DEALER OF THE YEAR NOMINEES ANNOUNCED
Longlist unveiled today
by Service Dealer Editor, Steve Gibbs

Steve Gibbs

Find out which dealerships are in the running for one of our prestigious Dealer Of The Year titles, to be presented at the Oxford Belfry Hotel on November 16th.

November is almost upon us, bringing with it once again a couple of very important dates for dealers' diaries.

First up is the IOG's Saltex show at the NEC on the 1st and 2nd. In the latest issue of Service Dealer magazine, which has hit the presses this week, we have a preview of the event which has well established itself now as an indoors show.

There will be plenty of new machinery on show making a trip to Birmingham well worth the time of specialist dealers. And if you are planning on attending, do come over and say hi to the Service Dealer team who'll be on Stand M030.

Not only will be great to meet as many of our readers as possible at Saltex, there is another opportunity to do just that coming up shortly after the exhibition with the Service Dealer Conference & Awards taking place on Thursday November 16th. The venue is once again the Oxford Belfrey Hotel and the Conference title this year is ‘The Challenge of Change: Embracing & Adapting to a Changing Market.’

The day's talks, breakouts, and interactive sessions will all aim to strike a hopeful and positive tone. There's been too much doom and gloom lately. The conference intends for dealers to experience a day full of great insight, packed full of valuable nuggets that they can take back to their dealerships and put to practical use.

Some dealers will of course be taking home something else from the day as well - a Dealer Of The Year title! And it's our pleasure today to unveil the longlist of dealers nominated across the core categories of Garden, Professional Turfcare, Farm Machinery, Forestry Equipment, and ATV/Quad.

Like last year the nominations for the dealerships in the running for an award, have come from both suppliers putting their most valued dealers forward, as well as dealers entering their own businesses.

The assessment process has principally been achieved via feedback from the most important people to a dealer's business - their customers.

An expert panel now has the unenviable task of assessing all the feedback which has been received in from customers up and down the UK. As well as the masses of customer comments, the judging panel will also consider the feedback from manufacturers and suppliers, taking into consideration any awards they may have bestowed on their dealers during this past year.

How dealers present themselves to their customers will also be taken very seriously, with websites and social media presences considered. Testimonials from customers from sources such as Google Reviews and Yelp, as well as those included on dealers’ own sites, will also be taken into consideration.

The nominated dealers listed below will be whittled down to a shortlist of three finalists per-category and then the winner announced 'Oscars-style' on the evening of the Awards ceremony on November 16th

Also being announced on the night will be awards for individual dealership team members - The Star of the Dealership and The Apprentice of the Year. Service Dealer will also be presenting a Lifetime Achievement Award.

So without further ado, many congratulations and good luck to the all the nominated dealers who are listed below purely alphabetically, across all categories -

SCOTTISH APPRENTICESHIP SCHEME LAUNCHED
From New Holland

Agricultural apprentice
New Holland Agriculture has joined forces with Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) Oatridge campus to train the land-based engineers of the future.

New Holland Agriculture has joined forces with Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) Oatridge campus to train the land-based engineers of the future.

In a move which the company describes as intended to strengthen the future of the agricultural industry, New Holland has announced a new four-year agricultural engineering qualification for Scottish school leavers.

The scheme hopes to encourage anyone with an interest in land-based machinery to consider a career in land-based engineering. The qualification balances theory with practical tasks including servicing and maintenance on a wide range of equipment.

Mark Barnes, technical support manager for New Holland, has a long history in technical support and training and support in the land based sector, and will be working closely with SRUC to run the apprenticeship scheme, supporting the college with technical training and equipment.

Mr Barnes says: “There is a general lack of people coming into the agricultural machinery industry. We need to ensure that our dealerships are equipped for the future. The best way to do that is to invest in young people and offer them viable routes into the industry.”

The programme focuses heavily on practical work-place learning, balancing classroom studies with block release. The time spent in a practical work environment gradually increases as the course progresses.

Applicants can begin their apprenticeship by studying for a year to attain the National Certificate in Land-based Engineering, and then undertake a further two years study to gain their SVQ level 2 once employment within the agricultural industry has been secured. If a dealership is willing to employ an applicant without a National Certificate they can proceed straight to the SVQ.

Mr Barnes says: “The career path for those undertaking this qualification is diverse and future proof. Many people do not realise that land-based engineering is one of the most high-tech sectors in the world.

"There is the potential to progress from an apprentice to the New Holland certification programme and, through further training and experience, on to become one of New Holland’s Master Technicians. There is a misconception that technicians are low paid and that their working conditions are not ideal, but that is not the case. The pay is competitive and the much of their time is spent in the countryside.”

The new four-year qualification offered at SRUC is City and Guilds approved and will mirror its well-established English counterpart, which New Holland has been running successfully for more than 15 years at Reaseheath College in Cheshire.

Those wishing to find out more about the apprenticeship scheme should approach their local New Holland dealership.

HUSQVARNA LAUNCH FIRST GEN COMMERCIAL ROBOTS
Mowers developed specially for green space managers

Husqvarna Automower 550
Last week's Silent City 3 Conference which took place in Edinburgh, saw Husqvarna launch robot mowers which step into the commerical mowing field.
Last week's Silent City 3 Conference which took place in Edinburgh, saw Husqvarna launch robot mowers which step into the commerical mowing field.

Two robotic mowers developed specially for green space managers and landscaping companies were introduced to the delegates which included dealers, commercial mowing representatives and press. The company says the new machines aim to improve lawn quality and sustainability, while reducing costs and freeing up time.

Automower 550

The company says the Husqvarna Automower 500-series take all the benefits of Husqvarna robotic lawnmowers, and add more features specially catered for professional fleet use. These machines can tackle lawns of up to 5000m2, steep slopes of up to 45%, and an area capacity of up to 208 m2 an hour.

An ultra-silent drive in the robotic mower means a noise level of just 58 dB(A), so the 500-series can cut silently both during the day and at night.

Fleet Services

Standard on the new 500-series is Husqvarna Fleet Services, the company's cloud-based solution, which gives operators a complete overview of all robotic lawnmowers in the fleet, as well as full remote control from one unified system. An unlimited number of robotic mowers can be added to the fleet, and be controlled by a single operator.

“Our objective is to allow landscaping teams to work smarter. With the management system, one person can manage all the mowers in their fleet at one time, and still have time for other tasks,” said Olle Markusson, Director of Product Management - Robotics, Husqvarna.

Through the online portal, operators are able to quickly see the robotic lawnmowers’ status and the geo-positon of their fleet, on either a map or in a list in real-time.

Operators are also able to fully control a variety of mower activities and settings through Husqvarna Fleet Services, including the option to adjust cutting height, making the mower start or stop cutting or return to its charging station, and turn on energy saving mode with an ECO setting.

Husqvarna Fleet Services comes with a service and maintenance portal, so operators are able to plan maintenance at regular intervals, reducing unexpected downtime or unplanned delays. Theft protection and position tracking are also available for security.

The Fleet web portal is available for Technicians and Fleet Managers, while the Fleet mobile app can be used by Team Leads and Operators. All 500-series robotic mowers are equipped with cellular communication, to ensure Husqvarna Fleet Services capabilities are available remotely.

Smart features

The new 500-series has a variety of features to handle complex areas, such as Penta-search, triple guide wires, and automatic passage handling. Penta-search means five search methods to find charging stations, and Triple Guide wires are for maximum flexibility to handle complex areas. Automatic passage handling guides the mower through narrow passages, allowing it to navigate complex areas.

For improved lawn health, GPS-assisted navigation and a weather timer helps ensure uniform coverage of complex lawns, while automatically adapting mowing frequency to lawn growth.

Automower 520
The Automower 520 is optimised for lawns with a capacity of up to 2200m2, and can handle slopes of up to 45%.

It is connectivity enabled in the form of Husqvarna Fleet Services through cellular networks, and also has Bluetooth capabilities. A rubber bumper provides protection, and the terrain wheel kit further improves terrain and slope performance.

It is connectivity enabled in the form of Husqvarna Fleet Services through cellular networks, and also has Bluetooth capabilities. The 550 has a
faster ground speed than the 520 due to remote object detection, since ultrasonic sensors located at the front of the mower can slow down or stop the mower before impact. The charging station includes a stop button, which will automatically summon the robotic mower back to its station.

ANOTHER MONTHLY DIP IN TRACTOR REGISTRATIONS
But year to date still up by 8%

September 2017's tractor registrations are down on September 2016
For the second month in a row, UK agricultural tractor registrations (over 50hp) were below their level in the same month last year.

For the second month in a row, in September UK agricultural tractor registrations (over 50hp) were below their level in the same month last year.

Indeed, the year-on-year decline increased to nearly 15%, according to figures released by the AEA. At 947, the number of units registered was 161 lower than in September 2016.

"However," says Stephen Howarth, Agricultural Economist at the AEA, "it is worth noting that a year ago, many dealers were running end-of-series promotions which meant that registrations were a third higher than the year before in both September and October.

"Therefore, a decline was to be expected and another is possible for the current month."

Registrations for the year to date remain 8% up on the first nine months of last year, at 9,058 units.

These data refer to ‘Agricultural’ tractors of a power exceeding 50hp.

AR 1000

Weighing 5.5kg, the company says the slim ergonomic design allows the weight to be carried closer to the operators back, making it more comfortable during operation, particularly over longer periods. Also, the attachable rain cover means its use is not dictated by weather conditions.

A comfortable harness with a waist and chest strap come as standard and the new design includes a USB port to allow the user to charge devices such as mobile phones.

The battery backpack enables the extended use of STIHL cordless products such as hedge trimmers, blowers & brush cutters.

STIHL say the AR 1000 is suitable for use in conjunction with the new HSA 94 R and T hedge trimmers, affording them a runtime of up to 380 minutes on a single charge. The FSA 130 and 130 R brush cutters can also run for up to 230 minutes, with the BGA 100 blower running for up to 225 minutes.

When used in conjunction with the AL 500 charger, the AR 1000 backpack battery can be charged in two hours.

The new battery backpack also has a six LED charge display status, enabling users to monitor the charge level to know how much operation time is left before needing to re-charge the unit.

The STIHL backpack is available exclusively from more than 700 STIHL Approved Dealerships nationwide. The AR 1000 has a recommended retail price of £630 including VAT.

Over 50 key independent dealer and distributor customers recently attended Kubota UK’s 2017 Engines Conference.

Over 50 key independent dealer and distributor customers recently attended Kubota UK’s 2017 Engines Conference, held at Mercedes Benz World, home of the famous Brooklands racing circuit in Surrey.

The conference, entitled ‘Kubota - The Answer’, gave Kubota UK’s Engines Division the opportunity to share its future vision and the plans that the manufacturer of industrial diesel and dual fuel engines has put in place to surpass Stage V emissions standards, due to come into force in 2019/20.

Delegates learnt more about Kubota Corporation’s commitment to being a global major brand at the conference and gained a deeper understanding of Kubota’s drive to be a great company to do business with through its ‘Customer First’ strategy.

Thirteen countries from around the globe were represented at the event, highlighting the investment and dedication Kubota UK places on its dealer and distributor network and the significant value of its “One -Team” working partnership approach.

Daniel Grant, Kubota UK’s Business Development Manager - Engines, said: “Stage V engine emission regulation is one of the biggest challenges facing the industry. ‘Kubota - The Answer’, our key theme for this year’s conference, was all about communicating Kubota Corporation’s global position on Stage V and how we can support our dealer and distributor customers on a local level."

At the conference, Kubota showcased a host of new Stage V ready engine solutions, including its new 5.0 litre capacity V5009 engine model. The new 09 Series, with mass production starting in 2020, pushes Kubota into the 200hp class for the first time – opening up new markets for the company to target.

Dave Roberts, Managing Director of Kubota UK, commented: “This was a fantastic opportunity to share our strategy and future vision with our key distributor and dealer customers, so on behalf of everyone at Kubota UK, I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone that attended and we look forward to working hand in hand together to achieve continued success.”

William Judge, Manager National Sales, Massey Ferguson UK & Ireland, hands over the keys to a MF 6700 Series to Sean O’Brien

One of Sean's first duties took place at the recent Irish Ploughing Championships where he welcomed his and Massey Ferguson's chosen charity for the year, St Francis Farm, to the show stand.

This is a working farm near Tullow, Co. Carlow, but also a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre offering 14-week, fully supervised, residential programmes. This involves providing a unique blend of individual and group therapy, education and practical skills therapy in a rural farm setting with farming at the core of the rehabilitation.

Sean's family has farmed not far away from the St Francis facility for many years and he says he cannot remember a time when there wasn't at least one Massey Ferguson tractor on the family farm. “Being a beef farm, there was nearly always one on the go,” he recalls.

As MF's Ambassador, he's delighted to be working with St Francis Farm. “They get on with their good work quietly and behind the scenes,” he says. “They're very local to me and they do a very worthwhile job.”

At the Ploughing Championships Sean was also presented with the keys to a  MF 6700 Series. The tractor was supplied by Kehoe Bros of Enniscorthy, through their Tullow depot, with whom the O'Brien family has a long-standing relationship.

Lindsay Haddon, Advertising & Sales Promotion Manager for Massey Ferguson said, “Sean is a great advocate for both agriculture and for Ireland. We are very much looking forward to working with him on some very exciting projects in the future."
