfaces. To provide a smooth ride, ITP engineers designed Mud Lite II tyres with a variable open-lug tread design to enhance traction over a variety of surfaces.

To minimize tyre flex, increase support and reduce wear, the Mud Lite II tyre has unique “tendons” that connect and stretch between the tyre’s lugs. The centreline dimpled, v-shaped lugs enhance traction, while the lug height and positioning makes for an incredibly smooth ride on hard packed surfaces. The new multi-terrain Mud Lite II carries a robust 6-ply rating and the lug height varies from 3⁄4-inch to 1 1/8- inch, depending on the tyre size. The tyre’s shoulder also features an enhanced tread treatment for added sidewall protection and grip.

New ITP Mud Lite II: Relentless Performance for ATV, UTV & SXS

Dimpled centre lugs and a re-engineered pattern provide massive forward traction in loose surfaces, especially mud. This tread design improves bite and enhances the tyre’s self- cleaning capabilities. The tyre’s shoulder features an innovative mud breaker tread design to channel debris and reduce the dreaded horsepower-robbing suction drag in muddy terrain.

Produced in a range of popular sizes including 25x8-12, 25x10-12, 26x9-12, 26x11- 12, 27x9-14 and 27x11-14, the Mud Lite II covers the majority of today’s most popular vehicle fitments.
